  1. It looks like very common. My brother 's older son also has same problem but gets improved when adding iron drop. My Chinese coworker's sons both are anemic but older one out grow of it now (he is higher school senior). My son's school has been doing a good job promoting healthy life style. They have walking club during recess twice a week and now offer children yoga as well. He also goes swimming once a week but it is indoor pool though. My son same is sensitive to sound as well. He feels extra exhausted after staying in noisy place for a while. Last time when we went to circus, he first was excited but wanted to leave after first half of program because the music is too loud. I just spoke to DH and he is unhappy about me getting a out-of-network doctor. It's not like we cannot afford it. He just does not know how hard I tried to find a trusty pys/neuropys. Most of our network doctors are in medical center or local hospital so the wait time is long.
  2. Yes, my son has anemia but not because of iron. His red blood cell is slightly smaller (68/72). We followed up with blood test since he was 1yo. Even add iron supply, the lab number was still unchanged. And it's not genetic. Both my husband and I do not have anemia. He is tested low on Vit D though. I just recently started to add the Vit D supply for him.
  3. That may be something we can consider but I do not think she has time to work with him four days a week because she still works (school admin job) in summer. Our tutor is mainly working on his overal literacy skills. She works on phonics review in O-G, and how to decode longer words in first 30 minutes. Then they will do guided reading for various types of readers (fiction, non-fiction) in next 30 minutes. She will ask him to read, predict, retell, wriite the question, take notes, write complete answer to questions, summarize etc. I will work with him for the rest of fours days during the week. We use Dancing Bears and I SEE SAM. One page of decoding page from DB and one story from I SEE SAM AR3 set (set 6) per day.
  4. Thanks. Do you mind to share what they actually found at the end for your 8yo? My son does not have hyper behavor, but mainly inattentiveness. He actually gets tired easily than his peers. When he is tired, he cannot focus at all. My son's social skill therapist has recommanded one doctor who is pediatrician and pediatric neurologist. She used her for one of her ADHD sons. School pyschologist will also observe him at next school year to determine if he needs full evaluation. I am not sure if he will do the ADD evaluation for him before that.
  5. Our insurance does not need referral for specialist. For out of network neuropys, we have 70% coverage. For the best outcome, full NP evaluation will be the most ideal, correct? Does it need to involve with teacher or school for the interview? I am afraid if I go for it privately, then they will delay the child study team interview in September. I am also afraid of mislebal as well. Normally ped or pys will base on interview or questionnaire to rule out ADD/ADHD. What if he has something else like wapiti mentioned above?
  6. As i spoke to teacher this morning, school wants us to speak to pediatrician to rule out any medical issue like ADD/ADHD or allergy. Then school child study team will perform the full neuropyschological test if no ADD is found. Should i go private route for neuropys test8ng during summer before school starts? It will be out of network cost.
  7. Our ped is currently on leave till next week. Last time as I spoke to her, we mentioned the inattentiveness to her and she said observe for another year in 2nd grade and go for evaluation if it does not improve. It does not sound like she will do the diagnose. Does pediatrician do the evaluation as well? or should I go for psychiatrist?
  8. I just had a meeting with DS's 2nd grade teacher to discuss some concern for next school year. DS has been inattentive since he started school. Some teacher handles better than the other but the issue does not go away with his age. Teacher mentioned that he has lots of internal distriction than external. His mind goes off when he is reading. He does pretending play by himself in his mind. It happens at home as well. When I ask him to brush his teeth, he will still plays in my room for his pokemon battle (in his mind) by himself after 10 minutes. Teacher has tried several stretegies to try bring up his attention in class. When he is focus, he learns it really well. However, once she goes away to work with other students, his mind goes off again. He also has hard time to complete the task/test without reminder or redirection. He gets anxiety when he gets wrong or the last one to finish the works. We believe it's time to seek for further evaluation. Teacher suggested we can talk to pediatrcian to see if it's medical condition (ADD, allergy or something else). If it's medical condition, we will have to seek for therapy or medical treatment. If it's not a medical issue, then child study team in school will conduct full evaluation to determine his strength and learning style so they can come up with recommandation and plan for school setting. The child study team will start to observe him next schol year. I am wondering if I should take him for evaluation before that. Should i go to pediatricain, pyscholoist, pediatric neuroologist or pyschiatrist to determine if it's a medical condition? I have requested the pyschological testing at local children hospital but the wait time is 6 months+. I also email one of the neuropyschological clinic and they will do full evaluation for $3000. They do not accept insurance and I will have to claim as out of network benefits. Please point me a direction to start with. Thanks.
  9. We already have a private reading tutor (private school reading specialist, O-G trained) coming once a week since last July. I will check with her if we need to increase the frequency during summer. I just had a meeting with his teacher this morning. The school has requested the child study team to observe him and we will be called for a meeting in September to discuss if he needs to go through the full evaluation. My son will be placed into the class with additional teacher assigned in third grade (regular class, not a special ed program). Meaning his 3rd grade class will have two teachers, one helper and room mom(s) if nedded. He will continue receiving reading and writing support. Our school is doing all of those without diagnose/504/IEP and very proactive. So far I am very satisfied with our district.
  10. After talking to some friends and browsing around here, it seems our district is really doing a great job. They can provide such amount of support for a child who does not have any diagnose. I think my husband is just anxious for his reading and writing. Even though he is progressing with support, he is still not fully on grade level yet. But i don't think he is too far behind either. We will need to observe more before jumping to the idea for private school. The private school here costs around 30k per year.
  11. Thanks. Your choice is definitely wise. My son's reading pullout is also using Wilson Reading Foundation which I am very pleased with.
  12. Do you mind to share what your major reason to send DS to private school is?
  13. Yes, both his hearing and vision are checked. COVD found farsightedness on one eye last September and he is wearing reading glasses now. I spoke to his social skills therapist and she suggested to check his expressive language. He speaks very fluently in English and has tons of vocabularies. It seems that he hears things all right and can comprehend it as well. However, it takes longer time for him to retrieve the words/idea that he has or forget what he wants to say when waiting for his turn to talk. It may be ok when he is in 1st or 2nd. Once the academic pace increases in 3rd and up, he may get frustrated when losing the chance to participate (he loves to talk and participate the class discussion). He received ESL in K and 1st. Distrct decided to drop it this year because he is tested at the native speaker level for listening and speaking and pulling out for ESL will also distract his regular class routine as well so they do not see great benefits to continue ESL for him. After dropping ESL, school offers him reading and writing support instead. Here is some things we observed in his language progress: K -> teacher mentioned his had problem with rhyming words and only has few sight words has confusion with pronoun and tense orally requested ESL 1st -> ok with rhyming OK with pronoun and verb tense orally had issue to apply phonics rules to reading but no issue when reading word list can spell a word but not recognize when it shows in reading catch up with sight words starts reading pullout in March and starts AAR2 at home NOTE: head teacher took 3 months sick leave at the end of 1st half and he stayed at the same level for 4 months till she was back Summer -> I hired tutor to work with his reading once a week and I started Dancing Bears Fast Track at home 2nd Grade beginning-> tested above average for sight words (about 3rd grade level) and nonsense words in DIBELS tested below average for fluency and story recall school reading level is tested at mid 1st grade while our tutor tested him at late 1st grade level comprehension is on level while decong effectiveness and fluency is not Per teacher's comments, writing is close to 2nd grade level (we work on journaling and writing framework in summer) 2nd Grade second half -> reading level is tested at beginning of 2nd grade level at school while our tutor tested him at mid 2nd grade level doing well on weekly spelling test (6 sentences dictation every week with high frequency words) still has challenge to put down the idea to writing independently show anxiety for his performance (if he did not do well on test or seat works are incompleted)
  14. For a kid that learns at slower pace and requires more individual attention (hand holding) in learning, which school will fit better while homescholling is not an option at this moment? We live in top school district in NJ and our son is at 2nd grade. School is very supportive so far. Class size is 18 children with one head teacher, one helper and two room moms. While my son is behind in reading and writing from 1st grade, he gets extra pullout support for reading 5 days a week (30 minutes each) with reading specialist and two days (30 minutes each) for writing instrution with small group tutoring. He has minor attention issue (can focus but need redirection and reminder to move on). He does not have behvaior issue (not hyperactive) and doing well in social skills. He seems learning at the slower pace than his peers in language area and requires many repition in order to CLICK. I am not sure it is due to his bilingual background or something else. We are seeking for evaluation to clearify soon. However, in the past year, he was progressing steadily with current support he received in school even though he has not yet fully catched up to grade level yet. He handles math fairly well and does not require too much effort to keep up. He loves science and history and self learning from educational DVD or Brainpop. One day DH is coming up with the idea of sending him to private school if he still has hard time to catch up reading and writing in public school setting. He heard from his coworker that even top public schools sometimes do not serve children well. His coworker's younger brother was an example. While he was enrolled in top distrct in NY for 1st grade, teacher complant about him all the time and suspect him having learning disbilities. However, when DH's coworker tutored her brother, she found he was bright but just needed more attention to learn and keep up. Therefore, she suggested their parents to transfer her younger brother to private shcool for the rest of 1st grade. Suprisingly, her brother not only catched up but also got advanced in 6 months. DH is so tempting when he heard it. He thinks DS is bright while he also needs more attention in learning because he is distractful and have challenge to stay focus for long enough to complete class assignments in one sitting. His current teacher needs to modify his works to small chunks to keep him moving on. If he goes to private school, he thinks the teacher can be more on top of his learning progress and he may perform better. I asked my son's reading tutor who is also a private school literacy coach. She only says that one thing I have to consider is that he will get more support in public school than private school because of funding. In her school, children who have reading issue can only see her once a week even she really wants to see them more. The average class size in private school is around 15 which is not much different from what we have now in public school so she does not think private school will fit my son better in terms of individual attention aspect. Any comments?
  15. That's what I thought, too. That's why I do not dare just randomly picking up one from the netwrok list. My neighbor who is special ed teacher has recommanded the children specialized hospital which we are in the network but has long wait list. The individual NP that is out of network is board certified. Maybe I should give them a call to find out how much they will charge. If the number is too high, I may have to wait for the one in network or go through school district.
  16. Thanks. Got it. My son is currently going to social skills group which is also out of network. I just only need to submit the receipt via online and we got the 70% reimebursement of whatever we paid ($65 per session in this case) after we fullfill $300 dedutible for his personal annual expense. I thought it will be the same way... so should it be better that I wait for appointment for doc in the network? **********************This is what's in the policy****************** Services received on an outpatient basis in a provider’s office or at an Alternate Facility: 70% of eligible expenses after satisfying $300 deductible. In addition, you must notify the Mental Health/Substance Use Disorder Administrator before the following services are received. ◠intensive outpatient program treatment; ◠outpatient electro- convulsive treatment; ◠psychological testing; ◠extended outpatient treatment visits beyond 45-50 minutes in duration, with or without medication management. *********************************************************************************** In process of searching network doctor, I saw few of the pyschologist or EDD also claim they do NP EV, but they are not listed in the link you provided above (board certifified). Does that mean they are not qualified to perform the test?
  17. May I ask how much the neuro-pys evulation will normally cost? We do have good insurance plan but the board certified NPs in the network are mostly belonging to local hospital or medical group. I have to schedule through the hospital or group. I called them to request appointment but the wait time is 6 months+. I do find some individual NP will do the full evulation as out of network and then I can submit reimbursment by myself. We have met out of network deductible this year, so we should get cover by 70% if we go this route. Another option is going through school for evaluation but not sure what evaluation school will provide and how fast. Any suggestion?
  18. I don't think it's normal. My son's classroom has everyone's birthday line up on the calendar chart so they can celebrate when it comes. My son not only knows his own birthday, he knows grandma`s, daddy's, mommy's and some of his good friends` birthday as well. However, at this age they do feel so cool to be older in the class though.
  19. I think I know what you are talking about. We have the same thing running here as well. I considered to send my son last summer when he was detected behind in reading progress. I asked around my friends for feedbacks of the program. Some of my friends have good review and some do not. I finally decided to against it due to class size. My son was in need of intensive help last year so I went with tutoring instead. If your kid is fairly on level for reading, it does not hurt to try. Even with the advance one, you can go with 4th grader problem instead of 3rd grade program to better match up her need.
  20. I am going to try Rewards Intermediate in summer for my rising 2rd grader as well. Now he is starting to decode some long words but I like to get him structured lesson as well. Hopefully we can bring up his reading level more.
  21. We are going to try REWARD intermediate this summer.
  22. Look at the sample for purple and I like it especially it has picture to explain each word. We are using wordly wise 3000 book 2 now and may switch to VW in summer. The words in VW seem a bit easier than WW?
  23. I am thinking to do some logic workbooks with Singapore math intensive pack that we dont get to do during school year. I used to buy those summer bridge workbook from the store and it seems too easy.
  24. it's traditional Chinese with zhuyin. It's from Taiwan. That's what I was reading when I was kid. Very good materials. The schools in Taiwan and parents today still subcribe it to improve their students/children's Chinese reading and writing abilities. As far as I know, it does not mail to US.
  25. I kind of like it actually. We also have Dreambox but it does not cover all units for the grade level. In addition, you need practice/drills to make math concept permanent. IXL is good for my son as it only shows one question at the time so he won't get frustrated with whole page of questions. We do the 20 free questions for now. He can easily finish 20 questions in 5-10 minutes and is suprised that he is done for the day. It's boring, but some kids just need that repetition. I think the daily 2-page math homework is not enough for mastery. We use kumon workbooks for extra drills this year. I may consider to subcribe IXL for 3rd grade as he will start to prepare for PARCC. I hope they can let kids use it in aftercare.
