You're welcome Jennefer

I believe so. The website is rather confusing. We started the 2nd grade workbook when my dd was in 3rd grade. She'll be doing the 4th grade workbook this school year (starting tomorrow). ETA: Scroll down to the "Workbooks for Grades 2 to 11" section. The .doc files are complete for the grade. The workbooks are open-and-go and very easy to use.

You are NOT going to BELIEVE this!
Hannah replied to Heather in Neverland's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Awesome! Congratulations. -
You don't have to do a timeline for SOTW1. Many people don't until their children are older and have a better understanding of the flow of time. If you'd like to, you can get timeline pictures for SOTW1, 2 & 3 at the files section of this yahoo group. We put them on the wall, but you could use them in a book as well. The review cards can also be used successfully in a timeline book.

What is up with this crazy weather?
Hannah replied to tdeveson's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The weather here in Melbourne has just dropped 12 oC in half an hour. A strong wind started blowing and then there was a downpoar. The kids were playing outside in the rain. I'm sure the locals are used to it, but I find these abrupt weather changes incredible! -
What is up with this crazy weather?
Hannah replied to tdeveson's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It was very uncomfortable here last night! There are different climate zones in South Africa which depend on altitude and proximity to the ocean currents of the area. The climate ranges from Mediterranean in the Western Cape (South West of the country) to tropical in the East (KwaZulu Natal area) and a small dessert area in the North West. There are hot-and-dry and hot-and-humid areas, but I've not lived in them and have been lucky with maximum temps during visits in the summer months. Some areas can get uncomfortably hot too. I've lived in the Western Cape area which has wet winters and dry summers, and Gauteng (around Johannesburg) with dry winters and summer rains which mostly falls in late afternoon thunderstorms. Both areas have max summer temps of 35 oC, but the average is mid-20's oC. -

Melbourne weather is something else. I couldn't believe the heat last night. I honestly don't think I have experienced anything like it before! We walked the 1.5 km (close on a mile) from the train station at 5.30pm yesterday afternoon and it was like walking in an oven with the fan on. At 10pm it was still close on 40 °C (~104 °F)! The forecast said it will get better today... Our friends' house also does not have aircon and they're considering it as well. We're leaving tomorrow and its raining at home. We are having an unusally wet summer with very heavy rains. -
I am in South Africa and we have multi-zone DVD player, so are able to play DVD's from the States. For younger kids try: * Magic School Bus series (more for your K-er end 2nd grader) * The way things work For older kids look at National Geographic DVD's

Timeline: to make your own or buy one, what say you?
Hannah replied to mama25angels's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
You can find the figures and template of a wall timeline we use for free at the files section of this Yahoo group. The pictures are for SOTW1, 2 and 3. If your kids like drawing, you could precut paper to the correct timeline size and have them do their own. -
Oh, you just made my day! :blushing: Thank you.

Its Christmas here.....Merry Christmas
Hannah replied to Peela's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Merry Christmas from South Africa! We're getting ready for lunch. There's a power outage, so the turkey is being cooked in the Weber. We've just Skyped with friends in Melbourne and their kids are off to bed. -

Dd completed the grade 2 and 3 workbooks while she was in grades 3 and 4 and it is working well. I think the grade 2 book in grade 2 would have been too challenging for her.

Not sure what you're looking for, but there are worksheets, timeline pics and more for SOTW 1 to 3 at the file section of this Yahoo group.

Do you really need the TWSS with IEW?
Hannah replied to NoPlaceLikeHome's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
As a matter of interest, the South African agents for IEW sell only the SWI plus the continuations. One would assume that this was discussed with Mr Pudewa and he has agreed that it is enough. The agent supplies various homeschool curriculum and strives to make it cost effective given exchange rates and the value of our currency, so this would have been the reasoning behind providing only a part of the program. The other IEW products they carry are the Poetry Memorization and Spelling. -
entertaining kids on long layovers
Hannah replied to workingmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Good tips from everyone! Oh no! We've got just under 4 hours for our lay-over in Sydney next week! We're connecting to Melbourne. I hope we make it. Coming back its 2h20 in Perth. -
You can find pictures for SOTW3 (and 1&2) at the files section of this yahoo group.

This sounds like a great idea! Maybe your calender could include the date, time and type of activity (game night, movie night, baking night, etc) for a few weeks ahead (or the whole year if you want), so that everyone knows what to expect on the day. If specific preparation or ingredients are needed, these can go on the calender too. If your family enjoys baking, I'd definitely include this as an option. Other ideas are family crafts, bowling night, ice-skating night and night-time picnic.

where to place timeline figures?
Hannah replied to helena's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Anywhere in between birth and death where it fits on our timeline. We have a wall timeline and from 1300 onwards it gets full. I've spread out the cards so they all fit into the period, but this means that the cards can be anywhere in the person's lifetime. For earlier periods I tried to put them at a major event. You can see a picture of and get templates for our timeline and cards at the file section of this yahoo group.
