  1. WWE1 and WWE2 broke that down for my boys. One is copy and narration. The second is copy, narration, and dictation. ELTL3 is going well for us. So maybe taking a month or more and doing the WWE 1-4 hardcover parent book would help?
  2. Eddie Bauer fan here. The color lasts a long time. I like the petite, short, reg, tall pant choices. I can get the short and not have to hem. I'm 5'3 on a good day. The shirts are cool and fitted without being exposed.
  3. Aops has Alcumus. Its online if he wants a computer review program. Still need a book though. Jacobs alg might appeal and then follow up with aops for depth with a stem kid. Do alcumus along with both.
  4. We started in second grade with an all in one workbook from rainbow resource. He had to do any two page spread on his own before mom started school. I would check it and give a sticker according to how much was right. It gave him the confidence to be independent in other subjects. It helped that he was accelerated in most subjects so his grade level workbook was super easy. When the book was done then he was done. I didnt buy another or add in another subject. It was his responsibility to finish it but his choice how long it took. Meaning he had to do a spread a day but if he took it to evening church service or a doctors apt waiting room and did extra then he could clearly see the finish line coming sooner. He will get the third grade book this fall and start again. He now does math mammoth, geography, and eltl independently.
  5. I like our little loop but I am one that worries about finishing completely by a certain time. For my accountability I guess. To answer Mama Anna: We only do it with short curriculum. Ellen Mchenry sciences are only about eight lessons so looping them with art and Mind benders (we do a couple pages at a time) works well so I "can check the box". I block schedule every other month sotw history with eltl english because both require alot of reading.
  6. So i bought the protozoa one and the botany one last night. I couldnt stop thinking about it. My boys had this week off of formal h. schooling and played prodigy all week. We need something else we can do outside. It was only $29 total for the digital of both.
  7. We want to do the swamp water one but it says ages 10-. The Elements was 8-. Botany is 8-.
  8. No mom cut here but I've got the bathroom lighthouse hand painted with oils by my husbands grandma. Now i have the urge to remove them. They are all like my mother in law to a T. "Dont ripe the wrapping paper dear, grandma saves that!" She once reused a gift tag to her own daughter that still had writing on it from when she used it for her daughters ex boyfriend.
  9. We just found Prodigy two days ago. They played it so long my computer shut down so it didn't melt! It's a flash game that makes the fan run constantly. They played it for an hour today before the screen started blinking and I had to kick them off. I wish I could lock my younger son into a grade level. It had him doing mean, median, and mode. He eventually became tired and the scrap paper became full. My older son would never stop if the computer didn't make him.
  10. I am wondering about your thoughts on apologia young explorer series verse John Tiner's exploring the world of series. We just finished Ellen Mchenry's the elements and loved it. We loved the games, songs, challenge to memorize the table, few worksheets and the finger print people. They memorized half the table and can explain what most are used for. We dont want science to end over the summer. I have apologia zoology 3 land animals and their botany book. I would rather do what I know we love which is mchenry's stuff but we already own this. I dont want to kill their love of science and I worry apologia might do that. It seems long, lacking cartoon figures, and overly wordy. I want them to memorize some of the classifications of the animal kingdom though or learn about cells and photosynthesis. Some vocab like mchenry had would be nice without turning them off. I own Tiner's physics which was going to be 1. A coop class next year and 2. Continues our welltrainedmind science cycle next year. So i dont care to start that early. There is a biology one or the medicine one im interested in for the summer. Is mchenry's botany and cell book as good as elements? I'd be willing to get the digial download of those. My boys like the challenge of memorizing if the stuff is explained alittle with it. What have you had luck with? They are young boys with lots of questions. We would like a two to three day a week and one hour or so a day science to end in the fall. The middle of the day is too hot to go outside.
  11. Mine dont get electronics until school is done. So some days none because they choose to play make believe or knexs or something instead. Other days maybe one episode and they are turning it off themselves. They are very concerned with working their muscles right now to be healthy. They have dug two big holes in the backyard that are five feet across and four feet deep. The first kept filling with rain so they started the second while they waiting for the first to dry out. I only connect the wii on weeks off if they remember to ask me. We school four weeks on and one off. They havent had the wii since before christmas. I want them to self regulate and they do except the wii. Mario can turn into an all day thing and then they are grumpy after.
  12. I have a rising 3rd grader next year too. We have used wwe 1-3. He's got a great memory so he became bore so fast. We like whole stories too. We didn't know this till we got started though. I was looking into CAP fable but settled with learning to write book reports till I find something else. So I will be listening to what others suggest.
  13. I wouldn't do it if the classes are not academic box checking for me type classes. Math has to be done four days a week, IMO. I also wouldn't give away core classes. If I can check off Science and History and Art and Poetry then maybe. I could do the core classes the rest of the time, probably. It sounds like the charter can go though. Your child will adjust. edited to add: I wouldn't give up Science and History though. Those are the classes that we enjoy together so they see mommy isn't all work with no fun.
  14. I almost failed my ACT (didn't take it seriously) but I did awsome on the college given placement tests and went into 2nd year classes and higher. The university cared more about the placement tests and could make money if you came unprepared for college.
  15. Tangrams, Verbal Math books for car rides. Then, we also liked math mammoth 1-6 digital download. It's cheap and I can pull the sections I want, print as many times as I want, and have an outline of what to cover. I'm a box checker at heart.
  16. I like Beast but also Math Mammoth for the days he doesn't want to think. It's very cheap in the digital version and I'm trying to teach work ethics regardless of acceleration. I like Mind Benders as well. Sometimes his logic on his own is so off it makes me want to :banghead: . He's a discuss aloud child so everyone has to hear these conclusions that didn't make sense to topics kids are not usually thinking about. Magic School Bus DVD collection was good for the 3-5 age and Popular Mechanics for Kids on PBS from 5-7. A library card for sure! Snap Circuits and Knex for Physics and McHenry's The Elements for Chemistry. (Love the songs and websites it includes) An all in one spelling program like Spelling Plus k-6. Basically any all in one program, lol. It's cheap and after going the expensive Saxon phonics and math route we learned quick. I'll have to look into the MCT LA again, we currently use ELTL and WWE but it isn't the best fit. I read some past threads on MCT and it seemed a mixed bag so I quit.
  17. My son's journey is more of the rocket ship type also. We are at PreAlg (debating when to start) right now. This morning on his math mammoth 5 chapter decimals he figured out the tricks before they were presented in the lesson. He's done this for the whole chapter. I told him decimals might be hard (expecting the wall of learning that people keep telling me about) but he's discovered it all just fine. I'm wondering if we do Aops PreAlg (that I just bought) or MM6 (old version) next fall. We might bounce back and forth as the rocket blasts and refuels. Sorry I'm no help. :)
  18. The Let's Go Learn Dora and Doma gave me my confidence to accelerate. I have many homeschool friends that believe in "no multiplication before 3rd grade" and "no algebra before 7th grade". So I had to see if my son was really doing it and retaining or were my friends right. The tests showed he knew stuff that I haven't even taught him yet, formally anyway. Great confidence builder for my husband and I. Great proof to the in-laws that hated the thought of homeschooling. We are about to take it a second time next week. As for curriculum, Spelling Plus k-6 is easy to place and then accelerate without breaking the bank. Math Mammoth 1-6 digital download is what we use to save costs also. I only print what is needed. We originally used Saxon, before testing, and we did K-3 in one year. My husband almost had a heart attack with the price! I like the well trained mind way for history and science because I can make it his level by my choice of library books. So every couple months, when he makes a jump, I increase book levels. I agree with previous posts that you might not be doing him justice in life if your not challenging him at some point. Math does seem to be the easiest to do this with at first. Good Luck!
  19. I'm going through the same anxiety right now. We did MM 1-6, the old version. I've heard so many times not to jump around with math. Pick one and stick to it but adapt. I don't want to jump around in the higher math's either. I'd like a straight progression that I don't have to think each year about what to do next. But my kid likes Beast so we can move onto AoPS to solve this. For you, I'm wondering if Saxon would be your relief? Test to see where to start. Lots of problems. No more thinking from here to graduation (hopefully)
  20. I found the website homeschoolcpa.com after I started this topic. It was very helpful. I showed it to the other person I'm working with and we agree on the plan ahead. The website said a personal checking account can look like a for-profit sole proprietorship if it was opened with a SSN and personal name. It said you are automatically assumed to be a nonprofit if under $5000 and have a board. Most become nonprofit to avoid paying taxes on their surplus but we spend everything at the end of the year. Thank you. I started this when I was having no luck but shortly after I found what I wanted to know.
  21. Our small coop is wondering if we should be applying for 501c(3) nonprofit status. I did some research and I need to do some more. I found out about 501c(7) social group status. But I would like to hear if we need to do any of this. They started the group 15 yrs ago. The group consists of 17 families with a max (registration day) $1,500 and quickly falls to $600 when receipts are turned in that week. The $500 of the $600 is a gift given 15 yrs ago to start the group. We are considering giving it back to the person (if we can find them) and closing the checking account. The bank told us we should close it because no one wants to put their social security number on the account and we don't have a business status. She also said there is never much money in it and we switch people often. We could go back to a cash box and hand written receipt way. A CPA suggested we get 501c(3) status but she doesn't know the little money we have and the plans to NOT grow. She always thinks big. What does your coop do? Is there other government forms we should have filled out? I'm new to this coop but I'm becoming the financial person.
  22. My 6 yr old loved it. Yes, we read fast but he listened. They liked the outside part too. We will go multiple times I'm sure.
  23. My son just told me he didn't care to do the coop next year. Music to my ears except my husband and I were asked three weeks ago to be on the coop board for next year. We get voted in on Wednesday and my address is already on the check book. :banghead: My son said he liked the one year on one year off that we've done so far. So next year would be a year off coop and they happen to want to make coop EVERY Friday now and not just twice a month. They also want bigger classroom sizes which we would rather have small discussion groups. The young kids are constantly told to be quiet and raise their hand which isn't what they need.
  24. I like the MEOMS book from what I can see. We had our first coop planning meeting last night and they want to make it every week now. That's 23 Friday's for one hour. A lot more than twice a month. I'm nervous about the work ethic and perseverance in a math club class. None of us in my coop have ever seen a math club outside of my small one in public school. Thank you for the input. I'll probably have to do both MEOMS and business math to have enough. Searching for "math circles" was a big help! I found a thread that led me to a math circles diary book. Thank you.
