  1. Woke up at 3:30AM, light was on and light switch had went faulty - it was extremely hot and the light would not shut off. DH had to take the switch apart, sparks flying as he was sure he didn't need to pull a breaker. It was charred and the wire was loose and bare. Eek, fire adverted, thank goodness. He's replacing it right now. So weird I randomly woke up at 3:30AM. DH and the kids washed the car and suburban today. I think they had fun playing in the water with dad. Heavy work day today. I took apart an area that the previous homeowners had let go - it was a peanut shaped landscaping area that had one row of landscaping blocks which were arranged unevenly. It had been overrun with weeds due to poor landscaping and had rotting rose bushes throughout. I cleaned it all out, took the blocks out and leveled it a bit, put in good landscaping fabric and 12 bags of cedar mulch... added another row of blocks and toppers... and found a pretty Amber Jubilee shrub to plant (red/purple and big). Here's the finished product. I'm absolutely exhausted. Final project: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipPo_rn2HrfaIV401mpOxRs9SdEwEPrAPNR9d6NHd2p8McU-mK6HiOOmL4C5r_WIIA/photo/AF1QipMpv4NVgl10v12KsGOX-EGVCI6Yn1Pxdh-u6WAq?key=VGtqemJSV0hjUldIajhLdzcybFVzUHoxSkVOYUtB Also got the carrots thinned out in the garden, weeded and put some weed preventer in on the plants that had a good start (snap peas, onions, tomatoes). Cleaned up the house a bit while the boys were done playing catch. I probably need to do some laundry before tomorrow (we'll be gone all day to family).
  2. Nope. I also requested an independent study - denied for summer. I've got a petition in for fall.
  3. I can drop the girl scouts (no big deal) - but it will mean I'm still in the same boat - I'll be needing childcare for the kids - during the day. Which I am very very very cautious about. I am trying to reach out to my in laws in hopes they can help... and I am sending out emails to homeschoolers we group with in hopes someone may be interested. I'll meet with the professor to explain the situation (and beg nicely) but rumor has it he isn't keen on letting students in full classes regardless of reasons :/ We'll see. Sigh.
  4. I need a certain class for my BA. I'm waitlisted for the section I need/want (an evening class). As of fall I will only need this ONE class. The reason I'm waitlisted and not registered is because I was registered for a similar course this summer and it was cancelled this past week due to low enrollment :( I have two other options: MW class from 330-430. *DD has girl scouts from 230-330 on Wednesdays about 30 minutes away from the college. Pretty sure her GS leader would help me out for the fall semester if I dropped her off and could pick her up after at her house - I'm sure I could figure something out for DS...maybe? -----I registered for this (can drop easily) just to save it for myself in case? OR I wait till Spring and hope for a night class that meets the req of my last class. BUT this past Spring there was no upper level evening classes - so I could be on the same boat. Or maybe I could PLEAD with the professor to let me in if it comes closer and I'm still on the waitlist (I'm in 1st spot on waitlist). What would you do?? Literally, I only will need these 3 credits in the fall (I will take one more class though to be eligible financial aid). I'm still kind of pouting about my class getting cancelled, I was set to be finished.
  5. DS finished up his math for the year today. He has a few Language Lessons to finish and he's done with normal year work. DD just has math left for the year. We made base 10 blocks today from buttons and popsicle sticks - they are TOO CUTE. We'll be spending today and next week just mastering the base 10 usage. Looked at next week, went EEK! We have Mon/Tues to work on any school but Wednesday -Friday we are busy with homeschool groups, playdates and a play at the theatre to celebrate the end of 1st and 3rd grade. Then, we leave and go on vacation for a week. Yay! ....still waiting to hear from my Dean. *taps foot*
  6. Spent the morning cleaning and getting school work done. DD and I will be making base 10 "blocks" tonight or tomorrow with buttons and popsicle sticks. DS has 20 min of school work left or so... and we may have time tonight for a chapter from our Harry Potter unit study. I thought I had 8 classes left to get my BA, its now looking like 4 classes. Unfortunately one of the courses I need got dropped for summer due to low enrollment, which means I'll be taking 2 in summer and 2 in fall. Just waiting (impatiently) to hear back from the Associate Dean for confirmation on the number of courses. If that's the case, I have a bunch of registration changes to do then I can start freaking out about the GRE and Praxis I exams that I will schedule in the Spring before trying to get into the MAT program for fall. Again, waiting very very very impatiently for her to respond. *taps fingers*
  7. Went with our homeschool group to the wildlife reserve, kids had a blast playing in the creek... then a picnic lunch and an hour at the playground before we had girl scouts... and then I came home and took a nap (exhausted!). Resetting for a 'normal' school day tomorrow. Edit: My tooth seems to be getting better, yippee!
  8. Yardwork done, all that we have for school tomorrow is our prehistory unit for BYL. We are meeting up with other homeschoolers at the park for a picnic playdate and then DD has girl scouts in the afternoon. Packing lunches and need to clean up the kitchen tonight.
  9. I'll pick some up tonight. My teeth aren't healthy by any means - there is thousands of work that could be done on them, no doubt. I grinded my teeth for 25 years before realizing the damage :( If it's my BACK molar, they can pull it, no biggie. I think it may be a molar in though.. I had it done the other side and OMG so much better - my mouth had so much more room. The molars crowd it bad in the back even with my wisdom teeth LONG removed. Hoping right now I just flossed too vigorously - I'll just take it super easy on that side and pick up some sensodyne toothpaste. It's only COLD that bothers it - not chewing or warm or hot things. However, it has developed into a dull constant ache so I need to try to be nice to it for a while to see if it will heal! If not, off to the dentist I will go, ugh.
  10. Done with school today except our evening read aloud. It's a beautiful day so we will spend the evening doing yardwork. Most of the chores are done as well, hooray! Unfortunately I have a major tooth pain that has been developing over the last couple days. I had something stuck in my tooth, flossed it out and had to get down in there to get it out. I think I exposed the root or something - cold things are causing extreme pain. REALLY hoping it isn't something major, I'm not digging a $1500 root canal bill right before vacation :P
  11. Two is my max and it often feels like 2 is stretching it. Right now we have a co-op group wed and girl scouts wed afternoons. everything else is evenings.
  12. Happy late May Day! I think we managed to get rid of the last of the fevers this weekend. Everyone is still working on getting healthy - DS is still hacking from coughs and DD is still sleeping in till like noon... but they are getting better, hooray! School: Math - DS Language - DS All About Spelling - DS Reading - DD Phonics - DD Social Studies - DD Read aloud for Harry Potter Unit Study Chores: Wash laundry Dishes Sweep Book hotel for family vacation Budgeting........about half done Continue working on putting together BYL into binders for summer and fall order or make (?) some kind of place value blocks for DD <<< decided to use wooden buttons I have on hand (and ordered another 200 of them) and popsicle sticks (glue 10 onto popsicle stick = a ten, take ten of those and tie them together = a hundred, repeat repeat) - this way DD can help me I think it will have more meaning Library Trip Drop off Cub Scout fundraising money Pick up prescription and more cough meds for kids
  13. I just ordered the Times Tales DVD on educents with their sale. It comes with a CD with "division and pdf printables." For those of you who have purchased or are familiar, can you tell me what the "division and PDF printables" on the CD that are coming along with the DVD? Are the PDFs worksheets that follow along/review the DVD? What division discussion is on the CD? Thank you!!
  14. We do this at least once every couple weeks when one of the children refuses to participate - if I let them refuse and excused them from work I should not be homeschooling them. They would love screen time - both children have asked repeatedly for computer based education. I offer them electives to do after they have their regular work done (latin root programs/keyboarding/etc). Until you can enforce discipline (or your wife can), it seems unreasonable to put your children's education in their hands. They will not want to do their school work on the computer. They have been PLAYING on the computers - not doing school work. When you expect them to make a change to school work only on computers, they will refuse at some point and you will be back to the same parenting issue that was never corrected. I can't make online curriculum suggestions, but there are numerous parenting education resources I can suggest. Just my opinion.
  15. We used Queen's thematic copywork for boys this past year for a child that age and liked it.
  16. We freeze but that's because I use them mostly for pies or smoothies which means I don't care about consistency when thawed.
  17. It's been a long week of fevers and sickies here. Our only goals for today are regular chores, some read alouds, manu planning for the weekend and some math with DD if she feels better. No big weekend plans.... just want to get everyone healthy and rested.
  18. My DS will be 8/9 this coming year, that's 3rd grade, right? :confused1: DD6 and DS8 do a LOT of their work together. We'll be doing most of BYL2 next year together. HISTORY: SOTW Vol. 2/Usborne World History spine MATH: Singapore 4A/4B LANGUAGE ARTS: Queen's Language Lessons (he's working on Vol 1 currently), BYL copywork/dictation/poetry memorization SPELLING: AAS 2/3 SCIENCE: BYL2 ART: BYL2 MUSIC: Homeschool Choir READING: -Trapped in Ice! 19. We use Build Your Library (CM style curriculum) and we use AAS and Queen's Language Lessons. I personally love Sandi Queen's materials.
  20. Made a yummy banana spinach smoothie for breakfast in almond milk. DS already has all his school done except phonogram work with me. DD woke up with the same fever this morning, she is back to sleep with meds. DS woke up with a nasty cough. GO AWAY GERMS!! I'm going to put the minestrone soup in the crockpot (minus pasta) and get a few other things done this AM.
  21. Yesterday DD started feeling bad, she was up with a high fever that night. Then repeat last night. Meds are keeping it at bay to a degree and I've been pushing rest for her. I've been mildly sick (probably the same bug) and now super worn out being up with her two nights in a row. DS finished up his required reading for the semester today and complained at length about being bored as I sat with DD on the couch most of the day and it was a rainy dreary day. He found some free reading (and even turned down some twaddle reading I offered) in the home library though so he survived ;) As I sat on the couch I did get a large chunk of our BYL 2 curriculum books ordered from thrift books and finished DS's custom assigned readers for the year...and ordered my books for my college classes that start in a few weeks. I prepped his work for tomorrow this evening. I'm not planning on DD school work tomorrow. If she is feeling up to it, we'll work through her reader aloud and maybe have her narrate a math lesson or two to me.... and play a math app on the school kindle or something. Tomorrow: Chores (laundry needs folded, dishes, change DD's daily sickie linens, etc) Dinner in the crockpot (some kind of minestrone soup) DS school (math, copywork, proofreading his work I corrected, work with him (from couch?) on mastering 4 phonogram cards for AAS Read another 2 chapters from Harry Potter for our BYL Unit Study and work on our Magical Item Field Guide Choose readers for DS for summer We did have a playdate scheduled but we'll reschedule due to sickies.

  23. Well, got DS's cavity filled and knocked out our reading assignments for today. Taking a chill break till he can eat due to numbness... then we'll get a math done for each. I need to get the post office today too... which means getting packages together this afternoon then swim lessons tonight at 5:30 :) I love how after March we just become the "school when we have time" family. Somehow we get done on time though - so I just go with it :p Edit: Dinner is grilled veggies and brown rice with leftover chicken, everything is chopped and ready in the fridge...
