In case any of you will be studying the American Revolution this year, Fort Ticonderoga is having a homeschool day on Friday September 6th. The Fort is located in upstate New York on Lake Champlain across from northern Vermont. It's just over a 2 hour drive north of Albany, NY. They have an entire day devoted to homeschoolers, with tours, demonstrations, etc. More info here: http://www.fortticonderoga.org/learn/students/homeschool We'll be attending. My son's 4th grade history curriculum will be The American Revolution. I've gathered LOTS of resources for us on my pinterest board. Check it out here: http://pinterest.com/carennh/american-revolution/. We're lucky enough to live in New England, so I figured this was the perfect area to begin our homeschooling history study. TONS of opportunities for field trips etc. For example, we'll be heading up to Fort Ticonderoga in upstate New York for their homeschooler day the first weekend of September. Then the "Fort at #4" in New Hampshire has an entire weekend in October devoted to the Revolutionary War, General John Stark (he's the one who said Live Free or Die), mustering the troops etc. We'll also visit Concord and Lexington, Bunker Hill, The Boston Tea Part Museum, and lots of other places.

Some books by 9 yr old (just finished 3rd grade) likes: Diary of a Wimpy Kid Star Wars Origami series http://origamiyoda.wordpress.com/ The Wizard of Oz Lemonade Wars series Lunch Lady series Charlie and the Chocolate Factory We'e started reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder books together. He is loving Little House in the Big Woods and can't wait until we get to the next book, Farmer Boy, so he can learn about Almonzo's early life. I'm considering introducing him to Ender's Game, but I'm not sure he's quite ready for it. Any thoughts?

I've enjoyed many of Barbara Wood's historical fiction novels, including Soul Flame, which is set in Roman times. Here's the amazon link. (Hope I did it right.)

Homeschooling In The Woods' Time Travelers History series are very nice. They include lessons, projects, activities, etc. We'll be using the one on the American Revolution next year.

I'm planning to study the American Revolution with my 4th grader next year and I've been gathering a ton of web links, resources, etc. Anyone know how to pull out a list of bookmarks in Chrome to enter here?

It's not a full-on language instruction program, but the podcast Coffee Break French is fun to listen to and gives an excellent overview of basic conversational French. It's geared primarily toward English speakers planning to travel to French speaking countries as tourists, but it might be a gentle place to start. And it's in 15 minute increments.
