  1. We received the sample cd's with our order and just put them aside. I just watched the sample lessons as you suggested, Victoria, and I am really impressed. I am really considering this option and I think my sons would get a lot out of the lectures. I was considering buying the cd's with the labs and this is comparable in price. It is hard to understand exactly what is on the lab cd's but this option seems to have the lectures and labs.
  2. Would anyone like to explain their schedule for BJU Science? We will be using grade 5 and grade 7 (Life Science). The schedule in the book doesn't seem great to me and I think I need to try something else. Maybe reading, then questions, then labs, and last quiz for each chapter? Please tell me what works for you!!
  3. I was wondering if the custom field would be a place for that. Thanks, I will try that.
  4. I am wondering if anyone can give me ideas for quickly being able to see where you are in the school year. Some of our lesson plans have many items, some have fewer, and some subjects always get done every day, some - not so much. I was wondering if there is a way to use the sequence, order, custom or some other way to show where a particular assignment falls in the year, maybe by week (week 1-36) or percentage of the year (at lesson 14 we might have completed 20% of year). Maybe if I could easily see that we have completed 75% of math, or week 27, and in art we are in week 5, it might help me to even things out a bit.
  5. We have finished SOTW 1 and Connecting With History 1 and I would like to find a way to combine them. Does anyone know where I can find information for combining the second two volumes? I have seen combinations for Volume 1 but am unable to find something for Volume 2.
  6. We had such a difficult time choosing something for science this year. I wanted something that was fairly intense because my boys are very interested in science and now with middle school I thought we needed to step it up. We just received our order from BJU, 5th and 7th grade science. Uh oh. :scared: It certainly is intense and very thorough, but I am very concerned about the time required to teach both. BJU science users, should I have combined them in something or will it not be so bad?
  7. If I can't remember what an abbreviation is, I search for the abbreviation and homeschool. It almost always works!
  8. My boys both take piano lessons and as I am setting up my planner for their other subjects, I am wondering what others do about tracking practice. They have been taking lessons for 4 years so their teacher expects a fair amount of practice in both time and specific areas each week. In the past I have made checklists that I fill in each week with specific items and they are supposed to use that as a guide and check it off. When we do that (?!) it works so much better. I searched online and really couldn't find any examples of how people track music practice so I was wondering how you do it. I usually have one boy practice while I work with the other in one of his subjects so it is hard to keep saying 'did you do the scale for that piece', 'how many times did you play that song', and without something very clear for them to follow, it's not happening. I know homeschoolers play a lot of instruments so I was hoping you could tell me (or even better, show me) what works for you? Thanks!
  9. I gave the 5th grader the WWE3 and 4 mastery tests and he did great in narration and comprehension but had some difficulty with dictation. His sentences were not word for word (but close) and he had some spelling and punctuation errors, as well as some random upper and lower case letters. Where would you place him? I just can't decide. By grade he could start in Writing With Skill but after seeing how poorly he did with spelling, punctuation and upper/lower cases, I know he needs more work. I am starting the 7th grader in Writing With Skill.
  10. I am going to use Writing With Ease this year and bought the Level 4 Workbook. Do I need something else? I saw The Complete Writer that had all four levels in it. Should I have both?
  11. I just got the CD in the mail for VPlanner and I have a question for someone who is already using it. Can you only have 9 subjects per child? The way I usually have things broken down, we have more than that. Any suggestions?
  12. My boys are 10 and 12 and last year we purchased the 3 year membership. They do the online video art academy lessons and love them. They just started at the first lesson and do however much they have time for. They may do one or more lessons, but they would spend as much time as they could and they never complain about this class. That is really great because we are "artistically challenged" and I am so happy they are enjoying this and learning. I am not sure of the difference between School of imagination and Online Video Art. Hopefully someone else has tried School of Imagination and will have more information.
  13. Does anyone use this on a Mac? The site says it may or may not work . . .
  14. I need to remove Homeschool Tracker from my Mac because my comp is so old and running out of available space so I have to remove parallels. I really liked HST and don't know what to use. What do you think is the next best choice?
  15. I am considering Planbook but I am hoping someone can answer some questions. It seems there is a limit of 19 courses you can schedule. How would you do that if you have several students? The courses add up quickly if everyone has a different math, writing, grammar course, etc. I would like to use it for nature study, piano and a few other things so when I print a checklist for the day, everything will be in one place. If you are using Planbook - how do you like it?
  16. I have been hoping to hear a review from someone who has it also. I would love to know how you use it - daily, weekly, are there plans?
  17. Do you mean they should both start with WWS?
  18. Thanks Carolyn! That's good to know. Did you take LC before First Form?
  19. My rising 5th and 7th graders have been using IEW and Easy Grammar and we really want to switch to WWE/WWS and FLL/ALL. They enjoy Latin, they love to read and we narrate many books but have never done dictation. I gave the 5th grader the WWE3 and 4 mastery tests and he did great in narration and comprehension but had some difficulty with dictation. His sentences were not word for word (but close) and he had some spelling and punctuation errors, as well as some random upper and lower case letters. Easy Grammar does not do sentence diagramming so that will be new for both. I don't believe there is a placement test for FLL/ALL. Could you tell me where you would place them? Should we add WWW? We usually do a little bit of HSing in the summer so should I start something now to prepare for the switch?
  20. My boys completed LC1 last year and MP website recommends going on to First Form Latin next. They will be 5th and 7th grade this year. Has anyone taken this route or taken First Form? They watched the LC DVD's and took the online class and really enjoyed both and did well. I would like to not sign up for the online class this year because of the cost. I am concerned about that because they did so well though and would not like to stop their progress in a class they are doing well without lots of :smash:. Have you done First Form well without the online class? Appreciate any advice.
  21. My son is in seventh grade and reads anything he can get his hands on. He has a good vocabulary and because of his love for reading, we have not used a vocab program. He will be taking his second year of Latin this fall so I think that helps too. I remember when his older brothers studied for the SAT's they used prep books which included a lot of vocabulary and I was thinking maybe we should start using something. He does like learning new words so he would probably enjoy some type of program. It would need to be pretty advanced so he doesn't think it is busywork. Bored students=:banghead: for Mom Any opinions, suggestions?
  22. My oldest son had such bad penmanship we always said he would make a great doctor. He's in his last year of medical school. The second is just as bad at handwriting and just graduated from college. They both say they can't remember how to write in cursive because they never see it or write it. They print when they have to (which isn't often) and it is not pretty. The younger boys, 10 and 12, continue with handwriting programs but other than the actual handwriting pages, their writing is atrocious. We will continue to work on it but I can't see that it will really change or even matter. I wish I could say something more encouraging but I believe people think differently and have different skills, strengths and weaknesses. We are not artistic people and maybe that has something to do with it, not sure. Just as in any subject, my boys have to do their best and we lead with their strengths. In the long run their handwriting will not hold them back from doing whatever they choose to do with their lives.
  23. Wendy, I feel the same way when I look at the program. It really looks fun and the instructor is very engaging. My boys are very interested in science and I need to find a good program this year. It seems most of the programs that people really like are for 5th grade and below and the boys want something advanced. My oldest son is in medical school and he has not been impressed with most of what I have shown him. The boys are 5th and 7th grade so we still need some fun too. Did you keep a notebook? Is that the only writing and do you think they retained anything or are they just watching fun videos?
  24. I don't know much about Supercharged Science but since there have been no replies I am wondering if it isn't very popular?
