  1. My daughter struggled in Algebra. We tried several different curricula and settled on Teaching Textbooks. The combination of video plus audio and immediate feedback of right or wrong helped. If she got it wrong, she could have the answer explained right then. Still took us 2 years on Algebra 1 (9th and 10th). Went to TT Geometry in 11th and then Algebra 2 in 12th.
  2. I want something educational, but also interesting and engaging. Not a documentary. Has anyone seen Gettysburg?
  3. Is there any advantage to paying for a private school psychologist? Any reason a public school diagnosis would cause a problem down the road? Dd would like to get an Elementary Ed degree and will probably be staying the same county as her school records. She is 17 and has always been homeschooled. Edited: I am looking for some kind of eval that will give her some college accommodations - Maybe a separate room for tests, possibly some help with note taking. And I don't have much $$ so a thousand dollar eval is out of the question. I just don't know where to start or what to do. :(
  4. Some kind of documentation of her sensory processing issues at least.
  5. Dd will be graduating in a year and a half and though I have seen much improvement I think she may need accommodations to get through college. What is the easiest/not expensive way to get help? She had a SPD diagnosis as a small child, but we have never pursued anything since. I am not looking for in depth information because we know most of her issues after homeschooling for so many years - just whatever paperwork will get her the help she needs to get through school.
  6. Yes, we are sure she will be going to our local college. Maybe we will work on PERT review for the summer and see what kind of score she can get on entrance exam and go from there. Thanks!
  7. DD thinks she wants to major in Elementary Education and math requirements can be met with Math for Liberal Arts 1 and 2. I did the Precalculus/Calculus sequence in college so I don't really know what these classes consist of. Also she struggles with math and has finished TT Algebra 1 and is now working on TT Geometry. I'm wondering if she really needs to take Algebra 2. She is a junior this year so only 1 year of math left and I was wondering if we should find a liberal arts math for next year instead if it would be easier. She will also need to pass entrance exam to junior college. Any insights?
  8. My daughter has attended a local co-op and has had Bible for 3 years now. We need the credits and she has done the work, but would it look strange to a secular college? Is there any reason you would not use all three? She is planning on attending a junior college and then a local state college and is probably going to major in Elementary Education or something similar.
  9. She didn't know there was a way to call. Only had an address. I passed info along. Thanks.
  10. Question: Has anyone ever gotten ACT scores back with a section having NO score reported. A friend's daughter just took it in June and her score report only shows a score for Math, English, and Reading. She only has asterisks where her Science score should be and therefore she did not receive a composite score either. She did take the science section of the test. She sent a letter to ACT already, requesting an explanation, but just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if they know why?
  11. I see it's free to students but it looks like you have to have and email address with .edu. If you paid for it what is the best way to do it? We mainly want access to Word this year.
  12. Who was your instructor? We decided to take the plunge and try it for Essay 1 starting next week.
  13. I am on a FB page with many mom's doing the protocol. From what I have read so far some are having success, but others have actually seen regression. I'm glad it worked for the OP and it may work for many, but I would definitely investigate further before starting it since it doesn't seem benign.
  14. Is your main concern with geometry for the ACT? What about working on the geometry portion of ACT practice tests instead of repeating the whole class. I would want to go ahead and start algebra 2. And we had no trig for ACT but I did teach my son SOHCAHTOA before taking it.
  15. My son finished his A.A. degree with dual enrollment during high school. His reasoning was "why would I want to do 2 extra years of school if I don't have to?" :) My daughter will not do any dual enrollment because she has some learning challenges and does not want the stress of college too soon. I actually did "early admission" to college for my senior year back in 1984 which was basically dual enrollment, so the concept has been around for a while.
  16. Good points! She does like psychology in general, though counseling is her main interest. But if ANY degree will open up doors for her maybe I should just let her pursue her interests and not worry so much about usefulness. My son picked a major, got his degree and has worked in his field for 6 years now and plans to stay there. That was so much easier!
  17. She likes helping people, listening to their problems and encouraging them. She really thought she wanted a psychology degree and to go into counseling. We have run into several people who started a psychology degree and switched majors or went back to school for a different degree after finishing it. Consenses seems to be it is not very useful unless you finish a master's or doctorate and I think finishing a bachelor's degree is going to take longer than the typical student. I don't see graduate school in the picture. She doesn't like school but wants to have options. She also really enjoys working with kids. She helps out at 3rd grade Sunday school class and is helping to do tours for kids at the local butterfly house. I am wondering about an elementary education degree. The thing is between her health issues and anxiety she has there is no way she could handle the pressures of working in the public school system. She is not sure she would want to teach in a classroom situation even in a smaller private school. Does anyone know what kind of jobs besides teaching in a classroom that would be available with an elementary education degree? Which degree would be more useful if you weren't going to got the traditional route ( counseling for psychology/classroom teaching for education). Which would open more doors? Or any other degrees/career paths along this route. We have nixed social work. Just looking for any kind of feedback/opinions on what you would do if it were your child. Sorry if this is rambling. It's late and I'm tired. :)
  18. I am just beginning to look into this. The local CC college website said any testing had to be less than 2 years old so I was planning on trying to get something done during junior year.
  19. Thank you. This is what I have been looking for. CC is the only option on the table for her. But I can't find an evaluator that agrees with this, and I feel she would test very poorly so that's not really an option. Maybe I need to look harder for another evaluator.
  20. We have worked with many health practitioners both mainstream and alternative and have found some pieces of the puzzle, but are still searching. Lots of sleep issues. And she is a different child when the sun is out. Definitely some SAD. And some sensory processing issues. She can have some days where everything clicks and she can do quite a bit of work well. But then other days she struggles to get through the basics. That's why I feel it is more of a health issue, rather than a learning issue. She does seem to learn best with both auditory and visual input. I am very concerned about her handling college and a job. But I am trying to make sure I do the right thing for her with high school as well.
  21. Too much stress from word problems in Alg 1, and I was never too good at the word problems myself, so I let her skip over a lot of them. I would like to go back this summer and work on only word problems while she doesn't have all the new Algebra concepts coming at her every day. Any suggestions for a workbook or website that explains word problems well and has a lot of practice?
  22. No umbrella school. Finished(4 1/2) - World History Economics (1/2) She did most of these finished courses through a local co-op Bible (Old Testament) Language Arts 1 Botany (1/2) Apologetics (1/2) Hopefully finishing soon(5 1/2) - Alg 1 (2 credits) (2 years on this) Bio 1 w/lab (still need to do quite a few labs) Govt. (1/2) - 2/3 of the way through Astronomy (1/2) needs to finish watching some videos Language Arts 2 ( we need to add quite a bit to this) Current Events/Geography(1/2) - started at co-op/trying to add stuff to finish at home. She has partial credit toward PE - about 40 hours of karate and some hiking, swing dancing etc. She has partial credit toward Fine/Practical/Performing arts - maybe 50 hours of drama at the co-op We will be having to work through summer to finish up this year. Problem is we usually start the next year at the beginning of the summer and get a big jump because of seasonal affective issues. Winter is a bust for learning. So in order to get the requirements done I have to push hard now and the stress starts to affect her health. And even pushing hard, we aren't going to get that summer push this year. That's why I was wondering if there was a better way. I am going to have to come up with some easy peasy electives. I wanted to get foreign language out of the way at FLVS, but I don't think she can handle the stress right now. I'm tired. Hope this made some sense. Next year so far plan is - Apologia Physical Science w/ lab (she likes this) Power Basics American History (this will be a struggle) TT Geometry ( has to go better than Algebra) Language Arts 3 (?) Psychology (7 sisters - this was her choice) ???
  23. No specific requirements for the credit, but the 24 different credits in general. For example she took twice as long to finish Algebra, which I have figured I can can safely call 2 credits based on what I have heard. But I can't really pull of Geometry 1a and 1b, and Biology 1a and 1b, etc. I have thought about the 5 year high school option, but my daughter already struggling so much with everyone around her advancing and feeling left behind in so many areas in life I would like to graduate her on time. She is already a year older than her peers in her grade due to starting later than most. I believe she needs that if at all possible. Even if it means remedial work to get into college. She goes to church, helps with the kids there during VBS, volunteers a few hours a week at a butterfly house during the summer - nothing much to turn into credits. She tries hard. Her brain just shuts down after a certain period of time and she is done. And very low stamina physically as well. I guess I really just wanted opinions on how important it is to get these credits.
