  1. This sounds really intriguing. I had actually thought about using the BF guide for assignments to go with SCM, but I suppose it would work well with anything 😊 I'll look forward to seeing your review of AGF.
  2. Hmmm...I didn't know about the extras in the back. Is there a sample anywhere? I don't see it on the regular sample?
  3. Thanks for your responses. Those are definitely the ones I'm leaning most towards - and perhaps HOD but crossing out some of the busy work. I went ahead and downloaded some of A Gentle Feast so I could get a better feel for it. Too many options 😊
  4. Hi ladies, So I am trying to pick something to start with my kiddos in January. We will want to start at the Civil War roughly. My philosophy of education is moving more in the direction of CM, but not entirely. My homeschool "mentors" are Circe and Center for Lit if that helps. Here are some things I like about different curricula out there. The book choices of A Gentle Feast, HOD, and Ambleside. The essay and research assignments of Beautiful Feet. The simplicity of SCM that leaves ample room for discussion. We aren't much of a project/crafty family. I enjoy being in the same time period but realize a 7th grader won't be reading what a 2nd grader is. I want restful learning, but deep discussions, assignments of some sort, and flexibility. I don't want to pick a few books and plan it all myself, but don't want to be enslaved to boxes. I'm particularly intrigued by A Gentle Feast and Wayfarers. I believe in narration and definitely want to include it, but also want to incorporate more than just that. (Like BF assignments) That said - I don't really want to use BF. Any suggestions of where to start?
  5. Hi ladies I'm looking for ideas for games (board and cards) to play together as a family. What are your favorites? Our kids are ages 7-13. Thanks!!
  6. Thanks! I'm thinking way ahead but have my eye on Wayfarers and A Gentle Feast. They both look great, and I'd love for it to be flexible vs scripted, but do like the inclusion of discussion points. Thanks for your thoughts.
  7. Hi ladies Quick question about wayfarers. Does it include good discussion questions? Or do you just have kiddos narrate what you've read? I'm speaking of 5th and 8th grades. Thanks!
  8. Hmm.....it's Derek Owens' class. She says he gives them certain problems and says to practice with the calculator but then says don't do any other problems with one. I assume he's just getting them used to them??
  9. Hi ladies, Do any of you have a calculator that you like? My daughter is starting Prealgebra. Thanks!
  10. We are using levels 2, 4, and 7 for language arts. All three are hits here so far. We are two weeks in. There's a good balance of grammar, reading, writing and spelling. Geography is incorporated also which makes me happy! And for levels 4 and 7, they draw or paint some, which makes them happy! It's a nice break from rod and staff and some of the other things we've used. Not sure how long we'll use it (after this year), but so far I am very pleased.
  11. Hi ladies! I'm going to list a few books about pilgrims, colonial times, etc..... can you let me know your favorites and why? I'm trying to narrow this down significantly. -the landing of the pilgrims -our America.....the pilgrim adventure -Peter and the pilgrims -if you sailed on the mayflower -pilgrim Kate -boys and girls of colonial days -Sarah's new world -Squanto friend of the pilgrims -who's that stepping on Plymouth Rock i'd love to only use about 3-4 of those. thanks!
  12. Hi ladies, My rising 7th grader is going to take prealgebra with Derek Owens starting in August. She finished Rod and Staff 6 back in march so I bought TT prealgebra just for kicks for her to do the rest of the year and into this summer. I know TT isn't as challenging as many others, but I figured it couldn't hurt to do some of it before starting DO prealgebra next. So here is the question. She did standardized testing recently. She did amazingly well across the board but her lowest scores were in math, particularly number relationships. We own all of the Math Mammoth series and I was thinking about having her do the workbooks Decimals, Fractions and Percents. (3 different workbooks in the blue series) Do you think it's better to go that route (Math Mammoth) and hope that solidifies the number relationships better or continue with TT prealgebra? I've never used either of those options. We typically use CLE but this particular child did R&S. None have used MM solely. Just supplemental occasionally. Thanks!
  13. Thanks. That's kind of why I thought Omnibus III might work. I had heard it was easier reading than I and II. What you wrote helped a lot. Thanks for taking the time. I want my kids to learn, to love what they learn, to grow from what they learn and prayerfully be spiritually stronger at the end. If that happens while using curriculum that is advanced and like college work when they are in 10th grade, fine. But I'm more concerned with them growing and having interest and passion in what we are learning. I'll take another look at the samples in the VP website.
  14. Thanks for responding. I should have included - we have used 3 years of HOD and are taking off this year to bring back all my kids into history together one more time. We love HOD. I just have wanted to do more of a Great Books study at least once or twice.
  15. Hi ladies, For those familiar with Omnibus, tell me if this sounds like a good fit. 7th - american history year using many sources 8th - omnibus III primary and secondary 9th - HOD world geography 10th - HOD world history 11th and 12th - HOD American history and government/economics I'm trying to decide whether to stretch out American history over 2 years prior to the HOD run for high school or plug in Omnibus III in 8th grade. I love the idea of Omnibus but really am drawn to HOD high school. Wondering if that sounds like the next thing to plug in there. Thanks!!!
  16. Hi ladies I've been seeing a lot lately about A Gentle Feast curriculum and Charlotte Mason Intitute's Alveary. Can anyone compare the two and tell me pros and cons of both if you have used them? Also - how would you compare them to Ambleside and Simply Charlotte Mason? Thanks!
  17. Ranger rick NatGeo kids Cobblestone Ask My favorite is cobblestone!
  18. My oldest is signed up for prealgebra with Derek Owens for next year. Can't vouch yet for it but it has glowing reviews!
