  3. My dd (9th grade) absolutely loves Ancient Literature - and she isn't particularly a literature loving student. Carolyn
  4. I called this morning because I was getting impatient for the letter. Wendy Cantrell looked up the info for me and my 12 grade ds was awarded 8 credit hours (which was all we asked for). She said she did know students were beginning to receive their letters because she had gotten some phone calls this morning. I got the impression they were not happy phone calls. Carolyn
  5. Well, now I can't find the link to the funding info. Some of the regulations were not finalized until very recently, that could be it. Still waiting on our funding letter, which, according to the website, should have been mailed Monday. It now looks like homeschoolers are responsible for paying for textbooks as well. You're right, there is no rolling admission. You need to file a notice to participate by April, apply and get accepted to the college's program by their own deadlines, and file the application for funding by June 30. It was originally June 15, and they extended it this year. I think the hugest changes to the program were for public high school students. The high schools are required to inform their students about the program, and can not prevent a student who is accepted by a colleges CCP program from participating. I know of a few local high schools who tried to prevent some of their students from participating in the PSEO because they wanted to keep their best students at the high school. Carolyn
  6. This is our first year with it - my DS is a senior. They don't fund ALL the senior's classes first - they give all the seniors one class, then the juniors and so on down. If there is money left over after everyone gets one class, they go back to the seniors, and give them another one. I am waiting on the funding letter in the mail tday (hopefully) I am pretty sure the lowest math you can take is College Algebra. Carolyn
  7. Ds is going to take the online calculus this year. It seems like I should order the books from Lulu, and we should be ready to start the class before registering - and starting to pay $58/month. Is this right? No reason to register now if we aren't starting school for another 3-4 weeks? thanks Carolyn
  8. I responded to your pm. but did not mention that World Lit to Dante was a particular favorite of my DD. Carolyn
  9. We are watching The Missiles of October today. It is on Youtube. Carolyn
  10. Thanks for all the help. So then, what in the world is the difference between calc and AP calc? Carolyn
  11. I wanted ds to take the calc for 2 reasons; The calculus, and the experience of a college class before full time college. The calculus class would be the exact same class/course # required of math majors. He may be better off taking another class through this program (maybe programming) and doing Derek Owens Calculus at home. A one semester pace might be too much. It would help if I understood the least bit about the differences between calc 1, 2, etc. :) thanks to all! Carolyn
  12. Thanks to all. This sounds like a great option for Calculus. Carolyn
  13. Am I understanding this right? It is online lectures - start whenever, go at your own pace, but you still have an instructor grading assignments and giving feedback? And I can call it "AP" on the transcript? This almost sounds to good to be true :) Please tell me about your experiences. Carolyn
  14. If he took calc through this program, it would be for real "permanent record" stuff. If his placement test puts him in calc, I don't think they would let him take precalc. Plus, then he would have 2 years of pre-calc on his hs transcript. I think my other option is to do calculus at home, through some online option. Then see how it goes, and he could test out as a freshman if possible. Carolyn
  15. Well, shoot, I think I was hoping for the opposite answer. My plan for his senior year has always been to enroll ds in Calculus at the university (which he in all probability will attend) through their PSEOP program (no cost ). It would be the exact calculus class required for math/statistics majors. He has always done well in math (800 SAT) but the trig chapters in pre-calc (Chalkdust) have been brutal. I am worried that doing calculus for real college credit might end up backfiring and being a horrible experience. He has Aspergers. I can NOT teach calculus. Pre-calc is my limit. (Look - a math joke ;) ) Carolyn
  16. I was going to recommend speech pathology before I even finished reading your post :) Communication Disorders? Carolyn
  17. Did they repeat it in college, or place into the next class? I have always heard that it's best to start a science sequence at the college, even if you have had an AP. Is calculus the same way? Thank you! Carolyn
  18. You don't need to read Wicked to thoroughly enjoy the show. The plots are quite different and depending on your family, you may find the book to be quite offensive and inappropriate for your 14 year old. Definitely preview it before handing it off to her. Other than that, I always have a reading list for my kids for the summer. Carolyn
  19. 99% sure it is optional. My son took it in November, and I am pretty sure he didn't know it to fill in. Carolyn
  20. My ds- 17 is a junior this year, doing Chalkdust Precalculus with dvd instruction (text is Precalculus, Functions and Graphs, by Larson). He has used Chalkdust since Algebra, plus we have used AOPS, Counting and Probability, and Number Theory. He has Aspergers and enjoys math. We have many Great Courses Mathematics courses that he has enjoyed. His Math SAT score this fall was 800, and he scored in National Merit Finalist territory on the PSAT. My plan for Calculus was to apply for the dual enrollment option available to us and have him take Calc at the local university, paid by the state. He doesn't want to leave home for college (the Aspergers), so this would likely be the college he ends up attending. He thinks he would like to major in statistics. I am rethinking this now for a few reasons. If this whole experience of taking the class on a college campus is overwhelming and he doesn't do well, this route would end in a "Permanent Record" grade, affecting his GPA, and potential college admission/merit aid., as well as being a huge blow to his self confidence. Also, the chapter he has been working through has taken him 2-3 hours a day, and he just spent at least 4 hours working on the chapter test. One problem got him stuck and he doggedly stayed working on it until he got it, rather than skipping it and moving on. The math he is doing is at the upper limits of my ability and I have been trying to follow along and brush up on my skills. The chapter is Analytic trigonometry, and topics are Using, Verifying Trigonometric Identities, Solving Trig Equations, sum and difference formulas, and multiple -angle and product to sum formulas. I have no idea how much these topics figure into future calculus success. I wonder if a better plan would be to take calc online next year (He must have an actual teacher, Chalkdust Dvd's will not do the job anymore). Do many students who take calc in high school take it again at college? Any and all thoughts would be very welcome, as well as recommendations for online Calculus classes. Derek Owens, what else? thank you! Carolyn
  21. Got scores in Ohio - BRAG alert. Happy Dance of Homeschool Victory - DS got a good 13 points above what our state cut off has been the past few years. He's my aspie and I am so pleased for him. Carolyn
