  1. Full disclosure: My son was just accepted to his dream school early decision. His school does not release detailed statistics about the early decision acceptances. However, keep in mind that at many schools, the ED admissions numbers also include legacy students and student athletes. If you factor out these students at some schools, the ED bump doesn’t appear to be much of a bump at all. As to your original question, there are escape clauses to ED if students cannot make the finances add up.
  2. Thank you so very much for bringing this to my attention. These are wonderful!!
  3. I second both the use of the released College Board tests and the Meltzer reading comprehension books. In addition, my son really got a lot of use from the Panda SAT prep books as well. He liked both the math and the writing books. Good luck to your students!!
  4. I agree that it is worth the drive if it’s at all possible. I so hope your friend’s daughter ends up at a college she loves. This dang pandemic is tough in so many ways.
  5. That really stinks. I’m so very sorry to hear that. College admissions does seem to be based largely on black magic sometimes.
  6. He did not. He was lucky enough to have already taken both the SAT and a couple of subject tests in the fall of his junior year, and did well enough that they sufficed. I will say that we sent in copious homeschool course descriptions and reading lists, and he has worked two computer science internships, has tons of volunteer hours, and has taken and made As in courses from other four-year universities. Additionally, Cornell allowed five letters of recommendation and a professional resume. I felt that the process allowed for us to present a very broad picture of who he is as a student. All that to say, I don’t think applying test-optional would be the end of the world...they really look at many aspects😊
  7. Congrats to everyone! This college application game is a brutal one. I am so very thankful that I have been able to come to The Hive for support. Thanks to all of you who have posted great advice over the years. I couldn’t have homeschooled for the long haul without it. My boy got into Cornell!!! We are over the moon!
  8. I have hesitated to post an answer because I see that you are asking about your youngest. Therefore, you probably have more experience than I with this game. I am the parent of an only, but he is a senior this year, so I have walked through most of this journey. I see that your child is 13. Am I correct in assuming that he is in eighth grade? You say that he tests well in other subjects, but is just struggling with biology, right? Two things: 1) He is 13!! I am a big believer in students learning that test grades don’t wiggle. I, personally, don’t give make-up points, etc. I also believe that grades in junior high matter NOT AT ALL. If he is planning on using this course for his high school biology credit and makes a poor grade, he may decide to take a second biology course in high school to replace this grade. In that case, he will at least have a basic familiarity with the material. Therefore, there is no better time for your student to learn that some subjects require more time/work than others. 2) I did spend a lot of time sitting with my son when he was in junior high and modeling how to study for tests. Thirteen is a notoriously brain-fogged year. Your student may still need you to hold the reins for a bit. However, all my advice may not apply to your situation at all. That’s the beauty of homeschool😊. It takes what it takes for your student, right?? I can reassure you that my son who just submitted his college applications yesterday is NOTHING like the student that he was in eighth, or even ninth grade. He decided somewhere in ninth grade that he was going to become an academic achiever, and he made it happen! I so wouldn’t have foreseen this when he was 13...and just as an aside, biology was the only class that he never even pretended to like...we are all entitled to one least favorite subject, right?
  9. Good morning! Babies, puppies, slumber parties, and new cars...this thread really is a magical place. I live in a world where my fourteen-year-old geriatric beagle gets me up every morning at 2:00 am to go outside to pee! Is it wrong that I skip the majority of Monday holidays because I can’t figure out how to make the rhythm of my five day a week classes fit into four?! We just keep plowing through... Happy Mondaying, all!
  10. Good thought, but no A/C on the upstairs level...thanks for the idea, though! I will totally look into fleece masks!! Husband is still alive so far, but I could definitely use the prayers🤣
  11. Good morning! I now have two holes in the front room ceiling, and three-fourths of my laundry room wall has been removed. Still no idea where the leak is coming from...We thought we had located it in June, and had all the original ceiling patches repaired, only to have it start dripping through the ceiling this week. In other news, my husband decided to ‘fix’ something with our gas fireplace this morning, in spite of my pleas to leave it alone...home repair is NOT one of his many talents. I’m now spending the day with a contractor and a gas fireplace repairman. At least I won’t be lonely. I’m gonna need more M&Ms. And coffee. Off to iron my daily mask🤣. May I ask for prayers here? My husband still has his head in our gas fireplace...and a big box of matches...
  12. I suspected I was alone in this particular crazy😜 ! And I just saw another mention of a puppy! So fun! Fall is wonderful, isn’t it?! I’m off to deal with the plumber. Thanks for the welcomes. Have a great day, all!
  13. This thread makes me want a puppy! Am I the only one who now has to iron a mask every morning?? It’s getting more and more surreal...Or is that just my crazy at play? Dang things get so wadded up in the wash...
  14. Thanks! I can also add some pretzels and peanuts to the breakfast offerings. I MIGHT have just eaten all of the peanut butter chips and M&Ms out of a bag of trail mix. Breakfast of Champions! I have a plumber coming this morning for round three of trying to figure out what is dripping through the ceiling in my entryway. I shall then travel into plague country to get my flu shot. Good day planned. I truly deserved the breakfast M&Ms. Happy day to all!
  15. May I join y’all? I could really use a happy place, and you always seem to be having such fun! I’ll bring the sugar and milk for the coffee. I also have IV bags for those of us who prefer our coffee delivered more efficiently.
  16. You can buy large bamboo blinds like the ones you have at Lowe’s or Home Depot. The blind specialty stores are a rip off, in my humble opinion. We bought our house a little over a year ago and had a professional put plantation shutters on 28 windows. I requested bamboo blinds on one set of French doors, and they wanted to charge me as much for those as they did for the custom plantation shutters. The cost made no sense to me. I went to Home Depot, and have been pleased. By the way, your sunroom is great!!
  17. I think this unprofessional behavior is a real problem in public education professional development. It is, hands down, why I left my job as a public high school teacher. I can at least commiserate with you. I once had to sit through a team of administrators performing a rap for the teachers because they thought it might be cute. I had a pile of real work awaiting me in my classroom. This was a very long morning... On another occasion, I was publicly reprimanded (it’s been 20 years, and I’m still not over it) for grading papers instead of building with a LEGO set while the administrators ran around the cafeteria screaming at us to hurry and get our shelter built because there was a monsoon coming! This was supposed to teach teamwork🤷‍♀️. I was sent to the principal’s office-literally-for grading papers instead 🤣 . I also happened to be the varsity cheer coach, and focused on teamwork every day. Teamwork is the reason that none of my cheerleaders were injured in stunts. We didn’t need the LEGOs. Good Times. Hang in there.
  18. Have you thought about bamboo shades? You can add a liner behind them to close at night for privacy, but in the day you can either keep them up to see out and let in lots of light or leave them down for pretty, filtered light. I have them on my French doors in the family room and I love them. If you wanted a softer look, you could hang pretty fabric panels on either side of the window.
  19. I love where I live now, but there are days where I miss Texas back roads SO MUCH! I miss jumping in my car, cranking up the radio, and driving with no destination in mind. Here, I can only jump in my car and sit at a never-ending blockade of stoplights. No comparison. Secondly, I miss Austin’s live music scene. I had so many local favorites. I’ve lived in five states so far, and have found nothing that even comes close. And of course, I do miss living in the same state as my mom. Especially during these times! I’m so envious of people who have family close. I’m wondering when I’ll ever be able to see her again...
  20. It’s Lust for Life by Irving Stone...I’m only about half way through, but it’s fascinating so far. And sad 🙁 He also wrote The Agony and the Ecstasy about Michaelangelo. Loved it. I just ordered three more of his biographies. Now I just have to get everyone out of the house so I can read...
  21. Yes! My mom has always had a fixation on Jael...My mother is a fiery, feisty Christian Sunday school teacher😉
  22. I thought about going this route...it’d be fun to watch...
