  1. My parents were married for 36 when my mom died.  My dad remarried, divorced, remarried, divorced, remarried, then died.  I was an adult during all that, but divorce was hard on me even in my 20's and 30's.  My dh's parents were married over 50 years and both died 6 months apart.  I didn't vote.

  2. The closet is pretty big but then again not as big as some of those you see on HGTV.  I think it is a really ridiculous design because there was all this wasted space in the middle of it, but just a hanging bar and a shelf going around the periphery.  It is rather square shaped.  We are changing it and putting the sink in a different spot (sink is in the also ridiculously shaped and too big dressing area) and making the closet a long narrow one so there is no wasted space in the middle.  I don't know if that makes sense.  We have a Container Store near us so we plan to go in and work with them directly.  I am glad to hear elfa gets good reviews.  I can't justify the expense of California closet stuff.  Seems over the top and status symbol-ish instead of truly practical.  Around here though (Northern VA) everybody is always thinking in terms of resale value and I guess that affects our thinking too.  But I still think going with elfa will be what we wind up doing.

Why do you have a sink in your closet?  Is your bathroom in there too?  I wonder if the space in the middle can be used for adding an island of drawers or a sitting area where you put your shoes and socks on.

We have a long closet but kind of a his and hers side.  We made a mistake of splitting the "his" side with top and bottom rods to fit shirts, and then the "hers" side only has a tall rod to hang long things.  So what has happened now is "he" has all of his shirts on his side, and "she" has all of her blouses, shirts, dresses, pants, etc. plus "his" pants too.  I now want only my clothes on my side!  So however you do it, make sure you design an exclusive his side and her side.  It makes getting dressed easier if you only have to go to your area of the closet.  When we added an addition to our house, we changed the location of our closet.  We didn't know what we wanted so the contractor did his own design. We thought it was wonderful until after several years of using it.  I think we'll eventually change it to an Elfa system.

  3. Thanks for the encouragement with this thread!  I've got to find a way to make myself go walking in the morning.  My dh will walk with me in the evening, but for some reason we most often find an excuse not to go.  You listed some great benefits (reasons) to make walking a priority.  Thanks!

  4. I recently found out that my great grandmother had 4 children and maybe some miscarriages by the time she was 29 in 1890.  After that she wasn't on any census.  We discovered she was put in a mental hospital. We suspect it was postpartum  depression.  She lived into her 80's.  So sad.  What medication could have done to help her.

  5. My parents actually replaced a deck right off the kitchen with a patio off the basement.  They set up a table near the basement door, inside, to facilitate cooking.  It didn't turn out to be that big a deal, since people were eating down there anyway for the most part.

I grew up in a rambler with a full daylight basement.  From the backyard, the kitchen was on the 2nd floor with no deck.  To get to the patio, you had to walk down a full set of stairs from the kitchen to the basement, across the room to the sliding glass door to the patio where the BBQ was.  It worked for the 13 years we lived there because we didn't have another option.  Now I'm in a house were to get from the kitchen to the BBQ on a deck I have to walk through the living room and the family room to the sliding glass door.  It works but I sure wish it was much closer to the kitchen.  Our deck is level with the house, but at one point we thought about building a smaller deck and putting in a patio to put the BBQ on.  That would have added 4 more steps down from the deck to the patio.  I think about how many times I have to go back and forth from the kitchen to get supplies for grilling or to set up the eating place if we want to eat outside.  I so wish it was much easier for the person doing the cooking and preparing for people to eat outside.

  6. If you BBQ, it would be more convenient to have the BBQ on the deck closest to the kitchen.  If you were only going to have a landing outside of the kitchen and then a lot (how many?) stairs down to the patio, I don't think it would be used very much.  Now, if your issue is privacy, and you feel too exposed on the deck and you would feel more private on ground level, somehow incorporate both an area for a BBQ and some seating and also some area on the patio below.

  7. I'm sure I got this idea from this board.  I always give a check in the amount of the year they graduate.  This year it is $20.16.  This has been a unique gift (though I know others do it too) and it has the added benefit that if I don't get a thank you note, I know they received it when the check is cashed.

  8. I'd somehow use red and black as the color theme, maybe even checks to be like the chess set.  Maybe something that says, "My next move . . . University of Texas at Dallas."  Don't know their school colors, but if it's red and black that would be tie it in nicely!  I agree with putting a laptop out with it running a slide show of pictures.  I love looking at what a kid looked like as a baby and how he matures into the graduate, especially if I didn't know him when he was younger.  I've seen slides shows of graduates who show what they have accomplished on the computer, like a game they developed or computer graphics work.  Love the idea of displaying some of his origami work.  That is very unique!

  9. I used to go walking with a couple of friends at 5:30-6:30 a.m.  I guess that was my mommy break.  Dh was home before leaving for work in case the toddlers woke up early.  Usually one was awake by the time I got home.

  10. I've got about 12 colors, but my favorite is the lapis, sunflower, and peacock.  If I want a blue table, I mix cobalt, peacock, lapis and turquoise.  If I need more placesettings, the yellows (sunflower and marigold) mix well with the blues.

This is the first I heard a new color (claret) is coming.  Are they retiring a color?
