  1. If you are looking for a Classical Latin curriculum my humble opinion is Memoria Press would be rather challenging..here is the book list for 7th grade. They do suggest beginning or continuing Latin where they are. Seeing my own kids in action I realize every kid learns differently isn't that a great thing about homeschooling? 2. "Haven't looked at Memoria, seen so many bad reviews..I think I need to get over that? I read them in TWTM forums. I'll go check them out " This surprises me. I have only seen glowing reviews! One either likes this style of learning (say vs Sonlight) or not but I don't think anyone can argue the content of MP curriculum I don't think you'll find gaps, unapologetic views or bigotry, what I read and researched it is a solid education. It is hard to find someone who doesn't at least use some MP material, Latin, Christian Studies, Famous Men series, etc. I haven't been homeschooling as long as you, great job bybthe way! But I have learned after many purchases that one persons idea of wonderful definitely is not mine! There are so many types of homeschoolers now. At a convention it is awesome to see such a mix and range of people! But which ones are behind the avatar giving the advice and reviews? Anyway every child is different maybe your children will grow up to be more tolerant of others...maybe more "techy". Not argue with a Catholic that their not "Christian". Maybe your friend doesn't allow TV in the home? Sounds like to me your doing a great job maybe just need a change or add in extras. After I looked at a sample of the video of the Omnibus version, I could not see my children liking adults wearing togas narrating the fake scenes! I realize the book looks more rich but anyway I guess we have to know what we are willing to tolerate. When fellow Christians are writing textbooks and aren't so tolerating of others it says volumes though. I guess they have the clientele and it is profitable for them. Ok, can you ask your friend what her feelings are on people who aren't "reformed"? Has using Omnibus changed her thoughts and opinions on Catholics, Orthodoxs, etc? What about her children? Maybe its not really an issue? I personally don't know because I haven't looked at it more than the samples and reading about the authors. God bless you in your decision!
  3. -lifesadream83 I would love to hear more about combining TWTM with Sonlight. I see you use Sonlight for your readers, do you use Sonlight for history and the IG? I'm thinking of combining Memoria Press with Sonlight. Kids will be doing 1st grade and MP doesn't do history until the summer with reading SOTW. Not sure I'm liking Sonlight core A history, jumps around. But open to other cores and this being different in older grades. But thinking MFW 1st would be easy to supplement with Sonlight for the book basket. decisions..Ugh!
  4. I really wanted Sonlight to work for my kids, but I agree with the above poster,I struggle with it. I find it disjointed, it did not flow for me. I tried P4/5 & core A only. Maybe upper cores are better? We just read the read aloud books & Bible now and I don't open the binder or LA at all. The catalog looks so tempting but reality is different, for our family anyway. I am also looking at MFW & HOD, I am leaning towards MFW because you can combine grades if you need that. I want to love HOD book choices but the younger years are not exciting me. I like that MFW uses SOTW Vol 2-4 and looks like this will be a fun way to implement it. Have you looked at Memoria Press packages?
  5. My first thought was Angelicum Academy too! Would Mother of Divine Grace School history syllabus work? http://www.motherofdivinegrace.org/curriculum/syllabus/id/12 Funny you mention MFW, that's what I'm considering until I get to the dialectical stage of MODG. would you recommend MFW in the younger grades? I like that they use SOTW. I was very interested in Veritas Press for awhile...this art lover is intrigued by Phonics Museum! But after searching on this forum for reviews I read about Doug Wilson. Reformed theology isn't the only issues I have. I realize one could sub things out and add things in to reflect different view points, but it would be nice to not have to work around that. VP has such nice materials its such a shame for us "non-reformed", but I think they take it a step further, which is their right of course, but they are very "unapologetic Christians'. That said I was intrigued to get my VP catalog out and look again...yeah it does look nice!
  6. I have looked at MIF. Do you need the teachers manual to teach this?
  7. I found your post! Great to hear from somebody who does this! What you said about Sonlight is I'm afraid would happen to us.. but without doing it I didn't know for sure. My kids have a tendency to look at me strange when I attempt to read book after book! When they can read themselves it might be different. So great! I'll get MP complete and buy the Sonlight IG and then either buy or use the library for the books. Do you follow there schedule or just look up the book in the IG when you read it?
  8. Okay I LOVE the looks of Memoria Press's complete sets. I have no doubt my kids would get a great education with them. I am intrigued by the gentle introduction to Latin as well as many other things they offer. But the Sonlight catalog with the literature looks so tempting. My question is with Sonlight you hear how horrible the LA is, so does this make the books read alouds only? Would I have any need for the IG? Since I would have to purchase everything anyway like math, LA, writing, science, art, etc. why wouldn't I just buy Memoria Press's complete set and use sonlight as a read aloud list? Or would I be missing the whole point of Sonlight? Or would I be doing to much with both? Unless someone has some insight on this, my plan as of now for 1st grade is Memoria Press and use Sonlight core A as read alouds. Thank you!
  9. Paradox.. Can I ask what you moved on to? We are considering MP as well.
  10. Thanks Tess..great advice! Morgan..I was wondering about the lesson plans...I emailed them but haven't heard back..:(
  11. Thank you all for the advice...I did it again though ..I stumbled across another option, St Thomas Aquinas Academy (we are catholic). For kindergaten they actually recommend FIAR VOL. 1.. And HWOT & TCTR 100, gosh zi really like the looks of this program...no sample lessons though. I feel I need a little structure though because I got a lot of eye rolling from family members when I announced we would be homeschooling...so they are literally expecting me to just take them to park everyday!
  12. ^Morgan...yes that is what I was wondering if the read alouds tied in...and I would be swapping out to much to make it work..thanks! Ok maybe I'll do both Sonlight and row a book from FIAR each week as well like "delightfullearning" http://delightfullearning.blogspot.com/search/label/Sonlight.
  13. Thank you...ill go check your blog out right now!
  14. Posted this in pre-k/k but didn't get any response. So here goes.. I am all over the board with deciding on our homeschool plans. This will be my first year homeschooling. I have a daughter 5, who did last year in a pre-k in a parochial school. Also have a 4 and 2 1/2 yr old. Plan on doing Math In Focus (already purchased at a convention) w/ 5 yr old Progressive Phonics, TCTR IN 100 HWOT- Letters & Numbers for Me with 5 yr old & My First School Book with younger two? Earlybird or Mathematical Reasoning 2 with 4 yr old..? A to Z Early Childhood Curriculum for two youngest? I would do Sonlight P 4/5 if it wasn't for all the bunny books...my 5 yr old says yuck! I've read her Beatrix Potter and while she did enjoy them she just loves picture books like Angus Lost, Blueberries for Sal, etc. I do have FIAR but as a new homeschool Mom I think I need lesson plans...hence Sonlight. If p 3/4 had a structured day I think I would do this. I like the looks of Sonlight Core A but the advisors say the little ones will always be left behind. maybe I could just repeat core A again next year...? Ugh...just don't like half of the books in p 4/5. Yes I guess I could just read a book or story a day but I really want a structure at least for the first year...even if I end up scraping it when I get my groove. Maybe swap out the "bunny" books for the p 3/4 books? Easy Classical Kindergarten looks good too, swapping out math. Literature pockets look cute too, daughter loves, loves crafts! Which brings me to my next option...Memoria Press. I'm thinking about just doing my individual math & phonics with the kids and bringing them together with MP Kindergarten Read-Aloud Program with the Enrichment guide! Ahh I never dreamed there would be so many great options, I want to do it all! I'm also thinking I could bring the kids together to do MP JR K (with JR K read alouds) and do the age appropriate math & phonics. Then last night I stumbled upon Timberdoodle and ok I really need reeled in, my husband would be grateful! Thank you!
