  1. Yeah, there is and I'm clearly not the only one who's noticed. My apologies; I missed your comment earlier in the thread.
  2. I agree. There is definitely a popular clique here and crossing them will bring out the daggers. It's always been that way in the 8-10 years I've been here but it seems worse since the last board upgrade. I have left a few times and for some reason I keep coming back but I'm not entirely sure why.
  3. Senator Mike Lee has just announced he also has tested positive.
  4. Same thing here. It's never-ending. If I see one more plug for Power Homeschool or Time 4 Learning I think I'm going to scream. I think there is a backlash against the amount of time many kids are spending on school with virtual learning. The idea that you can really educate your middle or high-schooler in an hour a day (because lining up a class to go to the bathroom takes hours, or something) is appealing. Throw in the "it's practically free and uses nothing but this awesome website that will totally figure out exactly how to teach your kid with its super-special AI and you don't have to lift a finger" and it's no wonder people are flocking to "homeschooling" as a solution. I tell people that education is like physical health -- free, fast, and easy don't exist in one space. You get to pick two, at best. The sooner you accept that you'll have to actually do some work to get results, the better off you'll be. But some people just have to have the homeschool crash diet and learn the hard way.
  5. I live in the house I grew up in. I miss my mom living here and doing all the cooking and laundry!!
  6. I have seen zero evidence of this but I will take your word for it. Doesn't change the fact that the parameters set forth here are far too vague.
  7. IMO, those are not the clear-cut lines the author thinks they are. What does s/he mean by "declares someone the winner who didn't get the most votes"? Popular votes? Electoral college votes? Didn't we just have an election in which the declared winner lost the popular vote? Was that a coup? The terms need to be better defined, IMO.
  8. Yeah, probably. I don't see what dems backing down first has to do with the military supporting any candidate though. But I guess I'm just not following your line of thought. I completely disagree that the military will take sides in any way, shape, or form here.
  9. Exactly. There is a lot of assumption in this argument that the military is monolithic in its political views, which it is not. And most military members I know, while they certainly have their own political viewpoints, feel their duty first and foremost to the country and the constitution and would be hesitant at best to act on orders to serve a person who was not duly elected, regardless of party.
  10. Thanks. I haven't heard that interpretation, although I could see the speaker stepping in temporarily as a stop-gap measure should things not be sorted out by Jan 20. My understanding is that if the electoral college fails to elect a president, the responsibility falls to the House itself, not the speaker and that the deadline for that should come before Jan 20. But I could be wrong. Either way, I agree with you that the military is not going to interfere with anything.
  11. I'm confused by this. Why would the presidency go to Pelosi in the first place, and second, you think the military will act independently instigate its own coup? What would make you expect that?
  12. It's well worth your $9.99. James Lindsay's work in this area is unparalleled.
  13. Seconding this. And adding The Coddling of the American Mind to the list as well. Just started reading it and it is fan-freaking-tastic.
  14. At least in our case, it's not that I can do it better or more easily. Between the two of us, dh is the better cook and since he has been home he does most of the cooking (which is fine by me), so it's not like he thought he was doing me some favor by "helping" or that he was taking over "my" job. But even I am capable of dumping meat and broth in a crock-pot and setting the temperature. So I suppose I just found it insulting that he didn't trust my methods, when clearly I've managed this recipe many times before and nobody here has died of food poisoning yet. And I think in the OP's case, winter coats aren't a matter of "who does it best"? But it's still annoying when your spouse suddenly doesn't trust you to do something that you've previously handled without any trouble. And I think annoyance is a completely valid feeling. Plus, it's inefficient. Most daily household and parenting jobs don't really require two heads, so having a conversation about staying in your lane is appropriate, I think. @lovinmyboys Sometimes I wonder if my dh isn't just kind of bored since he's not going out in the world as much as he used to. Maybe that's a factor in your case as well? At any rate, just wanted to tell you I totally get your feeling and I don't think it's an overreaction, although it's probably best handled by talking it out and giving the benefit of the doubt (preaching to myself here too).
  15. I know he's trying to be helpful. But yeah. It gets my goat for sure.
  16. Yes, it would and does irritate me. I have a similar situation with my dh. For years, he has gone to work during the day while I stayed home and educated the kids and took care of the household. Now that he works from home, he's constantly coming behind me and second-guessing what I'm doing. Yesterday we had a semi-argument over a crock-pot meal. He asked me in the morning if he should put the meal on before before he headed downstairs to his office. I said, "No, that one only needs a few hours to cook or it will fall apart. I'll put it on at lunchtime." Which I did. On low heat. The same way I've made this meal literally dozens of times before. Later that afternoon I happened by the crock-pot and noticed it had been turned to high. I know it's silly, but that really peeved me off. He said, "It still looked pink!" Well of course it did -- it still had three hours left to cook! The meal was fine but it galls me to be followed around and second-guessed all the time. All that just to say that I sympathize with you. I think for us both the wise move is to discuss our feelings at a time when we are calm and see if we can reach a new consensus on division of labor here in the "new normal."
  17. Definitely true. We have county water (so no well, although we have one on our property). But septic can be a huge ordeal. We have only one internet provider out here. Take it or leave it. Except for the sheriff, emergency services are volunteer, so response time may be slow (although we have excellent and dedicated volunteers). We do have mail service (USPS and shipping companies). But we are low on the totem pole when it comes to scraping our roads when it snows. Of course that's a slow process here in the South anyway!
  18. I've lived in the "country" all my life. I literally live in the house I grew up in. We have 3.5 acres. I wouldn't live anywhere else. I love the privacy and the ability to do whatever I want on my own land. We are near to a couple of small towns/cities and a couple of decent-sized cities so pretty much whatever we want is within a short drive (30-40 minutes tops). I am an introvert and don't miss people at all. In fact I've been thinking about planting some more trees so I can't see the neighbor's house across the hill. ๐Ÿ™‚ I definitely don't miss traffic. My sister lives in a huge city and, while I enjoy visiting her, I'd never in a million years live there. Some things you might want to think about... If you prefer to walk, use public transportation, bike, or otherwise avoid driving to pretty much everywhere, the country might not be for you. We do have folks out here who bike for fun but I think they're nuts. Curvy country roads and 55mph traffic are too scary for me to even think about riding a bike. The kids bike up and down our driveway. Having several acres, even if it's just yard and not an actual farm or something, is a TON of upkeep. We spend every weekend mowing, trimming, pulling weeds, etc. And half our property is field, which we have someone else mow every few weeks in the warmer seasons (here, that's like 9-10 months of the year). We can easily drop $1k in pine needles to mulch our natural areas. If you don't like yard work, or yard expenses, the country might not be for you. If you aren't okay with the occasional dog (or other animal!) wandering across your property, potentially getting into your trash or your garden, etc., the country might not be for you. Speaking of which, if you like city services like trash pick-up, the country might not be for you. We have it here, but it's a private service. We haul our own trash and recycling to the county dump. There's no such thing as leaf pick-up or anything like that. We burn our yard debris. There's never not a burn pile on the edge of our property. We do have the occasional noise issue, like a party with loud music. That's happened exactly once that I can recall in the time I've lived here, and the sheriff showed up and put a stop to it. More often we get people shooting firearms, whether target practicing on their own property or hunting, or riding ATV's and dirt bikes and such. Typically these are far enough away as to not be bothersome. That's the benefit of having acreage. Those are just off the top of my head. I wouldn't live anywhere but out here, but out here's not for everybody!
  19. I love Martin Luther's morning and evening prayers. Morning Prayer In the morning when you get up, make the sign of the holy cross and say: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then, kneeling or standing, repeat the Creed and the Lordโ€™s Prayer. If you choose, you may also say this little prayer: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. Then go joyfully to your work, singing a hymn, like that of the Ten Commandments, or whatever your devotion may suggest. Evening Prayer In the evening when you go to bed, make the sign of the holy cross and say: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then kneeling or standing, repeat the Creed and the Lordโ€™s Prayer. If you choose, you may also say this little prayer: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. Then go to sleep at once and in good cheer. I think I like his little instructions as much or more than the prayers themselves. ๐Ÿ˜Š
  20. Still on so far. The epidemiologist from our local teaching hospital said in his weekly update last week that trick-or-treating can be done safely with appropriate masks (not Halloween masks) and distancing. We will take ds9 as usual, unless things change drastically.
  21. That's hysterical! Maybe he should start thinking about an IPO? ๐Ÿ˜† It definitely isn't that smart. According to the vast number of political texts and voicemails I've been getting the last few months, "it" thinks I am 1) a man; 2) a different race; 3) of wildly different sociopolitical persuasions. The funniest thing is that I've had this cell phone number since 2001 so even if it did belong to someone else at some point, that point was nearly two decades ago!
  22. Yep. Just would have been harder to fit all that on a meme. ๐Ÿ˜‰
  23. In fairness, to a lot of people, the unicorn seems to be a symbol for "a curriculum that provides a solid education in the correct balance of financial investment and effort for our family." Which is great, even though it kind of misses the point of the meme. Then there are the others...
  24. I expected so. There are always a few (or more). I was just curious. I made that meme a few months ago and I'm always intrigued by the reaction it gets. ๐Ÿ™‚
  25. WWS is a great curriculum but IMO better if you are committed to homeschooling long-term, as I think you really need all three levels to get the most benefit from it. It's also incredibly intense and even SWB says that most 5th graders aren't ready for it. I did use it in 5th with my gifted oldest, and it went fine but we still went at half-pace. I wouldn't start that early with my younger kiddo, if I use WWS with him. Welcome to the club! ๐Ÿ™‚
