  1. Elemental Science does this as well. Biology for the Grammar stage. We loved it!
  2. Yes it does. She also has the option of ebooks, which is what I use. Then I just have my ipad for class instead of a bunch of books. The pics are a separate download which is nice as it looks great on my giant monitor. I haven't forced much memory work ( ) but there are options for that. Memory work and my kids = :banghead:
  3. Exactly why I switched to ELTL from FLL/WWE after our first year. I felt that so much overlap was inefficient, drove me nuts. Love ELTL- I read the literature chapter then we do the lesson. My kids are good at diagramming and love it! No way would that happen in the PS.
  4. I wish I could get the kids to write like they're running outta time.
  5. I listen to that soundtrack non stop! My summer reading is Washington by Chernow, followed by Hamilton. So far I am 2/3 thru Washington...
  6. I will have a 5th grader and a 3rd grader this fall. So far our definites are: Spelling Workouts D and F Word Roots Beg and Lvl 1 Reading Detectives Beg, and A1 SOTW v 4 Elemental Science- Physics English Lessons Through Literature v 4 Handwriting w/o Tears Cursive Keyboarding w/o Tears. TBD Geography Up in the air: Math- Currently they are both in Horizons, and while that has been fine, I find it is hard for me to teach, some areas are light on instruction. My oldest is slightly behind and my younger is actually working a grade level ahead (of her 3rd grade age). They have both tested into Saxon 5/4 and CLE 300. Trying to decide if I should switch.... Spanish vs Latin- have started Latin the last two year, lose interest in about 6 weeks. Starting to think Spanish may be the way to go and younger DD wants to be able to talk Spanish with her cousin who is in an immersion program in the PS.
  7. I really want to do Latin. I have the Getting Started With Latin book. For the last two years we have started and then stopped at about the 6 week mark (haha!) That book just wasn't working for us. I have been thinking of other programs tho. Any recs? Anyway, my girls are doing word roots and that has some Latin in it.
  8. What if you have him write your grocery list in cursive? or your to-do list? Build it up like you really need help- like your hands are really tired after cooking dinner and washing dishes? :)
  9. My 1 and 3 graders did ELTL 3 and loved it! I bought 3 when I shouldA bought 2. Anyway, they both loved diagramming sentences. I took it easy and some week only did two lessons but that year was awesome.
  10. There are also jobs like music or art therapy. Especially at children's hospitals. If you live in a town with a childrens hospital maybe arrange a visit with them? she may be able to shadow them on the job for a few hours.
  11. I haven't read that book, but what I did do last year (and will do this coming year) is get a milk crate with 36 hanging files. All work was divvied up and each file held the work for the week. Once we were finished with that week the completed work went back in the file and I put the file in the back and flipped around (so i couldnt see the number on the tab). This really worked well. I found this from someones blog, that I found while Pinteresting homeschool stuff one day.
  12. We've just finished Grammar Stage Chem from Elemental Science and we loved it! I really appreciate that she gives you the option to buy the experiment supply kit. And she has 2 day and 5 day schedules available in the manual which is helpful. The first and last chapters experiments is making ice cream in a plastic bag- how can ya beat that?!
  13. At that age my girls LOVED the Grammar Stage Biology program from Elemental Science. The nice thing about her program is that you get a two day and a 5 day schedule so you can do what fits in best in your home. Also for an additional fee, you can buy the experiment box that has all the stuff you need for your experiments. This has been a lifesaver for me! I love her programs, we will be doing Physics this fall.
  14. I got one for Christmas and I just loved it! The first recipe I made was Mac and Cheese from here Everyone flipped over it and now I always have ingredients on hand for this. http://www.hippressurecooking.com/ http://www.pressurecookingtoday.com/
  15. Apollo 13. Amazing true story, great display of problem solving and teamwork. The Right Stuff is also fun, might be better for the 12yr old than 9yr old? From the Earth to the Moon- 12hour HBO miniseries. Hugely acclaimed Moon Shot- look at the Apollo project October Sky- stars Jake Gyllenhal and is about a group of friends in a coal mining town in the 50s. They were inspired to study rocketry after Sputnik went up.
  16. At the end of 5th grade I read Gone With the Wind. My mom brought home a copy to read it herself, I absconded and was three chapters in before she figured it out. She let me keep reading. My 5th grade teacher said (at the first of May when I started it) that if I finished and gave her a synopsis before the end of school, Automatic A. Not that I needed that kind of extra credit in LA anyway. But man. I ripped through that book in three weeks! Just devoured it! It is still one of my all time favorite reads. In 6th grade my friend and I read the entire school library's collection of Nancy Drew books. Loved those!!
  17. I didn't use that program, but my K did do Elemental Science Biology with her 2nd grade sister two years ago. We all liked it so well we did Earth Science last year and this year we are doing Chemistry. I really like the way her programs are set up and the fact that she puts together the experiment kit you need for that year is wonderful!
  18. Kind of a broad question. You can find free stuff on the internet, MEP for math for example. There is the whole year's worth of curriculum mailed to you, like Sonlight. You could probably use k12. My sis HS's her two kids in Tokyo using K12. No one from Japan or the Air Force has been in her business over it either. So poke around and do a bit of reading and ask questions. I think you could just go ahead and get started. If you want to put the kids in PS in the states later on, they can help you sort out where they will need to go.
  19. My oldest DD went to PS for K and 1st. We live in the middle of SLC. NOT rural. But the poor kid spent 45 minutes on the bus am and pm. So that was the first problem. Second, the bus driver insisted my sweet little first grader sit in the back of the bus with the 5 and 6 grade kids. Apparently, driver didn't want to listen to DD laugh. Third, while rated a "good school" DD was have trouble and nobody bothered to notify me until things were bad. The whole second half of the year she was on a "behavior contract" which reinforced her feelings of inadequacy. They also did timed math tests in 1st grade. She could never advance despite trying her hardest. That also reinforced her feelings of failure and stupidity. It has taken two years for her to come out of her "I'm a failure at math" mentality. So yeah, HS has been a lifesaver for her. We had a bunch of psych help for her, she has ADHD, ODD, anxiety. HS has been just the thing she needed.
  20. Except AVOID Park City the end of January. That is Sundance Film Festival time and it gets crazy. But yes, stay in the SLC and hit all the resorts. You could do a resort a day! Happy Skiing! (a Utah native who hates snow and only went skiing once in 1987 and never went back!)
  21. I have been buying glasses off Zenni Optical.com for the last 7 years. I have been EXTREMELY satisfied. It takes about 2 weeks from the time I place my order until I get them in the mailbox from Hong Kong. They have thousands of frames, some as low at $6- If you have a basic need-glasses-for-distance prescription with no extras. S&H is $4.95 no matter how many pr you order. I am currently wearing some with progressive bifocal that cost me $30. THIRTY DOLLARS!! I asked my eye doc (who sells frames in the front office) about Zenni. He chuckled and admitted to me he had several pair and they were similar quality to what he had in the shop. With Zenni- you will need your Pupillary DIstance measured. It is a part of your Rx and some places won't put it on the Rx but it is a legal part of your Rx so they cant withold that info. THe fun thing about Zenni is that they have so many frames, even holiday styles, that you can afford to get fun frames for Halloween!
  22. I have a 2nd and 4th grader. We just started Chemistry. I use Elemental Science program. She outlines a two or a five day science plan. All of the lessons are right there, she also gives you a list of books to go from and then offers an experiment kit that has everything you need to run your experiments.
  23. We are into our third year of Elemental Science (biology/earth science/chemistry) for the Grammar stage. I really like her programs, I also get the experiment kit that is extra. It's wonderful to be able to open the book, follow the plan, and have all the experiment requirements right there....
