  1. Thank you all for your help. I am torn between them. I feel like joining the community will take pressure off me but is also pricey. Doing it without the community will be cheaper but more pressure on me. I visited a community earlier in the year and from what I can tell, all the motions and stuff they use to teach I will be missing out on if I do from home. Right? Ugh...will be praying and trying to figure out which route to go. Thank again for all your help. I appreciate it!!
  2. Thank you, that does help :) As far as free resources....I thought some of it was only available to ppl who were part of a community. Is that the case for halfahundredacrewood? Also, is the guide self-explanatory as far as teaching them what they would learn at a community? Thanks for your help!
  3. Hello...I have been back and forth about putting my 1st grader in a community this year. I am wondering if anyone has gotten the Foundations guide and just done it themselves. Does the guide explain how to do it? Is it possible to teach them the content without the community? Thank you!
  4. Ok thank you all! That helps me. I'll look into OPGTR and FLL....and maybe get into my WRTR more! @SilverMoon....I thought that the title and explanation that I read meant that it teaches writing which leads into reading. So I just wasn't sure if that was what he needed since he has been reading. Thanks for your suggestions! :) I like the idea of not adding spelling or grammar yet. Thank you all! We start tomorrow! :thumbup1:

  6. I am kind of lost/confused about how to teach these.... My son is 5 y/o and we are about to start homeschooling next week. He is almost through 100 Easy Lessons, and is reading pretty well. Where do I go from here? Do I start having him memorize the phonograms? I know some people wait on writing, but he already writes on his own so I want to teach him properly. Do I teach this along with phonograms? And do I wait on spelling and grammar, or start now? I have Writing Road to Reading, but not sure if that's the way I want to go. Plus, the title implies that he doesn't know how to read yet....and he does. Any help/advice would be appreciated. I feel lost as to where to go from here....
  7. Thank you all! I am starting to get a better understanding of it....I'm excited about this kind of math for him! :) Now if I could just understand The Writing Road to Reading I might feel better about the coming year..... :/
  8. Thank you! I have looked at some and will look at more. :)
  9. I have ordered all my stuff for Miquon Math. I haven't thoroughly read anything yet, but have skimmed through the books. Any tips on starting out? Should I just let my kindergartner have free play with them? And if I do, how long before I start the Orange book? The lab books are a bit confusing for me as well...with no exact instruction on the pages. Maybe I need things a little more black and white. ;) I would appreciate any help with starting out. Thanks!
  10. Thank you both...that is very helpful! I do have a grip and plan to use it. I also like the idea of having him do it on different surfaces. Will check and see that my material is similar in method. Thank you!
  11. I have just ordered all my curriculum for K....except writing (and Bible...if I decide to order something)... I know there are some people who wait to do writing and don't focus on their penmanship at this point. My son will write on his own, so I thought I should start him on something so he isn't developing bad habits. Any thoughts on that? I was considering getting ZB, but I also have a bunch of different writing workbooks at home (Leapfrog, See&Feel, Teaching Tree, dry-erase, etc.). Will it mess him up if I just use the different ones that I have? Also saw that ZB lets you print papers, so I thought about just doing that....not sure if the price will balance out.... Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks :)
  12. Wow...thank you! You guys are a wealth of information! Good to know about Saxon Math, too....will be considering Singapore and the Miquon and c-rods. Thank you all so much....you have helped me not to feel so lost! :)
  13. I was considering Zaner-Bloser, as opposed to HWOT... but don't have experience with either. Thanks for the tip on Spelling. He knows how to count to 100+, count by tens, some addition, etc. I think he would do well skipping a kindergarten level math. I have considered some other options....I didn't know if I would like Singapore or if it would be too abstract. Was considering doing that when he got older. Would OPGTR be similar to what I'm already using? I think I would just like to finish what I have started....so I guess I could just teach him the phonics rules myself. Or do you know if Writing with Ease teaches the phonics rules? Thanks for your help!
  14. Hello! Looking for some help. :) My son is getting close to 5.5 years. We have about 20 lessons left in Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. He is reading very well. That is the only "formal" teaching we have done. Plan to start officially homeschooling next month. That said, I have two issues... 1. I struggle between using curriculum for Kindergarten or 1st grade. I have not started with much writing, so I know there are things that I can't do until he is writing. But, could I start with Saxon Math 1? And should I start with spelling? 2. The Well-Trained Mind says he should know the "major phonics rules" before 1st grade. Is there a book that teaches these to him? I am torn between Modern Curriculum Press and Explode the Code, but also not even sure if I need them b/c he can read. Do these teach phonics rules? I wish I could open them up and look at them before I buy! :/ I am trying to get things ordered and in order, but feeling a little lost! ~Kristina
