  1. I'm taking my ds (9yo) to our pediatrician in hopes of obtaining a referral for speech therapy and testing for a learning disability by a specialist--I'm suspecting an auditory processing disorder but obviously want to have him tested. (They're also going to do a complete physical since he hasn't had one in over a year.) I'm not sure how to handle expressing my concerns to the pediatrician in front of my son....I really don't want to talk about his problems in front of him like he's not there but I'm not sure how to, or if I should, include him in the conversation. My ds knows that we're going to discuss his "mis-hearing", misspelling, and mispronunciation of certain sounds and he knows I've been keeping a list of words that he misspells due to incorrectly hearing certain sounds. I've explained that if he was having difficulty seeing we'd take him to the eye Dr., but I don't know how to explain-or if he should even be in the room-when I ask the Dr. about possible testing for a learning disability. Do I talk to the Dr. privately outside the room, call and speak to him after the appt., or figure out a way to appropriately explain this to my son. I was planning on taking my other 3 kids--is this a mistake? He is definitely aware that there are some issues since my 6yo is approaching him in the level of difficulty of their work--she's pretty advanced which doesn't make him feel any better....I don't want to wound his little ego more than it already has been. To make matters MUCH worse this is all very new to me since this is our first year hs'ing. I'd really appreciate any advice.
  2. We've followed the same schedule, but have found Saxon 2 too slow for even my 6 y.o. (She's a bit ahead of schedule in everything though.) We're using 3 for our 9 y.o. and it's also too slow for him. I've loved Saxon so far for K-3, but my daughter was using 7/6 and hated it. From my experience (which isn't very much) the format changes quite a bit after 3, which I didn't realize until after I bought 5/4.
  3. I too bought both and haven't touched the text since I read through it after I received it. We followed the workbook exactly, up until Christmas, and have since been writing letters to family as our copywork. It really does depend on what you're looking for--the workbook truly is pick up and go, but it's also consumable. I found the text to be a little more confusing to follow than the workbook....but then again, I'm easily confused. :tongue_smilie:
  4. we just switched out daughter from saxon 7/6 to teaching textbooks 7. she absolutely loves it....we printed an online placement form to help us decide where to put her and we intend on switching over our son as soon as he finishes up saxon 3. (disclaimer--i am a 1st year hs mom and really have no idea what i'm doing :001_smile:)
  5. My first post....I figured this is a safe topic. NW Indiana here too!
