  1. Ok thank you so much. I think we are ok then. I feel like they are doing great but sometimes I start doubting! We don't review a whole lot I think I should do it a little more, my boys love games. I also worry what would happen if I have to put them in school! I think I need to let that go! Thank you for your time
  2. Hi, I was wondering if you all could tell me when a child should know math facts addition/subtraction? My ds is almost 8 and will be going into Singapore math 2B. He does pretty good with addition but subtraction seems to be harder for him. We did multiplication and a little division in 2 A. He really likes multiplication and seems to do pretty good! He dislikes subtraction. We have done Singapore and miquon we alternate between the 2. Thank in advance. If there is a thread about this I can go to it. I did look and didn't find any.
  3. I have a 7, 5, and 3 year old the two oldest are boys! So they are on the go a lot! I just want to say at a young age I think it is more about appreciating nature! Like an acorn grows into a mighty oak! I have met many adults who never look up at the beautiful sky or admire the sunset! I want my children to see its beauty! Just being outside is enough at a young age. All 3 of mine have a notebook and even my boys will say hey I want to get my notebook and draw this and they have even learned to try and label and date it, so I get some writing out of them too! My 5 year old wrote caterpillar the other day and came very close to spelling it right!
  4. Thank you ladies! I do realize not every child reads so young but when I read that it makes me question weather I'm doing something wrong. It is nice to read that this is ok! Thanks again
  5. I have a question about my ds and his reading, he turned 7 in July. We are doing My Fathers World Adventures and we really like it. As for his reading I guess I just worry about if we should be doing more. He completed MFW 1st grade which has the phonics and seemed to do ok. He just has not gotten smooth with his reading. Now this is my oldest so I don't know what to expect, but I read about children reading on their own at 3 or 5 and it makes me worry a little. I have always read to my children and this child loves to be read to and never has any problem comprehending things! But I just don't know how to get him reading smoothly and if he tries to read on his own he questions everything, which I think is his confidence. He is reading the nature reader book 1 from Christian liberty press with my help. He picked up Nate the Great Halloween hunt and we are reading it but I have to say he struggles a little but wants to continue, which I admire. I guess I just wonder is this normal? Is there something else I should do as far as phonics? Right now we are doing MFW Adventures, FLL 1, WWE 1, and Spelling by Sound and Structure. With spelling I have been thinking about changing to AAS its not that we hate it but just not sure about it. I read to him everyday and he reads to me everyday. Thank you in advance!
  6. Thank you so much for responding! I think we will try it and see how it goes! I'm always worried about doing too much or too little sometimes I drive myself crazy just thinking about it!
  7. I was wondering if it would be too much to do WWE 1 and Adventures? I plan on doing FLL with MFW which is another question I have I started FLL 1 last year but did not finish it because my main focus was for him to learn to read so should I just pick up where we left off or continue to FLL2? He just turned 7 about a week ago. I really like WWE and FLL but I'm not sure about WWE and Adventures, thinking it may be too much writing? He doesn't mind to write but I don't wont to burn him out. I also have a 5 year old and a soon to be 3 year old! Thanks so much for your time!
  8. I have not read all of the posts but I just want to say I didn't realize a child could fail K. When I was in K we had to color and color in the lines the best we could, know our phone# and address, know our ABC's I don't remember anything about letter sounds, basic math patterns adding small digits, etc. That is all I remember! I was 4 when I started and I did fine. I would not have started my son at 5 he was very wiggly he has a July birthday, so I guess if I would have started him at 6, but he was already reading CVC words! I'm glad we are homeschooling! I have seen my nieces work from K and they do write a lot more than what I would think, and a lot of them are reading CVC and CVCC words. Homework is almost a daily thing, which I think is so odd they are there from 7:45-3:15! But they do get to play outside 2 times a day for 15 mins. each! I guess that's good from what I hear! My ds would be very cranky! He loves being outside most of the day!
  9. Thanks again, its just nice to read that this is ok! I know it may seem silly but this is my first child and I really don't know what to expect! And he doesn't like early readers he usually stops reading and looks at me and says can we just read something that makes sense! Sometimes I have to giggle because I feel the same way! He really doesn't like some of the Dr. Seuss books for this reason, he likes a story! On the other hand I just want to say I feel so blessed to experience this with him, sometimes it is frustrating for him or me but what an awesome feeling when they pick up on things. A couple months ago he picked up a Mo Willems book and read it to his younger brother and sister and when that happens it makes me smile and feel blessed! If you read this far thanks for reading!
  10. Thank you ladies! I have notices he doesn't like fiction as well either, he seems to love books about animals, insects, snakes, etc. I don't know why I didn't think about this until I read the comments! I think I will try the some science books and we have the frog and toad books he just doesn't seem to get into them! I really feel like he will get there I'm just stressing too much! Thank you for your comments!
  11. My ds is 6 will be 7 and he has completed the phonics 1st grade in My Fathers World. He did really well with it and can sound out about any word depending on his mood! Sometimes he might sound out something crazy but if I remind him of the rules he usually gets it. My question is how long does it take for them to build stamina? Like the book A Fly Went By, he can read it but it seems like he gets tired easy and doesn't want to continue. Is this normal? I feel like it will just take time and we just need to read everyday, but I would feel better if someone could tell me its ok! I'm also having a hard time finding books for him. He loves Mo Willems books but some of them just don't seem to challenge him enough. Also he doesn't seem to enjoy reading unless its something he likes which I'm having a hard time finding. He loves to be read to a lot and I have noticed he enjoys reading signs as we go to places, but finding books that interest him is tricky. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!
  12. I always like to think of Albert Einstein! He was a late bloomer and if I remember right he didn't start reading until 8 or 9! Hang in there it will click I know its stressful but it will happen.

    "Bragging"

I don't post often but I do want to say in the long run we all want what is best for our children! When I am out with other mothers I look around and I listen and sometimes its like a war amongst all of us when really it ok to do things a little different. I think its great that a child reads early but its also great if they read a little later. I don't think it determines their future, that's just my opinion. We are all in this together to help each other. I also want to add that Einstein was a late reader I think he was 8? before he started reading and some people believed he was dumb and look now what we call someone when they are smart! Last I want to add its not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings.
  14. Thank you for responding! Its so nice to get advice from others that have been there. I really appreciate everyone for taking the time to post questions or post their experience. Thanks again.
  15. I'm curious about where to go after adventures. Especially after reading all this. Adventures looks like it would be great for my ds but I don't know about ECC for the age. When we start Adventure he will be 7 July b-day, and my other ds will be 5 April b-day! Do you all think I should wait or continue and maybe wait on ECC?
  16. My ds has been wanting to do a study on birds. He seems to be fascinated with them. How in depth does adventures go and how many birds do you think it discusses? Thanks you all so much!
  17. Wow! I haven't been on here and this has really taken off! I haven't read all of the posts yet, but I will be. Thank you all so much and I want to add that I have already ordered MFW! Very excited.
  18. Thank you ladies. I think I will go ahead and do AAS 1. Ellie I may have to look at Spalding I have noticed that you mention it a lot so I'm going to have to look!
  19. We will be doing my fathers world adventures and it recommends spelling by sound and structure. I have never heard of it and was wondering if any of you have heard of or used it and what you think about the program. I just kind of figured we would go with AAS 1 but I haven't really looked into any other spelling programs. I will take any recommendations! This is for a 6 year old boy he will be close to 7 when we start. Thanks in advance.
  20. I have been doing MFW K with my ds he is 4 will be 5 in April. He has asked to do this because his brother is doing MFW 1st and I had K so we have done it. To say he loves it is an understatement! He usually wants to do all the pages in 1 or 2 settings. I would like to keep him learning but honestly he is past MFW K as far a phonics but not writing. He has a fascination with writing, he copied my ds math sheet the other day and did a fairly good job. But I think he is not ready for MFW 1st. So I don't really know what to do. I plan on doing Adventures with my other son. Do you all have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Sorry if I rambled!
  21. Thank you ladies this is very helpful. I don't have the teachers guide yet I was thinking I would try to wait for the new one but its hard! We are on week 20 of 1st so I have a little while. And Donna I don't have enough on that gift card!
  22. I know there is a lot of talk about MFW but we will be starting adventures this year after 1st and I was wondering if there is anything fun to add to adventures like games, puzzles, etc. I'm not really looking for a workbook or anything like that. I know I have to add math and LA. Just curious about some extra fun stuff to add. My ds will be close to 7 by the time we start. I know its a little early but I have a couple gift cards for Amazon that I want to use toward school! Thank you in advance.
  23. Of course I would and will be doing my own research, this just came as a shock to read! Yes I am registered with the state and yes I am in compliance. This is a homeschooling forum and I just figured I would ask here that doesn't mean that I take everything I read here as the law! There was no links above but I have already done my research, so I know what this is about! Thanks
  24. I'm just reading this so forgive me for my ignorance, but has this already been made a law what is going on. Should I expect someone to contact me about these visits. I can't say that I'm happy about this but if I have to do it to continue to homeschool I guess I would have no choice. Thanks in advance.
  25. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this out for me! Very helpful.
