  2. This is how we did it too. My 23 year old lives on her own and her house is clean. My 21 year old and 18 year old live with me and they are great help. There is more than one one to accomplish the goal of teaching kids to clean. SaveSave
  3. We just got power back after 49 hours. It went out Friday at noon. We are enjoying heat (it was 56in our house this morning), wifi and electricity.
  4. My sister had G-Barre after getting her second dtap vaccine as an infant. Her legs were paralyzed for three days. She fully recovered and is a healthy mom of two today. It was scary and she never got another dtap.
  5. My daughter's engineering degree (130 hours) could only be completed in 4 years if she took 32 hours her freshman year, 35 hours her sophomore year, 33 hours her junior year and 30 hours her senior year.
  6. My son just got accepted to VMI. Now we wait for scholarship numbers before he makes a decision. (VMI scholarship interview in mid-March)
  7. He got a letter in the mail from the college in question today. We all gathered in the dining room while he opened it. As he put down the envelope I glanced at the return address... Financial Aid ...yep he was offered student loans... but still no admissions decision.   (we are assuming that he is in, but are definitely finding the reverse mail delivery amusing)
  8. To me, that is almost funnier. "You can't come to our school but we will give you money" His scholarship letter didn't proffer that benefit. I am not too worried either.
  9. My son just got a letter inviting him to schedule a scholarship interview at one of the colleges he applied to. The funny thing is that he hasn't yet received an admissions decision from the school. So... he called the admissions office and told them what happened and asked if he could assume that he has been accepted. Their reply was that they couldn't share that information over the phone and that he would need to wait for a letter.   we are scheduling a scholarship interview. SaveSave
  10. I had never successfully used a tampon (even after having three children) before starting to use the Diva cup. Tampons always hurt me too. I have used a diva cup for 14 years now.
  11. 106 physical in the last 6 months 27 digital in the last 6 months our first order was in 1998
  12. This is a great point and exactly why we tested. My husband's mom was born in Japan and didn't emigrate to the US until she was in her mid-30s and his dad was from Louisiana. My heritage is 98%-europea-been-in-the-US-since-the-Mayflower. We were discussing that because of how DNA is passed that our kids could mathematically range from 0% Japanese to 50%. We did the test that day after Christmas. My daughters came back as 20% (pale, pale white skin, blue eyes curly brown hair) and 25% japanese (blond hair green eyes but a Japanese face, she looks just like my MIL except blond with green eyes) and my son came back as 33% (he has brown eyes, brown curly hair and epicanthic folds on his eyes). Both girls have inherited the Asian flush reaction to alcohol from my husband. My husband came in at 51%. It was fun to see.
  13. My husband and I bought a mattress set from Costco and used it for 12 years. I was still very happy with it but my husband was not (no real reason, just wanted something new) So we went to mattress store and lay on their super-duper-fancy-computer-controlled-gizmo bed that told us exactly which mattress to buy. Of course it was obscenely expensive. But we went with its recommendation. I hated the bed and so did my husband even after trying it for a month. It was like lying on a piece of concrete. Fortunately for us, it started slumping on his side of the bed (like the top layer was actually slipping off the top) so we were able, after many pictures, phone calls and letters, to return it to the store and select a new bed. we went with less expensive, more traditional mattress set, that still cost a lot more than our Sealy Posturpedic from Costco. The new bed is better but I don't love it and for the price I should. My husband recently mentioned that we would be avoiding the mattress store in the future and we would just purchase our mattresses from costco.
  14. Absolutely. 1300 calories is too few for anyone. No matter what MyfitnessPal says. I have spent almost a year meeting weekly with a dietician. Our body has hunger cues for a reason. They're not to be ignored. Eat when you are hungry. Pay attention to what your body wants and eat that. Stop when you are full. Not stuffed, full. If you feel too full for more than 15 minutes after eating, you ate too much. Eat a little less next time.
  15. Its just the early 2000's view. The 80s was, cholesterol is bad The 90s was all about fat being evil the 2000s were carbohydrates 2010 was gluten. Now we are heading into "sugar is evil"
  16. Thank you, this is exactly what I needed help with. How to showcase the job skills that I have built in my volunteer positions. I am definitely applying for teaching jobs but am going to include my data platform and web application work because I think that the niche that is going to get me hired ahead of a credentialed teacher is technology education. In the homeschool community I am the technology educator, I have spoken at homeschool meetings on the topic and all the classes I have taught have been science and technology classes. I have taught six LEGO simple and motorized machines classes for middle school, an app programming class, 2 cyber security classes that included coaching cyberpatriot teams, 4 digital electronics classes that involved soldering and building an oscilloscope and a self designed project-based intro to engineering class for high school. I plan to focus on the classes that I have taught but I perceive that the website work will strengthen my credentials as a technology teacher. I have considered just teaching my technology classes to homeschoolers for pay. While the hourly rate is probably much higher than classroom teaching, I don’t really have a space to teach from and I doubt that I would be able to fill as many hours.
  17. I live in the DC metro area in Fairfax County. Schools here (including the public schools) hire without a teaching certificate but your contract states that you must earn the teaching certificate in your first three years on the job. I have a friend that was hired at a Catholic school this way last year. She has been encouraging me to follow suit.
  18. I have an engineering degree that is 25 years old. I have been homeschooling for the past 18 years and my youngest graduates in June. I have not been employed at all since May 1994. I have decided to apply for teaching jobs in the local Catholic schools. I am working on a resume. I am a serial volunteer. How far back should I take my resume? In the last 8 years I have ben particularly active with several organizations. I led a 50 family homeschool group for 5 years. During my time as leader, I transitioned them from a yahoo group to a homeschool life account and have continued acting as their head admin for the last 2 years. I was advancements chair and webmaster for my sons Boy Scout troop for 5 years I have taught technology classes in a 450 student co-op for the last 7 years. I also transitioned them from a paper only admin system to a homeschool-life account and act as their head admin. Do I need to/ should I specify exactly what classes I have taught at the co-op or should I just mention that I was lead teacher in two classes a week for the last 7 years? Prior to these positions my volunteer work was more hourly kind of stuff, leading activities for homeschool kids, running an American Girl club for a bookstore. etc. Should I include these kinds of things on my resume or just include the last 7 years? At the co-op and Boy Scout troop I handled the group website administration as well as an additional, unrelated role. Should I list them as two separate jobs? Thanks for any help you can give me. I am really excited to apply. I have been mourning the end of my homeschool career because I have absolutely loved my job. I hate that I am being forced into retirement. I have really been struggling with what I want to do next year and last week I was upset because I realized that I was suddenly going to be in the same category as my mother, an empty-nester. All of my friends will still be homeschooling little kids and I realized that I am not ready to be in the same category as my mother. I had my kids very young and I have time for a whole other "life" before I retire (I just turned 46). I decided that I want to keep teaching and it seems like a great time of year to be putting in applications for positions for next school year.
  19. This is why we got 23andme kits for christmas. My husband is 1/2 Japanese and and I am 99% european. Neither of our daughters looks at all Japanese (blond hair/green eyes and ghost white/dark curly hair/Bright blue eyes) our son looks more japanese but has very curly hair. However both girls have Asian Flush reactions to alcohol. It got us talking about genetics and how in a purely mathematical sense the kids' DNA could range from 50% asian to 0% asian depending on which DNA they got. We decided to order the tests right then. We sent ours in the week after christmas so I am sure that we will be waiting a while.
  20. There is a series of video games called Fallout. The game is set in a 1940's/1950's post apocalyptic world. Anyway there is a playlist on spotify called "Diamond City Radio" that is nothing but apocalyptic songs from the big band era (actual songs, not written for the game). The songs are used as background music in the game and I was shocked when i heard them and learned that they were real songs from the 40s
  21. I took two tests and they both said type 3w2
