  1. I feel very lucky to get her into a live class that works with all of our other classes (have to juggle the 'net and who is on at any one time!)
  2. Eric Reini's sections are filled unfortunately. There is an instructor by the name of Peter Ohotnicky. Seems to be new.
  3. Gosh! It has been a LONG time since I wrote my profile signature!  My then-11 year old is now a rising senior!! Must update asap!! lol

  4. As a parent of a gifted child with a similar situation, this makes me so happy that you said this.
  5. I am so late to the game but I am in search of an online, live Algebra II class for my rising sophomore this fall. I'm going to check out Blue Tent, Wilson Hill, Kolbe Academy, and Live Online Math. I am looking for secular, honors if possible with solid preparation for future SAT/ACT testing. I'd love to hear any thumbs up or thumbs down, if you have any experiences with any of the above! Or, if you know of a quality program that I am not aware of, please share. Thanks much! Maryann
  6. Can you tell me what the Singapore DM series is? I don't know what the DM stands for. SaveSave
  7. You have the series for Oxford University Press? The price seems a little steep.
  8. Question for those doing other than SOTW... do those curriculums all have their own activities or "plan," or did you do the SOTW plan (timeline, outline, etc.) just with these materials?
  9. Well, DS would LOVE this idea! Are these computer games or some platform? (Wii, Xbox, etc) Thanks for all the suggestions!
  10. Thanks so much! He hasn't done the Singapore WPs, so that is a great idea! I need to check out the Key to books. I haven't seen those before.
  11. This sounds awesome!! But...sounds like a lot of work on your part! Kudos to you!! I'm going to check out Oxford University Press, too.
  12. I'm not sure what to do with DS this year for math. He completed Singapore Math 5A and 5B last year and did well and didn't have any trouble, but now I'm not fully confident that he retained some of the material well enough. He is really difficult for me to figure out. He is highly advanced overall (and especially in language) and advanced in math but doesn't seem to retain anything "process" oriented. I tried to supplement with Life of Fred thinking he would love the literature aspect but he recently said he doesn't think it is adding much. He said he enjoys the story but that he needed something else. So, I thought maybe we could add in Beast Academy as a supplement? I'm not really sure how the Singapore levels might pair up with the various levels of Beast Academy? I thought he could take a break from SM before moving into 6A and do something else. He could/should be moving into pre-algebra (6th grade this year) but I don't know that that he is solid enough yet on his fractions, decimals, and percents. I would like him to really know his math and feel comfortable with it before just pushing him ahead. I am trying to move him at his pace rather than just push him ahead. I guess it all comes down to the fact that I am not confident that I know what he needs. Supplementary materials? Drilling? Move ahead anyway despite my concerns? I am not an intuitive math person so this is really hard for me to figure this out!! I conceptual never "got" math (unless it was geometry). Would appreciate any input! cross-posted to Logic/Middle School board

  14. Thanks so much! I'll check out History Odyssey level 2 and Beautiful Feet. Haven't heard of that one (BF) at all before!
  15. Last year was our first year using SOTW vol. 1 and since it was our first year, it worked out well for my 3rd and 5th grader. The children really enjoyed listening to the readings and enjoyed the activity pages. Additionally, my youngest (1st grade) learned quite a bit just from listening to the supplemental audio (he was in Montessori last year so wasn't HS'd). We started school this week and my plan for this year was to use SOTW vol. 2 but today DS (now 6th grade age-wise) mentioned he would like something more challenging. He is definitely advanced and is an advanced reader but has a bit of a mental block with writing. I understand how SOTW is laid out using it for the three levels but I was wondering if there might be another text/resource/curriculum that would provide more bulk or meat for DS, while I continue to use SOTW for my now 4th grader and 2nd grader (new to HS this year).
  16. DS completed Singapore Math 5B in the spring and did well, but now I'm not fully confident that he retained some of the material well enough. I was interested in how the Singapore levels might pair up with the various levels of Beast Academy? I thought maybe he could take a break from SM before moving into 6A and do something else. Would appreciate any input.
  17. Yes, please! I'm looking for a schedule for MCT Voyage for my 10yo DS.
  18. DS LOVES membean! He is LA accelerated and uses it as a spelling/vocabulary program. We purchased the membership and have used it for about six months. He spends around 30 min/day with it and it is one of his favorite lessons. I am very pleased with the design, layout, and approach. I met the creator (Brett) at the VA Homeschoolers Conference last year and he was quite impressive in his understanding/usage of language.
  19. Ooh…one I actually did enjoy and might even like to try again. Thanks for the reminder!
  20. Ah, such a fun thread! My couldn't stand as a child include: Alice in Wonderland; Peter Pan; and The Call of the Wild. In high school, it was The Ra Expedition, Catcher in the Rye (couldn't get what was the big deal) and the Hobbit.
  21. I recently found this at the Cincinnati conference -- http://www.squiltmusic.com/p/about_14.html She was sharing a booth with Prof. Carol Reynolds. I loved everything they had in their booth. I have no musical background and the Squilt looked like a nice introduction. I plan on pairing it up with our history this fall.
  22. We used CE1 last year and DS loved it. I went ahead and got the color version of CE2 for next year. I felt that the color really did and a nice dimension of depth and texture to the ancient artifacts and architecture. Since DS loved it so much, and since I plan on being able to use it for two more children after him, it was worth it. Good luck!
  23. Thanks so much for all of your input! I think I'm going to look at Singapore math. Can anyone tell me if there levels are comparable? Meaning if he is finishing Level 5B in MM, would he be on the 5th level of Singapore?
  24. Originally, we started with two pages each day. When he would get behind, I would assign half the problems to help him get caught up. I am definitely not a math person so it is hard for me to really assess the approach that is being taken by a curriculum (spiral v. mastery, too incremental progression, etc.) It took from fall until now for me to realize that this wasn't a good "fit" and that maybe it wasn't my son! :(
  25. DS melts down every once in a while and I started thinking today that it usually seems to be when doing Math Mammoth (he's working on 5A). He completed 4A Beast Academy and did well, enjoying it. He has also worked all the way through Life of Fred to Decimals & Percents. But, Math Mammoth…. seems to be a struggle. I thought it was him - thinking math wasn't "his thing." Now, I'm thinking maybe it is MM and the way it explains (or doesn't) concepts. Anyone else feel similarly? Any math curriculum suggestions to replace MM? BTW, MM works for DD just fine (finishing level 2A, no problems). Thanks!!!
