  1. I'm 99% sure that you are allowed to self-train psych service dogs.
  2. Just, as an fyi, it is common to put dogs with Syringomyelia in a stroller, as many cannot have a collar or harness on due to pain. Personally, I'm thankful that I live in a place where dogs are allowed in so many places. Ymmv.
  3. It won't do anything for college. I would only join if they have cool activities or seminars for your kid or you.
  4. Every CC has different rules on how many classes you can take for DE. It is also free tuition, if I recall correctly. The problem will be the low priority that DE students get for registration, especially if your CC is impacted. To get around this, a lot of people take the CA HS proficiency exam, which would make the student a regular college student. But then, you'd have to actually pay tuition.
  5. I've been waiting for this news! Yay! Congratulations!
  6. I'm 42, and knocking out pre-reqs at the local CCs. I plan to apply to the BSN program at SDSU in the fall. I went to an advising session last month. They told me that they get 1000 applications for 40 transfer spots (2nd bachelor's are transfer students). The average admit has a 3.9 gpa overall and a 4.0 in nursing prereqs. It will be 4 or 5 semesters, with my previous BA, if I can get in. Nursing here is extremely competitive. There is certainly no nursing shortage in desirable urban areas. I'm volunteering in the ER at UCSD, and am contemplating becoming a psych NP or midwife. Good luck!
  7. We use Hakim's audiobooks for car schooling when we drive to afterschool activities. I'm a big fan of the books on audio, which you can get for free from One Click Digital through the library.
  8. Really? A text that denied climate science would scare the Bejeezus out of me!
  9. On the flip side, we love hosting big event bdays. This year, it was indoor skydiving. Last year, it was a day at an amusement park. But, what is up with people showing up with their 4 children, and expecting us to pay for them all. It's one thing to ask to bring a young sibling, but the whole family?
  10. Sacha is definitely more globally gifted vs. pointy, at least for now. But, wow, your kids still blow me away. I make Sacha participate in sports, music/theatre/art, languages, etc. because I believe in being well-rounded, but Sacha treats every activity as social hour. He spends a lot of his days playing with friends in the afternoons and evenings -- they make up imaginary games, play video games, and play outside. He's very social, so there is nothing he enjoys more than playing with friends. We also take off a solid 4 months of summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. He regresses a bit academically, but quickly catches back up. He loves going to camp, and SD is so amazing in the summer, that it is hard to even contemplate doing school. A fellow boardie, with an AL of her own, put me in touch with a woman who can administer the Woodcock Johnson for us. I will be interested to see how he does. I just don't see him as an especially pointy kid. Though he swears he wants to go to Epsilon Camp next year, and enjoys reading books like The Number Devil in his spare time, he doesn't constantly talk about math. And, I don't want to pigeon hole him. I want him to be able to dabble and explore, and find his passions.
  11. Wellesley! So awesome! Congrats to your DD!
  12. I doubt it, especially if there is video (also depends on the compression and quality of the stream). But, I would ballpark 400 MB for an hour long class.
  13. Arcadia, your older blows my mind. OP, I think Russian would be a great idea. It gives you the grammatical benefits of Latin, but in a modern language. My DS is also not a CWP fan, but really enjoys BA. I'm not sure with your background, and all the extra enrichment, that you're going to be able to slow the kid down that much. You might just have to roll with trying PA and assessing frustration tolerance.
  14. We own a business, so I loathe doing the taxes each year. Still haven't started. I never know if we will end up owing because my husband's income is so variable.
  15. We do it all the time with TMobile, but we get great coverage in San Diego. It might be more difficult in a more rural area. Also, make sure you have sufficient data to stream from the hot spot. Most newer model phones can also be used as hot spots. Check your model for tethering.
  16. Didn't he just graduate high school?! Man, the years are flying by. Congratulations to your DS!!
  17. Just wanted to update: CTY came through with basically a full scholarship for Sacha's summer camp. So, if you are lower income, please do not be put off by the high price of their programs. There is definitely generous financial aid out there. He is very excited to go to the camp!
  18. My newly turned 8 year old gave a girl a special Vday gift this year, but she's more a special friend than romantic crush per se. I think the feelings are burgeoning in him.
  19. Is there any benefit to taking the Math Counts and AMC classes if you are already doing AoPS as your primary curriculum? Are they repetitive or cover new ground?
  20. One advantage to the PSAT 8/9 is that I think it can be used for DYS qualification, whereas the SCAT cannot. Double check with DYS, though, on that. Agree with the others that the SCAT experience was easy peasy.
  21. My 3 year old is in private preschool full-time. Unsure if we will homeschool him for K. My 8 year old has been homeschooled (through a public charter) since K, but we take it year by year.
