  1. No traditions in my family, but in Dh's culture all females have same mn and all males have same mn. This seems to have ended with the current generation. Dh and I, as well as his sis and her dh have come up with our own ideas for middle names.
  2. Only one semester was required by every student - half spent in gym activities (or outdoors) the other half in class, learning anatomy. There was one other elite PE class available, but one had to apply and be accepted. The only units I remember we're badminton and cross country skiing. Oh, and the time I fell on my face carrying a girl piggyback in a relay race. Oye! Not a fan of this kind of PE!
  3. Regarding the we must increase our bust... My friends older sisters used to sing it like this We must, we must, we must! We must increase our bust We know, we know, we know! We know that they will grow. We will, we will, we will! We will take the pill We must, we must, we must, we must. We must increase our bust. Apparently the pill used to be much stronger causing breast to grow significantly, or so I was told. Is that an old wives tale too?
  4. In my experience, in our 7 years of homeschooling, harassment is extremely rare. I can't say I've ever felt harassed - judged maybe a time or two, but never blatantly harassed. I'm sure there are people who don't agree with the idea of homeschooling, but here people are usually way too "polite" to say anything negative to your face. I had one person, a close friend at the time, say "I don't believe in homeschooling" but we never spoke of it again beyond that and continued to hang out and get along well until we moved away. I suppose we just agreed to disagree. I did not feel offended when she said it, or that she was upset in any way. It was just matter of fact. And I suspect she knew very little about it, so it didn't matter to me at all. Occasionally, I can tell by the questions a person asks upon learning we homeschool that they aren't merely curious, but sort of checking up on us iykwim. This is the ickiest thing I've experienced in terms of judgement, but again, I would say harassed was not quite what I was experiencing, just sort of a mistrust on the part of the questioner, as though I were incompetent, if that makes any sense. Again, this is rare - perhaps because most people say nothing if they have nothing good to say. But I live in a place famous for politeness. ETA obviously this is just my experience. I suspect harassment would be more common if my life circumstances were different. I've observed people tend to be more judgmental of those with low income or low levels of parental education, which aggravates the heck out of me.
  5. Here's one that I was told when my children were babies. You shouldn't breast feed because there is no way to measure how many ounces your baby is getting at each feeding, so your chubby, growing baby, might actually be starving. What!?
  6. We had an NHL hockey player (Sydney Crosby) enrolled at my high school several years ago. He never set foot on the property afaik, he worked online I believe. Couldn't she do something like that when she travels?
  7. Christianna, or Gabriella would fit in nicely with her sisters names.
  8. It's so hard to wade through all the therapy options. I don't want to get into specifics here - I'm not looking for specific direction. I'm just wondering how people decide which therapies to pursue when every therapist believes their therapy to be the magic bullet. Or certain evaluators favour certain therapies but second opinions point to a different direction -- it's all just overwhelming. How do you narrow things down when faced with so many options?
  9. I have to log in every single time I come here despite choosing the remember me option. I don't think it's an issue with settings on my device(iPad), because it doesn't happen at any other forum, or Facebook or anything like that. I don't log out, so it isn't that. Am I completely clueless and doing something wrong? Any ideas?
  10. I just bought it to use this fall. Im loving the way it looks as I'm reading through it - I've read about half, so far. Does she get into how to schedule it? Do you do it chapter by chapter, consecutively? Or take bits from each chapter? I did see a sort of schedule somewhere, like, free write on Thursday's and high tea and poetry on (I forget the day). Is that it? I am looking forward to giving it a try, but am feeling like I don't know where to start. Do you just find an interesting lesson and run with it? And what about all the lesson suggestions via email. They're great, but do you just pick and choose randomly?
  11. When you're plating food for the rest of you, plate your Dh's too (hot stuff only) and pop it into the oven with the light on. It'll stay hot til he gets home. Don't put dressing directly onto the entire salad. His portion will stay fresh that way in the fridge.
  12. I'm not sure why I'm in the minority here, but I hear chatter about mental illness all the time. Its in the media, all over social media, we all know people who suffer from it, I'm finding it hard to believe that people are unaware of the seriousness of depression and that we need more awareness raised. it may be because I'm outside of the US, but my perception is very different from what I'm reading on this thread. I've known lots of folks with depression and who use meds to manage it.
  13. What if instead of taking away his phone for a day or a week or whatever, you take it away UNTIL he performs such n such a task to a certain standard with the right attitude. If you just keep giving it back after time has passed, he learns to do time instead of change his ways. If Minecraft and the iPhone are his currency, use it to cause changes in him. His diagnoses are no excuse for poor behaviour, he is capable of getting along and doing things to an appropriate standard.
  14. Colleen, did you have to go to the US for his testing? Did you travel far? Curious 'cause I'm in Moncton and looking ahead - my kids are still in Elementary and middle school. Glad your ds felt mostly good about the test. That sounds promising.
  15. According to BMi charts, I'm 15-20 lbs overweight, as i write this. But I like the way I look and feel. I'm healthy. I don't like the judgement I get, that's hard and must be a lot harder for people who are in the obese category. This world sucks. But I'm happy. Some people look fine with a little extra weight, but I'm short, so it looks like more. My mother and sisters all went through a period of being overweight around my age (late 30s-early 40s). And now are all back in the normal (according to BMi) range, so I've concluded it maybe something genetic and I can look forward to being thin again soon, and that will be good too. They don't diet, we don't believe in dieting. They all do moderate exercise, as do I. Things like walking, mountain climbing and trail hikes, swimming, gardening, hand weights and step aerobics. We eat normal foods, lots of veggies and meat, some fruit, butter, cheese and some junky stuff. Not a lot of sugar and grains just because they aren't my thing - so pretty much the way my momma fed me.
  16. This is what I've been thinking all night. But does that ever happen? I've often wondered why they don't use the same kinds of guns they use on large animals - the kind that deliver a dose of meds that makes them sleep, but if he's got high powered weapons I guess they have to think about the safety of officers and bystanders.
  17. Yes, I've checked out his f/b page and that does seem to be his agenda. It's so weird, I saw his face and realized he has served our family many times at Walmart, helping us carry large items out - that sort of thing. Who would have ever thought someone with such a regular life (on the surface, at least) would be capable of mass killing? One news story quoted an ex-coworker of his as saying he had said he wanted to go out in a blaze and take people with him. If that's true, why on earth wouldn't the police have been notified?!
  18. Fingers crossed that this is it. 12 hours have passed and "high risk take down on male" just came over the scanner. ETA false alarm - was not Justin
  19. My parents and two of my brothers have homes within the lockdown area. I live just outside of the city. It's scary here right now. They still have not captured the gunman apparently and rcmp are advising people to stay locked inside. Schools and businesses are closed. Hoping now that daylight is here the search will turn fruitful. If you're the praying kind, we could use your prayers. Liber, are you originally from this area?
  20. K, Canucks, I need info on standardized tests available to us. Where do I get them? How are they administered and marked? Which ones are useful and why? And if you have any other info about them, I'm all ears.
  21. (((hugs))). I am so sorry for your loss but thankful your mom is pain free.
  22. Is there a spay/neuter and release program in your area for feral cats? That's who I'd contact before the SPCA, if so. Call the vets in your area to see if they know of anyone doing this. they usually trap, spay the mom and release her when the kittens are old enough and find good homes for the kittens and spay/neuter them when they are old enough, for a modest donation. At leat that's how our local one is run.
  23. I've had a dedicated homeschool room and didn't like it because it was too far from the kitchen and it was on the top floor. Every time the doorbell rang meant running down stairs, the library is also on the main floor, I couldn't prepare lunch while supervising the kids and letting the pets in and out was also a hassle. I've switched to doing school in the dining room or at the kitchen table, more often, and it's perfect! Who knew? So, if your garage is just off the kitchen, I'd say go for it. It is nice to have most of the homeschool stuff in one room. The only tip I have would be lots of storage compartments or shelves and a rolling shelf for the currently-in-use materials. I bought a laundry cart for this purpose because it was cheaper than a library cart and the right size for us.
  24. A couple of things we did that helped were buying a large rug and making this the Lego area. I didn't care if the kids left them out mid project as long as they were on the rug. I stayed off the rug for the sake of my feet. The second thing was using organizing boxes with various sized compartments for putting all the like pieces together. I gave my kids my old Caboodle (a blast from the past, no?) and I picked up a Wilton cake decorating tool sorter that I found cheap at a discount store. I would imagine a tackle box (or two) or tool box could work too, if it has compartments. But the rug was the biggest helper of the two. I don't think I've stepped on a Lego since putting it down. We bought a rug with a very flat texture - the kind you could roll a toy car on easily. That makes the projects lie flat.
