  1. I would study ancient Greek and translate ancient texts to modern english. I have always loved languages but my parents didn't think I could get a job with a degree in the classics. I don't have a job now, so I guess it didn't really matter, ha!
  2. My kids are in the same grade but one tested a semester beyond the other. So I bought the series with all of the supplements, had all the spines cut off and hole punched the books. I put the pages we are going to go over into sheet protectors and I let them use water based markers to write on them. When ds is done with his pages I put them back into the binder to save for my dd. My dd really likes it because she just wipes away her mistakes and start over. I even put plain white paper into a sheet protector for scratch work. I know you said your children are on the same level, but it could help if they don't work at the same pace.
  3. We have been using Zaner Bloser for a few months now and we really like it. I looked at Handwriting with out Tears and I didn't like the look of the cursive. The ZB program assumes you don't know any cursive so it starts with loops and curves, goes into single letters, then joining letters. Hope that helps :)
  4. Do you read the web comic "The Oatmeal"? He does some grammar comics that are hilarious and address these issues. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/who_vs_whom
  5. My kids would be zombies in front of the tv or Minecraft game if I let them. This is our first year homeschooling and it was getting out of hand. They wanted screen time every spare moment. So I told them they could have a half and hour a day no matter what. They could also earn 15 minutes of electronics time every time we get through an hour of schoolwork. So far it seems to be working well.
  6. It's been two weeks since we started hs, so I asked my children what they thought of it. My ds said he thought it would be harder. I guess I need to do some tweaking!

  7. :iagree: with Kai. I was confused about that too! Also, I'm pretty sure the Arduino class would be just as beneficial as a Lego Mindstorm club. I would keep that class. Arduino is used in "real world" engineering.
  8. We went to the local public school for our first Engineering Club meeting. It was an hour of chaos under fluorescent lighting. I don't think that activity will continue...
  9. Just saw a mouse run out from under my stove. Eek!

Thank you for the reminder, time to set up traps. It's that time a year again.

  10. We had our first day of HS Coop today. The kids had a great time!

  11. I love Good Eats!! I love the informative skits he does. When he dressed up as Waffle Man... sigh. I'm geeking out over here
  12. I finally committed to a spelling program. I over think things way too much!

  13. This looks so cool! I'm going to try these out on my kids. Thanks for the review :)
  14. My local library is creating a section for homeschoolers in their children's library. The library is going to place an order for books and asked for input from some of their homeschool patrons. Their only request is that the books not have worksheets that can be pulled out. When they asked me for suggestions I was speechless because I have a huge wish list and because I'm afraid to suggest books that I haven't looked at myself. I suggested TWTM, SOTW, Hakim's History of US, Beast Academy, Life of Fred, Sir Cumference series, and MCT. What would your wish list look like?
  15. The Children's Librarian at my local library just asked me for suggestions for a homeschool book section they want to create. For a moment my mouth just hung open like a fish.... there was a traffic jam in my brain!

THat is awesome! Ours doesnt have a dedicated section but it does have tons of resources. I currently have SOTW on audio disc checked out.

Our local library had a binder that could be checked out which was like homeschooling 101 and had specific info explaining the laws, complete with sample withdrawal and letters of intent. It was incredibly helpful to a newbie!

I'm not sure what they ended up ordering but I'm hopeful they ordered some of the books on my wishlist ;) As a newbie the thought of choosing and then buying curriculum that we might not like is very stressful!

  16. Thanks Debbie! We just came home from vacation so projected start date is next week. Going from theoretical to actual is a big step!
  17. This is good to know. I'm just starting out in Missouri too :)
  18. Summer Road Trip 2013 is almost over, time to drive back home and start school. I think we have had enough of vacation and we are ready for school :)

  19. If my kids were in PS, today would be their first day. Instead we are halfway across the country visiting the Mayflower II and Plimouth Plantation.

Definite win :-D I didn't know they did overnights, that would be amazing!

  20. I watched the whole semester of Lewin lectures for the mechanics course and the electro-mag course. I loved them! The demonstrations are wonderful! They help me get over some conceptual humps while I was taking university physics. I didn't do the quizzes and test provided because I was already taking a physics class; I used the courses as a supplement instead. I ended up leading study groups because of my understanding of the concepts. Hope this helps! Sara
  21. Hello, My family is new to homeschooling. I'm excited and scared at the same time about this upcoming year. It will be our grand adventure! I have a son who is 10 and a daughter who is 9. We are really interested in the sciences and Lego robotics. Are there any WTMers in the FLW, Waynesville, or Rolla area? I'm so glad this forum exists, it has given me so many ideas. Thanks everyone! Sara
