  1. My daughter's schedule this year was a tad hectic if some of you remember and I am trying to curb that a bit. However we are struggling with where to keep things lighter. We read and discuss a lot. We do take field trips when we can but this will be my first year at full time work again so it will be a bit more difficult. We completed art and music this year so except for reading about it and for fun, or to go along with an assignment we are not worrying about that. Am I missing anything or adding in too much again? This is also fairly loosely planned as sometimes we jump off the deep end into a subject for a specific time period. Right now we have: Geometry 1 credit Spectrum Chemistry 1 credit Lukeion Latin 2 1 credit German with Rolling Acres 1 credit Muse on the Loose for ( fall semester) with Lukeion (Greek) with English Credit English 1 credit Lit with English Credit HOTAW Ancients 1 credit A & P 1/2 credit ( fall semester) Botany 1/2 credit (spring semester) Car care 1/2 credit (spring semester) Karate Exercising Dog 4H Dog Training/Stewarding/Dog Club
  2. Has anyone made a schedule for this yet or found one? I am looking to use this as our main History book for next year and could not find a schedule for it. Having difficulty finding one in the searches. Thanks!
  3. PA Homeschoolers are normally not at CHAP. I am always so sad about that :(
  4. Thanks for that info. Yes, as we finished looking through the samples of Spectrum's info that was our conclusion as well. Good to know though!
  5. My daughter looked at all of the samples that we could for these courses and she feels that Spectrum might be it. So we believe we will try that one for next year!
  6. My daughter has now made a slight change and would like to do chemistry instead of physics next year now. So, we are evaluating some different courses. What I am looking for is an open and close book. For labs we decided to follow the Illustrated chem labs. So looking for opinions on families who have used Chang's : does this have a teachers guide that is easy to find and get my hands on? Spectrum : It appears to be thorough with a usable teacher guide but is it? I thought Conceptual but it seems almost too easy??? Any thoughts of assistance for me. I have read through all of the chemistry link and often but now need some extra detail if possible. My daughter has potential plans to go into a STEM field. Thanks!
  7. My daughter LOVES/ADORES whatever other glowing adjective you would like to put in there Lukeion Latin. However this will be her first other course through Lukeion. Well, she is signed up for some short summer courses through Lukeion as well but she is very excited so I am pleased.

  9. I believe I confused a few so here is an example of my daughters time on a daily basis. I "feel" she is doing too much. Since we cannot cut out any of the classes in their entirety I was looking to drop what I feel is an extra component. She is not in the car enough to listen to audios and cannot at home anymore. She has no trouble reading and retaining the information but is spending AND needing 9 hours to complete everything and then sometimes it is still not enough. She works 6 days a week and sometimes on Sat. as well to make up something. She is a hard worker with a strong understanding of her work. She is not having difficulty but I want her to enjoy her life as a teenager and not just work all of the time. I believe Renaissance Mom got it and is telling me the info I was hoping for :) Her reading the class texts is not counted as part of her lit at all but her 2 separate lit courses and reading separate works for history and her electives is: English -R & S -LLFTLOTR -Lit list now from these she will do white ups, papers, essays, poetry or speeches. Sometimes powerpoints, brochures, etc Math -Jacobs Algebra Science -Miller/Levine Bio + labs and write ups from labs, vocab lists and creative writing with the vocab lists. sometimes pp, brochures, etc History -American History write ups, reports, speeches, etc. -Lit reading from the time period. Poetry, Great works, etc Gov. -American Gov. mainly essays and speeches. reading of documents Latin -Lukeion -reading about roman history outside of class for studying for NLE Art -Fine Arts Music -History of Archeology Class -elective online and personal reading from the textbook. outside camp over the summer Equine studies/Animal Husbandry/Nutrition and Physiology Course -elective online and reading college level texts, testing, papers, brochures, pp ,etc from me Excavating English and reading about history of languages Karate(speeches) Dog training(reports & speeches) 4-H (reports, book work and speeches)
  10. As of right now I believe we are overdoing our English. My daughter is 14 years old. Doing ~ 9th grade work In her English we are working on Rod and Staff, Literary Lessons for the Lord of the Rings and the extras with it, a separate Lit reading list with written/oral reports and discussions to go along with books and to cover the speech section of our English grade. Our main issues stem from "I believe" the fact that we all enjoy reading. So she is doing reading in History, English, her Electives(which right now is 3) and Latin. It just seems like I am despise saying this....too much reading :( Is there an avenue where I can lighten the load of reading mainly in the writing of the transcripts? Will covering reading in history be enough for lit to go along with the LLFTLOTR? Thanks all, looking for any ideas here! Am I missing something here or overdoing it?
  11. Just as a side note here. Veterinary Technology is much different than Veterinary Assistant. In Canada or the US you must be licensed/registered or certified in almost all places to work as a Veterinary Technician, legally performing the tasks allowed to us by law. Veterinary Assistants legally are allowed to do much, much less. There is high math and science requirements in the field of veterinary technology. Most Vet Technology degrees are a minimum of 2 years sometimes 3 if a student cannot keep up, then state boards or Canadian boards. You can also get a Bachelors @ some schools but most Vet Techs will go on for higher learning as specialists. Normally if you pass your specialty boards it does not increase pay but makes us happy as many who stay in this field really do it for the love of the work. We are also paid very poorly in the field with a low rate of benefits. Most benefits will range in the area of scrub allowances, ce coverage(if we are lucky) and a small animal discount. Long hours with an unflexible schedule. A high rate of burn out. I am a LVT/CVT who also teaches Veterinary Technology @ a college and still works in practice and homeschools.
  12. Sorry, have not updated my child info. my daughter is 14 years old now. She is only having to put in ~ 1.5 hours - 2 hours per week right now for it. The video lectures take ~ 1 hour and reading through some of the text is extra helpful but has not really been needed yet. The instructor has a great Scottish accent so some of her pronunciations were a bit tricky but my daughter figured it out without me. Really, I think it is a very good quality course! However, I will be adding into the course when it is done to create a full elective course. I think it is well done and a great intro class. and I teach Equine nutrition. I actually recommended the course to my students who want more info on Equine nutrition. My class is many different species of animals. So some of my college students are using this course now and enjoying it as well!
  13. My daughter is taking the Equine Nutrition Intro course. She is enjoying it and having no troubles so far.
  14. I really enjoyed this one, http://www.amazon.com/Peter-Great-His-Life-World/dp/0345298063 It is long however it is an easy read and their are historical photos as well.
  15. However I registered to view the price and it is $45.00! That is too much for me. The preview looked good though.
  16. No but looks interesting, keeping my ears open.
  17. We took the one we hosted to a obedience dog show, to the vet clinic where I work and had the doctor give the Flat Dog an exam(got that picture). and dog training class. We hosted a flat food meal. Hiking in the woods, mushroom hunting and to karate. Those were just some of the things that we did.
