  2. Hello All, My dd will be starting second grade this year. I would like to add geography/map skills to our subject list. Currently, we look up places together as we read about different areas. I am not familiar with the various programs. What are your suggestions? Thanks.
  3. Thank you for all of the suggestions. I'l be looking at the various programs.
  4. Hello All, I need some advice. I am finishing up 1st grade math using two programs, RightStart B and Math-U-See Alpha. We will continue with RightStart C for second grade. I am needing help picking a second math program. I like the practice that MUS gives, but the concepts are a little too easy for my child. MUS Beta is double digit addition and subtraction. It seems like we will have already covered much of the material from RightStart B. My question is this. Should I continue with MUS Beta for the extra practice, or should I use another program? I would like the other program to have some kind of problem work involvement. Do you have any program suggestions? I would eventually like to transition to the Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) curriculum for middle school. Ideally, I would like the second program to help bridge any gaps left by RightStart so that the transition to AOPS is smooth. Thanks.
  5. I have both the Flyleaf books and the MCP books. I use the OPGTR book as well as MCP phonics and Explode the Code phonics. I have a very hard time lining up phonics readers with what we are learning. Most of the early readers out there use many sight words and are not phonics controlled. That being said, the MCP phonics readers are controlled for phonics. We use them. The Flyleaf stories are way more interesting, but do have quite a few sight words. If we have not covered the phonics rule for a particular word and my daughter cannot read that word, I say the word and we move on. She feels accomplished for reading the book. I use this approach for other readers. I have found that by doing this my daughter can usually say the word within a time or two of seeing the word. Both sets are pricey. Being behind is all relative. We complete our scheduled lessons slowing down as needed, but never stopping. I hope this helps.
  6. Have you considered using a planner? I found an online planner called Homeschool Planet at the homeschoolbuyersco-op.org website. It is easy to use and you can plan for every person in your household. You can set up a schedule for every class as well as schedule all of your household duties with times as needed. You can plan a whole year or more if you want to. If you need to move a class, it is easily done with a click of the mouse. You can view it online or print out a schedule for the day. I like it because I can see how my curriculum fits within the school year. It gives me peace of mind to know that there is a time for everything that I want to accomplish in my homeschool. It helps to keep structure in my family. For me, this has translated to a better year for my family. I hope this helps.
  7. In my opinion, the religious aspect of Sonlight comes from the IG. Sonlight presents science from a Young Earth Creationist point of view.
  8. We are currently using Nancy Larson science grade 1. My 6 year old enjoys it. The kit comes with everything you will need except for common household items. I have not needed to run out to the store to gather items for either the the K or 1st grade level. The lessons are scripted. There is a review sheet at the end of each lesson. Writing is required for each lesson. Each lesson takes less than 30 minutes to complete. The lessons are designed to be completed at the rate of about 2 per week. I have found the customer service to be helpful and friendly. We also use the science from Sonlight. While my child likes Sonlight science, she appears more eager to do the Nancy Larson program. She has better recall of concepts taught with the NL program. We complete 2 NL lessons per week and then do a 5 day Sonlight science for the other 3. It seems to be working so far. I hope this helps.
