  1. Well thank you everyone for your kind posts/ideas. I am beginning to think she does need a more spiral approach. She is an excellent reader, way above grade level. But Math.... I went to the teacher supply store today and picked up some 1st gr workbooks. I sat her down and explained that we needed to get some things figured out before we move to mutiplication/division. She seems open to the idea. We will pull out the c-rods and really get back to basics. :001_smile:
  2. Originally posted in K-8, was suggested I cross post here... DD9 is in 3rd grade. We started schooling the first of August. She, just today, took the MM 3A ch 1 test. 2 months to go through one chapter. Out of 39 she missed 12. She + when it's -, and - when its +. Seems genuinely stumped at simple math facts- still. I beg her to use her fingers to count on, but it's almost like she forgets they're there. Ch 2 starts into multiplication, but maybe we shouldn't get into it until basic +/- is down better? She is ADHD and has been on long acting Concerta since February. She is able to focus better with this, but can still be somewhat spacey. I am not sure what to do here. Do I take her over to Sylvan Learning?, have her do daily simple math fact sheets until it's second nature? Change curriculum, if so then to what? I am at a loss. Reading and spelling she does very well in and loves history and science. Friday's we do logic puzzles instead of MM and she loves those.
  3. This is our 2nd yr HS. I am right here while she is doing her page, I will usually point out when she has added and not subtracted, etc. It has been a few weeks since we have done BA. She was losing interest, and it was confusing me, so BA is on hold. Basic math facts have always been a struggle. Xtramath causes her to meltdown, it's the timed aspect. She cannot handle the stress. I will go post this on the LC board too, good idea!

  5. right? ARGH! I am about ready to throw in the towel, get her a digital clock and forget the whole thing. Teaching time is most painful....
  6. Nothing better than A&P lab! I was the only one in my group that dared to do the cutting. We did fetal pigs. I found the whole thing fascinating..... (RN for the last 23 years... :thumbup1: )
  7. HAHA! This was me when we started up 2 weeks ago. I knew I should have kept them going a page a day on the math!
  8. Sewing on buttons? Good thing to learn and easy to start with. Maybe a simple tote bag? Two rectangles and some straps, pretty easy.
  9. I feel a Mai Tai should work if you put him on your back in a "backpack" configuration. But really, at 18 months, what about a regular old hiking type backpack carrier? Better yet, I would be happy to come along on your trip and just carry DS for you! LOL! Your trip sounds fantastic!!!!
  10. I just don't know what to say. Lots of love to you and your family as you go through this loss. I am so very sorry. :grouphug:
  11. Two summers ago, I was outside and noticed a lot of yellow jacket activity in and around the corner of the house (kitchen is on the other side of the wall). DH and I watched it for a few days and there was just nonstop YJ in and out under the siding of the house. We do a bit of internet research and found that pest control guys use Drione Dust and that you can find Drione Dust on amazon! We ordered some, IIRC it wasn't cheap but it was cheaper than a pest guy. Anyway, DH started puffing that dust all over under the siding and around the window over my kitchen sink. YJ were dropping like flies! Over the next few days, I had about a dozen dead and dying YJ on my kitchen counter under the window sill. There were areas between the drywall and the window sill underneath that didn't get caulked or whatever when they were building this place. So the YJ would crawl away from the siding to those openings. Disgusting!
  12. I have been toying with this too. Haven't used anything yet, but Handwriting WIthout Tears company has just released a new typing program that is very reasonably priced. They have a few sample lessons you can run through on their website.
  13. He was amazing in Good Will Hunting. He will be missed!
  14. RN for the last 20 years here. 18 of which has been hospital based. I have worked everywhere from Recovery to ICU to Medical patients. When I first started, charting was done on paper, now it all has to be computer based as per Obamacare. Even now, when you go to the doc, they barely look at you as they are all focused on the screen. Anyway, paper charting was so much easier. You could look at the whole days events at a glance on one side or the other. With computers there are too many screens to scroll through. Nursing is the biggest financial expenditure in a hospital so it is also a thorn in the side of administration. So they try and get away with as few RNs as they can. Patients are sicker now than they used to be, pushing sicker patients to the floors, and even to Home Health. Pain meds are usually ordered "PRN" which means As Needed. The staff will not automatically bring you the pills with this kind of order, you have to ask for it. Last Winter when DH was in the hospital after back surgery, the staff on the post op floor had recently instituted a "bedside report" protocol. Supposedly this led to greater patient satisfaction, but I sure didn't see it. For an hour to hour and a half the RN and aide were near impossible to get a hold of so poor DH would get behind on his pain meds. So that was irritating. Interestingly, it seems these days (over when I first started) there are so many more managers and assistant managers. Hospitals are extremely top heavy. (working in a University medical center)
  15. After an unsuccessful round of IVF, the doc decided to do an exploratory Lap. Low and behold he found endometriosis in there. Which was interesting because I do not have the pain like most people. So I got one shot of Lupron that put me in menopause for the next three months. I was very glad this all happened in the middle of winter LOL! Those hot flashes were crap! Anyway, I am glad I did it as at the end of the fourth month I got a surprise in the form of a positive preg test who is now my rising 3rd grader!!
  16. I believe so, but I left the LDS church in 1988 and never did go through the temple.
  17. Custer SP is great, visit Wall Drug, and also the Minuteman Missile Exhibit, now a Natl Monument. Deadwood is also fun, and Wind Cave and Jewel Caves. About Crazy Horse, yes the monument is cool, however, you can see it from the road and if you stop you are essentially paying to get in and walk around a souvenir/bookshop. If you are pressed for time, you may just want to admire it from the road. That being said, I was there in Sept 2010 so maybe it is different now?
  18. Raised LDS, now attending non-denom Christian Church. Both teach 10% tithe to the church.
  19. Probably "Economy Class Syndrome" she developes a DVT on the long flight, gets off plane, starts walking around, DVT breaks off, floats up to heart/lungs, then sudden death.
  20. We are! Everything is ready, but I'm still waiting on my SOTW vol 2. Hope it comes soon. New this year is Fine Arts Fridays. So we'll see how that goes....
  21. Did you try oneNote online? That was how I got it on my old 1st gen iPad so the kids can check off their stuff. Try Microsoft office online....
  22. We did Elemental Science- Biology last year, and are all ready to go with ES Earth Science this year. The author of the program does offer a science experiment kit that I bought to go with my program. EVERYTHING is in it! So handy! My girls (6 and 8) are really looking forward to it this year!
  23. Yes there is a Mac option. But I can't remember if you get to it through the app store but it is available.
  24. Ok I am getting the hang of this! I have an old 1st Gen ipad that has basically been sitting around dead. I am charging it up and found out I can go through OneNote Online and see all my stuff that way. So the kids can mark off their stuff on the old iPad and I took all the fun games OFF and just put EDUCATIONAL apps on there! HEEHEE! I school in 6 week chunks. Then we take a week off. So I have planned out the first 6 weeks in OneNote (with my Homeschool Helper app as backup) Along the top of the screen are the "terms". Then down the right hand side on my pages are weeks 1-6. The first week has the daily assignment checkboxes. So each girl has her folder that they can access on the old ipad to check off what they have done. Pretty nifty!
  25. I am not now, nor will I ever be, a short order cook. If you don't like the meal I make you are welcome to make your own meal.
