  1. Title says it all. My son wants to learn more about animals and our library doesn’t have much. But we’re secular homeschoolers. How much black sharpie would I have to use?
  2. I agree! The audiobook is excellent and Jason Reynolds is such a great narrator.
  3. My 10 year old has an iPad that he uses to FaceTime with friends. We live rurally so it’s not always practical for me to be driving him to friends’ houses. He usually just chats while playing video games or to set up play dates. I’m not giving him a phone quite yet because I don’t want him carrying the internet with him everywhere.
  4. I made this https://rainbowplantlife.com/thai-butternut-squash-chickpea-curry/, substituting sweet potatoes for the butternut squash. Highly recommend!
  5. That’s unfortunate. I know a lot of secular homeschoolers use Guest Hollow curriculum because it is easily adapted for our purposes. I was just looking at their Junior Geography yesterday. Those videos and quotes are really disappointing.
  6. Murder of Roger Ackroyd or Murder on the Orient Express
  7. Nope. And this actually happened to me. My grandmother and aunt “accidentally “ told me about a potential half sibling. I don’t appreciate the knowledge. But at least I know not to use the Ancestry dna service. So that’s something, I guess.
  8. My daughter has growth hormone deficiency. She’s been doing injections for almost 2 years and they also kickstarted puberty (she’s 14). Has the endocrinologist talked about what may be causing the low testosterone? My daughter has a genetic disorder and endocrine issues can be part of the syndrome.
  9. We’re doing Blossom and Root science this year for my fourth grader and special needs 8th grader. Mainly books with suggestions for videos and activities.
  10. My kids spent time in a couple Waldorf schools. They each had programs for homeschoolers. Neither of them were very strict. They encouraged healthy and unprocessed food, but didn’t specify what that meant. One had a dress code rule about not wearing clothing with media characters. My kids enjoyed their time in the schools. Lots of outdoor time in all weather. My son spent a lot of time digging holes in Kindergarten. It was just…slower and simpler, which is what I wanted for them. They sang songs, told stories, painted, made fruit salad for their snack, and played outside. My daughter really benefited from the main lesson approach, taking in information and working with it in multiple ways. She has motor planning difficulties and a lot of the movement activities were really beneficial.
  11. Definitely too young for most, but the Magic School Bus book on Human Evolution was a really good intro for my special needs middle schooler.
  12. We're using both right now. I prefer SOTW, my 3rd grader prefers History Quest. I don't think it's as readable or interesting but he does 🤷‍♀️ There is more information in HQ so that may be why. He also likes the History Hops more than the stories and myths in SOTW.
  13. I started buying those little cartons of wine. Just one at a time. I basically made it inconvenient to drink more. For me, I noticed that the craving for wine was linked to the craving for sugar. So when I reduced the amount of sugar I was taking in (I stopped drinking soda), I wanted wine less.
  14. Nope. We had a series of live in maids when I was young. Learning how to manage a household has been a long, painful process. 🙄
  15. My 12 year old got her booster as recommended by her immunologist. She had a sore arm, was feverish overnight and was tired and achy the next day. She was back to normal 48 hours after the shot.
  16. @ktgrok Not to be stalkery or anything, but please consider doing an overview of Bookshark F on your YouTube channel. The new science looks really good and I haven’t seen any videos on this history level.
  17. We're using Mosdos this year. I didn't get the Teacher's Manuals but we are using the workbooks. I like the look of it so far. We just started yesterday so I don't have too much to report yet 🙂
  18. I listened to the audio of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I was surprised how the story and description of Mr Hyde differed from what I'd always envisioned in my head. My 8 year old listened to parts of it with me and we had good some good conversations about how people are not all good or all evil. I'm looking for something a little lighter and less angsty before diving into Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Any suggestions? I started reading the Wheel of Time a million years ago, then stopped when Robert Jordan died. This series is why I don't start book series that aren't complete!
  19. Can I jump in here? Last week I finished a reread of Dune by Frank Herbert. It still holds up, even though I've watched the movie a bazillion times. Excited for the new movie coming out soon! I put the next book in the series on hold at the library. I also listened to the audiobook for The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. I really enjoyed it. HG Wells is funny! Who knew? I'm trying to catch up on classic books I missed when I was younger. Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë is up next.
  20. I’m trying to stay in lurkdom, but I couldn’t resist! This beautiful girl was bred then dumped at a kill shelter. She’s super naughty but sooo sweet.
  21. So I think I would focus on keeping the bathrooms and kitchen (and coffee table, good job!) decluttered first. When I first started working on this, I put big cardboard boxes in the bedrooms so people's stuff could be returned there without my having to come up with a permanent solution. It also helped others to see just how much stuff they actually had. I also regularly scheduled a pick up for donations. Sure, I may have been up the night before bagging things to donate. But I got rid of stuff. Slowly but surely.
  22. The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery. Very sweet romance.
  23. We painted our interior white. We used Alabaster by Sherwin Williams and I ❤️ it. The house feels so bright and clean.
  24. My 12 year old (who looks 8 ) got her shot on Thursday. She was a bit achy and not feeling great on Friday but is fine today.
  25. I think Oak Meadow would work too. It has everything you mentioned: projects, checklists, suggestions for additional books to read and additional topics to study. Plus it's written to the student in middle school so your daughter can do it fairly independently.
