  1. We have used Teaching Textbooks so far. I was going to continue with that but people keep telling me he should use something more challenging or with an instructor. Any suggestions for programs?
  2. We are looking for Pre-Calc. I have never heard of Asynchronous classes.
  3. My son will be a junior this year and has completed Algebra 2 and Geometry. I was planning to have him continue math at the community college this year but we are going to have several opportunities to travel this year and I know he can't miss that much time from the college campus. I am not sure what to do. Does anyone have suggestions for online classes at this level that he could do wherever we are?
  4. We have the GC Introduction to the Universe and the Filippenko book, The Cosmos Astronomy in the New Millennium. I was wondering if anyone has made lesson plans to use the two together.
  5. I am looking for a Catholic curriculum for my eighth grade son which he could possibly continue through high school. We have never used a box curriculum before but I think for this particular boy it might be helpful to follow a rigorous program this year to prepare him for high school. I have been looking at Seton, Mother of Divine Grace, and Kolbe. Whichever one I look at seems better until I go look at the others again. I have to say I don't think their websites are very helpful. Is there anyone who has used them or seen them in person who could help me see the differences so I can make a decision? He is a 13 year old boy so I don't want him to be bored or use something that is too easy.
  6. Muttichen - The scores are from his online teacher. As far as the MCQ's he seems to be having the most problem with really paying attention to what the question is asking.
  7. Unsinkable - Thank you so much! I had not seen that but it is very encouraging.
  8. My son is scheduled to take the APUSH exam this week and he is only getting about 50% of his mcq's correct. He usually gets 9's on his essays. Someone said he should not take it. What do you think?
  9. My son, who will be in tenth grade in the fall, is interested in taking astronomy. He found the Great Courses: Understanding the Universe course. I think this is the Teaching Company? The video download is $679. Does this go on sale? What else would we need? Would we need a textbook? I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Barb
  10. I just got the books for Henle Latin from Memoria Press. We have used their First and Second Form programs in the past with good results. The Henle program does not have any type of workbook, just a daily list of assignments, and only includes answers for some things. I have no background in Latin. I am very concerned about how well my ADD boys will do. If you have used Henle, can you please tell me how it worked for you.
  11. I have almost 30,000 photos in iPhoto. I have been having some problems with iPhoto lately and I don't know if there are too many or if iPhoto is just buggy but I don't trust it anymore. Is there a program like iPhoto (I love the faces part) that will store photos somewhere else besides my computer?
  12. I want to back up my photos somewhere outside of my house in case of fire, theft, or other disaster. I had carbonite but it was a pain and there were always problems. What do you do?
  13. I guess what I want to know is are AP exams and SAT Subject Tests interchangeable, or is it good to have both? My older boys only took AP exams but it has been a while!
  14. My son is taking the APUSH exam in May and I was wondering if he should also take the SAT subject test for US history. I am not really familiar with the SAT subject tests. Thanks.
  15. I am looking for some reading suggestions for a 13 year old boy. He loves to read and we are looking for some quality fiction books, with characters that are good role models. We're not looking for books with anti-heroes but heroes with values he would want to imitate. He has been through every book I can think of several times!
  16. We are going to a conference in Orlando in November and my 12 year old wants to go to LegoLand and my 14 year old wants to go to Universal Studios. They have never been before and I was wondering how much time to schedule for each park. Any idea?
  17. at the beach - I am worried that the Great Books class along with creative writing and research paper will be too much too, especially with an AP class that requires a good amount of writing. Idk. I will check out Latin for the New Millennium, thanks for the suggestion.
  18. mckive6 - thanks for looking at the plan. He is in Mrs. Richman's class! I am so happy to hear you were happy with her class. The co-op we are using is pretty good, last year was our first year with them and we had a great experience. I was thinking of a modern foreign language a little later, once he adjusts to high school. Maybe next year, we'll see. Thanks so much for taking the time to give me some feedback. I feel like there is a fine line between overloading and under loading and I won't know until October!
  19. I am trying to plan 9th grade for my son this year. We are moving to more co-op and online classes because he needs to be accountable to someone else while I still have hair that hasn't been pulled out. Please tell me where you think he is over-loaded and what is missing. AP US HISTORY: Online Class, two formal essays per month, similar to AP US History exam essays, as well as shorter less formal responses to 'History in the News', Historical Cartoons, summaries of original History Interviews, and Document-Based Question (DBQ) Follow-Up responses. SCIENCE WITH LAB: Co-op Exploring Creation With Biology Apologia) Lecture 1 hour, Lab 1 1/2 per week. MATH: Geometry (Teaching Textbooks)? WRITING: Co-op Creative Writing - Daily creative journaling entries and weekly technical worksheets, weekly reading assignments, monthly creative responses and literary analyses. Book List (in order as we will discuss them throughout the year in class): 1) Autobiography/Biography/Memoir -- The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank 2) Play -- script format of The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett 3) Fables/ Parables (comparison) -- Collection of Aesop's Fables by Aesop (there are 656 fables in all; your collection should encompass most, if not all) and Jesus's parables found in the Gospels. 4) Fairy Tale - Hansel and Gretel by Brothers Grimm (1812) 5) Historical Fiction -- Little Women or Little Men by Louisa May Alcott (you may choose either or both books) 6) Fantasy/Science Fiction -- This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti 7) Mystery -- Sherlock Holmes -- The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 8) Political Satire -- The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum 9) The last 6 weeks of class will be devoted to a comprehensive unit on poetry. There is no prior preparation suggested for this unit. WRITING: Co-op Fall Semester Only! Research Paper Class - Step by step approach to crafting a major research paper. LITERATURE: Online Great Books Program Angelicum Ancient Greeks, 2 hour online live seminar/week, weekly readings, study questions, 2 essays per semester (4 per year) 5-6 pages each. ART: Co-op class once per week. MUSIC: Weekly Piano Class (6th Year) and daily practice. PHYS ED: Co-op Class once per week. LATIN: Not sure what we will use here, finished First and Second Form from Memoria Press. Possibly Henle?
  20. Is anyone currently using (or used in the past) the Angelicum Great Books program? I am considering it for my ninth grade son. Would love to hear what you thought about it.
  21. My son is interested in taking an AP History class this year and is considering AP US History. The program he is considering states that they expect the student to take the AP Exam. He really loves history but I am concerned about the test. In your experience, are ninth graders who complete an AP class 'ready' for the exam? And why does the program care if they take the test?
  22. I am switching my 6th and 8th grader to Voyages in English and am wondering what else they need for language arts. I don't have their books yet, should arrive this week. I am not sure how much writing is included but they are each taking a co-op writing class for the whole year. So, do they still need vocabulary or spelling? If so, what would you recommend?
