  1. Oops, somehow I goofed this up on my phone. Crazyforlatin, by 9th youll be an experienced homeschool parent!
  2. Stretch a point and throw in some Wodehouse? He's the best antidepressant I know, and he did spend time in America ;). Start with the Bertie and Jeeves stories.
  3. BYU has an accredited high school program: www.is.byu.edu. It's not free, but it's more reasonable than many.
  4. My 7th grader is loving Udacity's Intro to Computer Science. The Udacity format is good if you're looking for feedback--nearly each short video is followed by a quiz.
  5. Well, in my Los Angeles suburb, this is turning out to be harder than I expected. The public schools don't want to have anything to do with us--in many cases, can't even be bothered to respond to emails or phone calls. Some of the private schools are a bit friendlier, but the smaller ones often don't offer much in the way of AP classes and are not interested in going out of their way for an outside student (I can't say I blame them for that). I'm getting nervous and starting to fantasize about a visit to grandparents in another state, if their local schools turn out to be more accommodating.
  6. Thanks--it's nice to have a new angle on a favorite subject.
  7. The Homeschool Buyers Coop has a sale on Thinkwell courses this week. Anyone want to share their experiences? I'd be particularly interested in comments on their Calculus BC class.
  8. Maybe someone could comment on what I'm contemplating? DS1 is a reluctant (but improving!) writer. We've done some Writing Strands, some WWS, some homemade, interest-led writing, and this year he's doing a composition class with Write at Home. I'd thought about next year (junior year) having him do PAH's SAT essay class followed by more homemade writing with me in the fall, then the Lukeion course in the spring. He would then do PAH's AP English Language course senior year. Is this all backwards? The advantage of doing the Lukeion course next year would be that it would coincide with ancient history/lit, which he really likes. I'm prepared to be set straight, though.
  9. What did you do after all four levels of Cambridge Latin? What do you wish you'd done? Thanks!
  10. We enjoyed combining this with some of the stories from Boccaccio's Decameron, one of Chaucer's sources.
  11. I would just make sure he doesn't have Internet access while he's alone. Besides that, go for it!
  12. I'd love it if one of you could link to this syllabus. Regentrude, given the wackiness of the new AP scheme, what would you do with a bright student interested in physics where dual enrollment would be difficult?
  13. Ds1 has been following this same sequence--we did astronomy in 9th.
  14. OK, my mouth is starting to water as the holiday sales heat up. I'm already fully loaded up with Vandiver courses, but would love to hear your experiences with other lit. professors/courses and especially history courses. Thanks!
  15. I just found this, and wondered if anyone (Californian or not) has tried it. Thanks!
  16. We did astronomy last year with the Teaching Co. course, textbook by the lecturer, and a telescope. The lecturer is very engaging--he conveys the enthusiasm of a person who has really found his calling. I made the kids take notes on the lectures, and read topics of interest to them in the textbook.
  17. I had all kinds of problems with K9--when the site went down, which it did regularly, we couldn't get any internet at all without uninstalling the dang thing. Our current regime, which is working well, is a combination of OpenDNS (works through the router, so for all devices at once), safe mode on Google and YouTube, and the various Google Chrome browser add-ons. OpenDNS blocked the website for my son's judo website, which was just about the level of sensitivity I wanted. (It was easy to add it to the whitelist, btw.)
