  1. I'm curious if anyone has used the The Bill of Rights Institute's Documents of Freedom site for hs government, and if you did, did you supplement with a textbook? I've never taught government, but it seems pretty thorough, including quizzes and discussion handouts. I don't think we'd need a text and could just supplement with documentaries, etc. https://www.docsoffreedom.org/explore
  2. Oh, and this is a great book, even if it's just so they can nod along and say, "Oh, gosh, yes, we deal with this, too": The 36-Hour Day Best wishes to your friends. This is not easy.
  3. We had the "fortune" of having my mother, with Lewy Body Dementia, fall and break her hip :( . This set up a required stay in a skilled nursing facility which became permanent for the last year of her life. By far, the most important thing we did was contact a law office that specialized in elder law. I happen to be in Michigan and can wholeheartedly recommend this firm: http://mielderlaw.com/
  4. Mine were like that within about 6 months of starting. They also lasted more than 7 days :glare: . My mom took me to the doctor after a couple months of it. The doctor said it was nothing to be concerned about, to expect over the next year that things would work themselves out, and many women simply have irregular, heavy periods. I put up with it for a couple years, but eventually they put me on BC pills for a few months to get things straightened out. That worked and I've been regular ever since. I will say that tampons made things *much* worse for me. Once I switched to a cup, my cycles decreased in length and flow and I have much less cramping. I wish I would have started using one sooner.....but I can't convince my own dd to use one either.
  5. We're in the thick of it now. We've homeschooled from the beginning, with the intention of revisiting our commitment to it each and every year. Each year our family agrees it's still working and we carry on. I don't know what next year, or two years from now, will bring, but I suspect we will homeschool until the end. Ultimately, we ended up with night owl kids, with varied interests and talents, and far more confidence than their father or I had at the same age. Late at night, dh and I marvel at the cool people they're becoming. I am loving the conversations that come from homeschooling these later years and I selfishly admit to enjoying the education *I'm* getting!
  6. Love, love, love these Beatrix Potter DVDs, along with Oswald, Little Bear, Franklin, and Kipper. We also loved Kristen's Fairy House, which my Amazon history tells me I bought when my kids were 4 and nearly 3 :001_wub: .
  7. Our dog has Addison's Disease, which is the opposite of Cushings. She produces little to no cortisol. She is 13, 3 years post diagnosis, and doing well. As I understand it, Cushings is more easily controlled than AD, so I hope that your dog does as well as ours has.
  8. The issues in Flint should be of particular concern to those that live in colder regions where rock salt is used on the roads in the winter. The salinity of the Flint River is significantly higher than that of Lake Huron (Detroit's water source). There is a salt mine 1,000 feet under the city of Detroit, so regionally, things are pretty salty. The addition of rock salt run off proved to be disastrous for Flint's aging lead pipe infrastructure. I worry we're going to be seeing more and more of it. “It’s incredible. In many northeastern cities because of road salt use, salt content in rivers has doubled in the last 20 years.†http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/jan/18/michigan-flint-river-epa-lead-contamination-mdeq-pollutants-water-safety-health
  9. Perhaps, the OP should look at other news sources. I also get the majority of my news from NPR.
  10. I understand what you're trying to say, but I disagree. I do believe this happened in Flint because its population majority is black and poor. I have been following Michigan Radio's excellent coverage since the summer of 2014. If I knew what was going on in Flint, Governor Snyder did, too. Now that mainstream media has picked up the story, I'm seeing coverage everywhere. I've seen blips of Palin, but nothing on the level of Flint. It took a while nationally, but people are definitely outraged.
  11. My mom passed from Lewy Body Dementia (at least now people know what it is, thanks to Robin Williams) in May 2013. I had seen some minor memory issues and odd behavior, but the alarm bells went crazy went she confided to me that she drove 5 minutes to town to run an errand and found herself having no idea how to get home. She snapped out of it and made it home, but that was the beginning of our journey. I don't have much to add to the excellent advice above. If this ends up being a memory disease, I'm glad you're close. My family had moved back to my home town to run our family business in 2007. Little did I know, I'd only have a few short years with a healthy mom, but I'm so glad I was here to help my dad. I had to leave more than one cart full of groceries because a cell phone call alerted me to a crisis at their house. I hope you get answers soon :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: .
  12. Nothing really. If I have a choice, I'd rather not be vacationing during the first 2 days, but I've done it plenty of times and still had a fine time. I take ibuprofen and I'm good. Yes, I am so ready to be done. My doctor checked my blood work in the fall to see if I was close to starting menopause (I'll be 46 this year). I excitedly asked for my results and received a slight chuckle and "Huh. Not even close". <_<
  13. Dan Buettner wrote a book called Blue Zones, which I checked out of the library after watching a segment on CNN. It's good stuff. He also did this TED Talk about the subject:
  14. My son is the same way and GTA has never entered this house. Dh says you can play Fallout 4 however you want; as strictly FPS or and RPG. The RPG aspect is always there. You can level up based on role playing (and not just shooting). It is a huge, open world game. They've spent, ahem, a lot of time on it ;) . It's a father/son thing here.
  15. According to my guys, they sell or toss the drugs/alcohol. It's not good for your character. Gears of War is also far more violent than Fallout 4. Just an FYI, if that's a concern.
  16. You can see the Commonsense Media review here: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/game-reviews/fallout-4# My husband and 15 yo son both play it. I enjoy the background music from Diamond City Radio when they play. Lots of Billie Holiday and 40s music :)
  17. *sigh* I'm so predictable. My son asked if Kylo Ren was going to be my new Snape. I saw some theories suggesting that Snoke's battle scars are from Luke, but how, or if, that happened, I guess we'll have to wait to see!
  18. This is exactly what we did last week. It kept me in my happy little Star Wars bubble. I'm glad we saw it early, so nothing was spoiled. My daughter was playing Minecraft last night and in the chat someone yelled HAN SOLO DIES and quit the game. :cursing:
  19. I couldn't believe how strongly I was affected by Rey. Star Wars was such a huge part of my play as a 70s-80s kid. I am thrilled for little girls that will get to play Rey! (I'm not convinced Rey is Luke's daughter. It seems too easy.)
