  1. Hi, There is a sale tomorrow at Mardels and everything is 20% off. I am looking at these two for history studies. Can someone give me opinions? Thanks, Penny
  2. Hi, I have been looking at this for science and possibly history. I think I could use this as my base program and add library books for digging deeper into the topics. I don't see very many posts on this curriculum that are recent.(Most are from over 2-3 years ago and I have read that the material has been revised) Anyone use this? I would love to get opinions on it. It seems to really get the children thinking. Thanks so much for any opinion be it good or bad. Penny
  3. When reading about the curriculum on the website, it says that each unit contains science experiments. I just need to know if I need a separate science curriculum. Penny
  4. Do you find the science portion enough for 4th grade? I am just trying to see how complete it is. Penny
  5. I have just looked at samples of their elementary curriculum and like what I see. I would like to use the History 1 while also learning US Geography. I have searched through past threads and have only found limited information. My dd would not be using this independently. I would love to read reviews on this. I know that the CTT website has reviews but I would prefer to get reviews from the hive. Thanks so much, Penny
  6. Would it work well to have the TM's on my nook? I have read that people find that printing can be overwhelming. I have the refillable CISS cartridges for my inkjet printer which lasts a very long time and also have a laser printer. Thanks, Penny
  7. I was thinking of starting off with New World Explorers and just working our way through them all. Penny
  8. Hi, I am looking for something fun to use with my oldest that contains history and geography coverage. I had originally planned to use Road Trip USA with her but noticed HITW units. They look really fun. My plans for either one would be to put the teachers items on my nook and print out only the student pages. I can't make up my mind. HITW looks to be more in depth. Our coverage of geography has been unorganized. We used all FIAR volumes in the past, completed a few Konos units, and went through about 1/2 of SOTW 1. I would like to be more consistant in our coverage of both history and geography. I would also like for her to know the states and capitals. HITW looks nice as it would also cover science.(not sure how deeply) Recommendations? Penny
  9. I tried using Sotw with my dd twice and ended up putting it away both times. She would constantly beg me stick with ancient egypt. She loved it so much. I ended up getting tons of library books and let her have her fill. I read and she would narrate. If the child is interested in the material they will retain so much. I didn't learn any history until around 7th or 8th grade so she already knows more history than I knew at her age. Penny
  10. http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/u-s-geography I would like to cover U.S. Geography and have my dd learn the states and capitals. I am trying to decide on on this or using Elemental History and expand on it to cover states and capitals. Anyone use this? Recommendations??? Penny
  11. Well...I ordered grade 3 just now and immediately after I noticed a review indicating that lots of math errors were found in the grade 5 set. Have any of you noticed any errors? Penny
  12. I think that I will go ahead and order the level 3 materials without the TM and try it. I have heard that it is more gentle than SM which is really what I am looking for. Thanks, Penny
  13. Hi, I called RR today. The person that I spoke to indicated that the TM's have the meat of the program and my dd would only get about 1/2 of the benefit if I chose to only get the text and wb. She suggested that I use Singapore Math Standards with the HIG....that is what I currently use.:tongue_smilie: My dd loathes math and I can't take the meltdowns anymore so I thought to finish our current level of SM and then try and see if MIF might work better for her. Today's math meltdown made me want to pull out my own hair! I am at the point where I just may throw in the towel. She just wants to plug in the numbers and borrow. I feel like I am fighting a losing battle. I need to try a different approach but...I just hate to make another expensive mistake. Does MIF take a slower and more guided approach? Penny
  14. I like the look of the samples very much. I think I just might switch.
  15. Hi, Thanks for the reply. How would you compare MIF to SM or MM? I like conceptual or mental math but SM is a bit to difficult for my oldest dd. She also has retention problems and totally hates math. Penny
  16. Hi, I am considering a change from SM to MIF. We are just about to complete our current level and since I will need to order materials anyway.... I have read that most people use it without the TM but I wanted to be sure that I am not making a mistake. Do you find the TM needed at level 3? I find the HIG with SM to be needed to round off the material but SM is producing tears and frustration. I have heard the MIF is better for kids like this. Thanks for the help, Penny
  17. Hi, I normally keep all of my important stuff like curriculum on a flash drive so I have not needed to back up my entire machine in a long time but..if I remember corectly when you ran your backup utility it should have given you a message saying something like backup successful or backup complete.(which should indicate that all went well with the back up. )Something like dropbox is a nice way to keep your files safe and easily accessable. I know your pain. I remember my nerves being shot hoping my files would all be intact after dealing with viruses. It is sad that people create viruses to spread problems. I hope you don't lose anything important in this. Penny
  18. Combofix only removes the infection so it will not restore your computer. Now that the virus is gone you can put important documents or pics on a flash drive. When you reinstall windows it will totally wipe your machine and you will start fresh. Now some pc makers send you a restore cd or you have a restoration file that will restore your computer to the state it was in when you purchased it. Otherwise you can use your windows cd. Penny
  19. If you need a new computer then you certainly would have less trouble with a mac. If your computer is not old(hardware is still good) I would say try Ubuntu Linux http://www.ubuntu.com or maybe Linux Mint. http://Www.linuxmint.com Both are free and there are so many more linux distributions to choose from that I could not possibly name them all. I started out with Ubuntu and have been using Debian Linux for several years now and have no trouble at all with viruses. Mac operating system was made from linux and either one is safer than windows imho. Obviously, a mac is more expensive as linux if free and there is a learning curve...I love using linux. You can download and burn a live cd and try it out without having to install it. Or...buy a mac.:001_smile: Windows viruses are made executable just like windows programs.(.exe) Linux and macs do not run exe files which is why these viruses don't infect those users. I am not a fan of windows after having spent lots of money on antivirus software and still getting viruses. When you reinstall windows(if you choose to use windows) have your disks for any software you need available.(like microsoft word and such) It is better to have a clean system that to use a backup that may be infected. Hth, Penny
  20. I got rid of cable and have a Roku in my living room. I have a Roku plugin called Playon that gives me way more content than the normal Roku plugins. Playon will play content to the Roku, Nook Tablet,(anything that has web access) and even my phone. I also have xbmc installed on my bedroom computer which is connected to a flat panel tv. Both are nice. I do however, get more content on xbmc through plugins that can be downloaded from the net. XBMC plays commercial free.(yipee) I will never get cable ever again! Penny
  21. Just be careful that you don't backup the virus along with your important stuff or you will just be reinfecting your machine when you restore the files. That is why I run combofix before I backup files. Penny
  22. This is what I use. However, if you have a rootkit it may reinfect your machine. I still recommend that you reinstall windows. If you have more than one virus you likely have a rootkit. I had this problem in the past before I moved to linux. The rootkit's job was to constantly load viruses onto my computer. I had one virus after another. Quickest solution was to use combofix(when you save combofix file on your machine you need to rename the file cause some rootkits will detect the name combofix and render the file useless before you even open the file) and then quickly get your important stuff off of the machine and reinstall windows. Or...you could install linux if you are feeling adventurous. :D Penny
