  1. DH and I arrived just north of D.C. about a hour ago, and will drive home in the morning as long as the water on the roadways doesn't freeze overnight. Thank you VDOT for snowplows and brine, and for the great website with information on weather and road conditions! :) The interstate never became impassable even during heavy snow and mountain terrain. Thanks for all your help!
  2. Congratulations! What a lovely name!
  3. Yes, I saw the infamous D.C. "snow hole" on a forecast model snow prediction map today!!! We were initially going to fly into Frederick, MD, but as you mentioned, snow in your area is notoriously difficult to predict, so driving is likely the best choice. Thanks for the help!
  4. I agree with button; stress due to injury and pain can cause thermo-regulation issues, and the three games he played might have exacerbated the problem. I see that he is asleep, so hopefully he will feel much better in the morning.
  5. DS14 is on a class trip to Washington, D.C. this week. DH and I are either flying in or driving to pick him up on Wednesday. If the snow predictions verify, then there might be 2-3 inches of snow in D.C., and up to 4 inches (or more) in the northern suburbs (NWS snow map). My question is, how will the snow affect the roads in the area? Will it shut down the city/suburbs, or does the area have plenty of snow removal equipment so that people can get around? I'm guessing you do and it will be fine, but I live in an area where one inch of snow shuts down the city and thus feel compelled to ask. :o We have a 4-wheel drive truck and snow chains (overkill, I know) in case of a snow apocalypse. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
  6. I didn't want to date DH as he was much too good-looking for my taste; I thought he was a "player" and interested in one thing (he was). So, I wouldn't give him my phone number for three months, and then wouldn't get "serious" for "an eternity" (his words). We eventually realized that this was true love; 25 years and two children later, we are still very much in love.
  7. Possible contributors: Hypothyroid, hormonal changes (low estrogen and or high cortisol), anemia, insomnia, stress, too much sugar in diet, not enough exercise. Oh, almost forgot one of the biggest winter culprits: Low humidity! Low humidity dries out the skin and brings out fine lines and wrinkles. Unless you live in the southern hemisphere, put a pot of water on the stove and let it simmer all day. I've put water in the crock pot, leave it uncovered, and leave it on all day.
  8. I'm 55, and found that classics are better as I age: My current spring uniform is black, blue, or gray skinny jeans, fitted t-shirt, and ballerina flats or cute flat sandals when the temps get above 80. I only buy a few pieces per season, and get the best quality I can afford because I like to keep and wear things for several years. My mom is small and petite like you, and she does best with tops with a fitted waist, jackets and sweaters are not much shorter than hip level, and she never wears the cute, printed flowy tops that are so popular right now. You can wear these types of tops, but if you do, pair them with skinny pants and make sure the top isn't too long (no more than an inch longer than your rear end.
  9. Police stations have security cameras; the person should not just drop the phone off without identifying herself and how she got possession of the phone, otherwise the police will bring her in for questioning and she may even be a suspect.
  10. Does the three-foot tall stuffed polar who lives on our hall bench count??? Oh, and the tarantula who sits on the shoulder of our "naked lady" statue in our other hallway. It's only one bre@$t that's showing, so the tarantula's legs cover up the nakedness and keep the teenaged boys from staring at her. Maybe I should knit her a bikini top...
  11. Ha ha; my name is trulycrabby, and I buy math curriculum even though ds14 hasn't homeschooling in two years. :) This year I've bought about five Dolciani algebra books (his wonderful school uses Dolciani Algebra textbooks); several geometry texts, several books on Euclid and Euclidian geometry, Art of Problem Soving Geometry, Art of Problem Solving Probability, and a linear algebra textbook. Don't even get me started on the physics and chemistry texts...
  12. I don't think it's necessarily a male trait to be at a loss for words and/or unsure about how to comfort someone who is upset, esp. when that person is an adult.
  13. A burst ovarian cyst can be a medical emergency, and you can have pain and complications from scarring years in the future. I know all this from personal experience. I went back and reread your post-complex cyst-you need to have it removed. Risk of it developing into ovarian cancer is not big; but it's enough of a concern that you need to have it removed.
  14. Shirley you're joking...my cats would eviscerate me it I tried to brush their teeth... :ack2:
  15. My mother started having panic attacks about 15 years ago; tests showed that she had sick sinus syndrome and needed a cardiac pacemaker. My mother-in-law has panic attacks caused by atrial fibrillation. In my opinion, the sudden onset of panic episodes might indicate a physiologic cause, and she should go to a doctor to rule out cardiac, thyroid, or other endocrine issues. If she is in perimenopause or menopause? Hormone fluctuations can cause panic attacks. Is she anemic? Last thing; here's an article on the body's pH and panic attacks: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/panic-attacks-as-ph-problem/
  16. Flu B is primarily intestinal; and her symptoms are similar to circulating flu A strains. If she doesn't want to go to the doc and get a flu test and Tamiflu, then my recommendation is for her to get sambucol/elderberry syrup or gummies, and start eating them like candy. I hope she feels better very soon! :grouphug:
  17. Before you decide on tile, go to a flooring store and walk on luxury vinyl tile (tile planks), which usually has cork backing and is lovely and forgiving to walk on. Our whole house has it, and we loved it so much that we had it installed in the office spaces of three of our commercial buildings.
  18. Google says it could be caused by a variety of things: A common one is "sea bather's itch:" Caused by exposure to the larval form of tiny jellyfish or other larvae too small to see. https://www.sharecare.com/health/skin-disorders/what-cause-rash-day-beach
  19. I hope you feel better very soon! :grouphug:
  20. Here is a link that explains some of the common jewelry hallmarks. For example, ".750" means the metal is 18 karat gold, "14k GP" means 14k gold plated, and "pall" means palladium. https://www.leaf.tv/articles/what-is-the-meaning-of-numbers-on-jewelry/
  21. I would see if there is an independent jewelry appraiser in your area, and schedule a consultation/appraisal. The independent appraiser will give you an accurate valuation and description of the jewelry, and will be able to identify natural and synthetic gemstones. https://www.americangemsociety.org/page/independentcertified I am an amateur gemologist; I never got certification because it is a hobby, but if you want to pm me photos of a few of the pieces, I would be happy to take a look and recommend whether you should get them appraised. Also, if there are hallmarks (stamps/engraving in the metal), I can often tell you the metal and often the manufacturer, which will identify whether it is a valuable piece or costume. No charge; I do this because it is fun.
