  1. We did gr. 1, 4, and 5.

Gr. 1 is just phonics review, spelling, making simple sentences that are complete and written correctly, and some short stories to complete (2-4) sentences based on picture. Ds 6 finished it in one semester.

Grade 4 and 5 are fairly self explanatory that we could follow for the most part and usually we did not need TM (other then for grading tests or figuring out some of the diagraming- I am terrible at it so I needed help explaining it). Instructions for writing assignments were very well explained.

The only reason I changed this year because ds needs more help with writing portion. He does not do well with "write a research report on animal/country/person from blank even if there is many sections and subsections and samples how it is done. This year we are trying WWS level 1 and see how he does with it.  I do have CTGE grade 6 ready just in case WWS does not work.

    I hope it makes sense.

  2. When I talk meeting others, I do not mean just for the summer, but year round.

Every class that would be geared towards dc age does not interest them (at least with the programs they have right now. They usually rotate them, so I will have to wait until next rotation)

The 3 local parks that we have gets taken over by middle and high schoolers (age 12+) starting about 4 pm. Majority of them are extremely rude, pushing, shoving, using inappropriate language. No concideration for smaller children that may be at the park at that time. They just plow through to get to what ever place they have to get. So, in a way it would be somewhat dangerous if I took all of my kids there with youngest being 2. I figured, kids have no parental supervision so they do what they want. Another thing that happen more than once which was a shocker to me personally, more than one kid told my oldest that they would no play with him because he was homeschooled. Ds was very upset by that. Before 4 pm, no kids (other than babies and toddlers-age 3-4 and under) are at the park since school does not let our until 3:30 pm.

    Keep ideas rolling

  3. Edit

---you are not in a homeschool co-op or homeschool group

---there are no kids of similar age kids on your street to play with (homeschooled or public schooled)- well, there is one family here few houses from us with same age boy as ds, but the mother keeps bugging me to put my kids in public school, so them I do not count.

---you are not part of the church or any church group

---you are not in sports or arts (band, drama, dancing, etc.)

---you are not part of 4H, girl scouts, boy scouts and other similar organizations.

This year is turning out to be extra challenging in this department. Some people we knew moved away so we have to start from scratch so to speak. Other than going to paid classes at the community center or art center I have not been able to come up with anything else.

Any suggestion would be most welcome and much appreciated.

  5. Thank you ladies for all the suggestions.

I' ve sat down and figured that with 6 day school week I can do most, but not all of it.

Kidcoder only if ds wants to it himself after school work is done. Probably same with piano as he is my science/math child and I was thinking piano as something different from what he would normaly go for.

And I will drop formal logic until next year. I may consider getting few computer games from Critical thinking company just to play for fun when ever kids feel like but not as requited subject.

With all this, I will have 4.5 hours Monday- Thursday, about 3 hours on Friday and 2 hours on Saturday( which is art, science labs, and reading).

That should leave time for possible hobbies, pleasure reading, some computer play time and activity or two here and there.

  6. I would appreciate any commentary on my 6th grade plans for ds who will be 11 when we start. The more I look at the list, the more I think this is way too much. But then, it may not be since this is my first time doing 6th grade. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thank you ladies.

  7. I was refering to the actual videos (we did a trial run when they had $99 special) which we stopped after about 3 weeks. We have been doing BJU math starting with grade 2 book, so there has not been any curriculum hopping. The problem with BJU videos is that there is too much talking that is not math talk but rather life exaples which seemed to make ds tune out the instructor. Unless it is just the instructor himself and how he presents the lesson. It could be that the grade 8 teacher keeps his attention better. Up to now, we have been doing it without the videos and ds has a pretty fast grasp on concepts so that I have to do very little explaing before he gets it. Of course, if he needs more explaing, than I will do that as much as needed. For far , I have not had any problems teaching and showing what had to be done.

  8. Would it be advisable to start Videotext Math in 6th grade (11yo)? Currently ds is finishing up BJU math 6 and I do not like the look of BJU math 7. Even ds mentioned that there is too much talking and not enough math in the videos that we were able to watch. So, I am thinking to either stick with BJU math and do grade 8 which is pre-algebra according to the book instead of grade 7, or just switch to a different publisher. That is where Videotext comes in. I have spoken with the publisher and they seem to think it is fine as long as all of the problems, quizzes and extra practice problems are done by the student (would that be overkill??) so that he gets the material. Another option is to do Saxon math starting at what ever level he places and stick with it through highschool. Most importantly, to keep in mind that this is for a student who plans to go into math/science fields eventually, most likely some type of engineering degree.

I would appreciate any advise or direction.

    Thank you.
