  1. Thank you all. I have thought about doing the extra practice book, I just don't want to be too overwhelming. I even considered changing to CLE math. He doesn't do this with everything but I do feel like book 4A has been a big struggle, I'm not sure why. He has his math facts down pretty solid. The area and perimeter throws him I think because its a few different steps, I'm not sure. It took him a good while to get equivalent fractions down but he does have that down a lot better now. Mixed fraction throw him off and adding and subtracting fractions throw him off. I have a soon to be 4 th grader that will probably be in the same book as him and he doesn't have any trouble, that probably won't go over well with my older son. It's just weird and interesting that both of these kids are mine and they are so different! My 5 th grader is a perfectionist and he loves art, science, read aloud, geography and building things. Hates spelling and hasn't been too wild about math! I may just stick with Singapore and do the review somehow! I don't know I'm torn, he may need a different approach! I wish there was a homeschool fairy that would tell me exactly what I need to do! Thank you all!
  2. My son will be a 5th grader soon and I'm wondering about math. We have always used Singapore. I'm finding he needs to go over things a little more than what Singapore does. He needs more review. He can get it, it just takes a while and lots of review. We are finishing 4A and on the last review in the textbook he really struggled mainly fractions and area and perimeter. I've considered switching to something different but I don't want to bounce around. I just feel that he needs more review. I guess I'm wondering what you would do? He does the textbook, workbook, and the metal math in the back of the instructors guide. I considered getting the extra practice books but I'm not sure. He has always been the type that needs to go over things a little more to get it. I'm just afraid to bounce around too much, afraid I'll mess him up! Thank you for your time!
  3. Oh my goodness thank you all so much for taking the time to answer me! I truly appreciate it! I'm so excited to get started!
  4. My son has requested to learn American history and learn all the countries of the world! How would you teach all the countries of the world? He knows more than I did at his age! He also said he would like to learn about each country! I'm just not sure how to go about this. I'm not good at coming up with my own thing, I need help and a plan. This is the second year he has requested this so I'm going to try harder to do this for him. He likes history and geography! I thought about doing geography over the summer because my plan is to do Sonlight core D in this coming fall. That could change!
  5. My son loves Legos! Unfortunately we do not have a first Lego league close to us. I wish we did. Lego mindstorms looks really neat, but I'm not sure we can spend that much. I will definitely look into Edison! Thank you so much!
  6. I have a son that will be 11 and he really wants to do a robotics class! I have no idea where to begin! The area we live in does not offer anything like this. Is there something online or something I could get to help with this? I like to follow their interest when I can. He has always liked to work with his hands! I tried searching and couldn't get it to work, it may be my phone not sure. Thank you for your time!
  7. I do not think asking a 10 year old to brush his teeth and practice piano is too much! But I really do think it depends on the child, my 9 year old will brush his teeth, wash his face, comb his hair, get his clothes on, wash his breakfast plate and start on school work (work that he is able to do by himself) without me asking! But this is his personality type! He also will not lie, he is strange in that way, I admit. If he even thinks he did something wrong he will come to me! Things are very black and white to him! Now I have a 7 year old and I get the feeling he will not be this way! That's ok, we will just have to work on it, we have time! I have a 5 year old she will brush her teeth (she always asks me to watch her) she will wash her face, tries to comb her hair, and she will also wash her breakfast dishes! Again I think it depends on the child's personality! Some will struggle in certain areas. If you think about some of the things children have done in the past I think they are capable of more then what we give them credit for! Yes we do live in different times but I think we can spoon feed them a little too much! I really feel like this is a tricky area, some will be ready and some will not, so if it were me I would gradually work on it! I know a lot of kids in public school that have more expected of them than what mine do! Its good and bad all at the same time! The lying is expected from what I have read, but you need to set boundaries. I would make sure he realizes that he will get caught up in a lie and sometimes that lie can grow. I always explained it to my kids that its like the snowball effect, they do well with examples! I want to make it clear that I am not a parenting expert! Just giving my opinion! And I hope my 9 year doesn't start lying, since I have been bragging on him! Good luck, I hope you find a way to figure this out! We are all really in this together. I hope I don't sound snarky, that's not my intention. I think sometimes we are too harsh on others and things are hard to explain online.
  8. Thank you so much for posting the video! I think my ds would do much better with the discussion! This was super helpful! Thank you so much
  9. Thank you for the video I will be watching that. For the studied dictation, does this mean let him look at it and to break it up in chunks? I'm sorry for not knowing, I never heard of dictation until I started homeschooling!
  10. Sorry I have another question! My ds is 9 (July) and he did WWE2 last year we stopped at week 28. The reason I stopped is because he was having a hard time dictating those sentences! Some are pretty long. I have tried to pick back up on week 28 but the struggle is still there. He does dictation in spelling (AAS3) and we are also doing the dictation in FLL3. We both really like FLL3, for some reason he just loves having his own book and all that! Anyways, the only thing he struggles with is the dictation, he can do narration without much problem. He has always been good at telling the story back sometimes too much of the story but he has even got better at that. So I'm wondering if I should go on or if I should look into something else? I'm not sure what I should do. Thank you all for your time!
  11. Thank you all for your feedback! Thanks ElizabethB I will be looking into you link!
  12. Thank you. It's funny you say your son likes legos, mine does too! He builds some interesting things with great detail! I read to them everyday, I love reading! I will look into your suggestions. Thank you!
  13. Hello, my ds just turned 9! He is able to read pretty good but he has issues with being smooth! He tries but just can't seem to get it down. Sometimes he sounds robotic, its a little hard to listen to (I would never tell him that)! As far as reading he seems right on target (knowing what the words are), he does skip words occasionally, words like of, the, and, etc. He is my first so I'm wondering if I have done something wrong? We did My Fathers World for phonics and I didn't think he needed anything else but now I'm wondering. He enjoys reading what he wants to read! He doesn't like to read out loud, I feel this is important so I have him read to me everyday. He is able to comprehend what he reads out loud and to himself. He likes to read by himself. The skipping words and flow of the reading is what worries me. He doesn't change his voice much at all! A lot of times I will stop him and tell him how he needs to change his voice, this frustrates him. Maybe I shouldn't be worried I don't know. Please excuse my ignorance on this subject! Thank you for reading!
  14. I have noticed there isn't a lot out there for teaching sign language. My kids and I would like to learn. Thank you for the suggestions.
  15. I think MFW K is such a sweet program. My boys still remember facts about the different animals. Some would say it seems week in math and I have heard some say its more like preschool. I think it depends on what approach you want!
  16. I just want to say that it sounds like you are doing a fantastic job! If I was you I would just continue with your plan! I have an 8 year old son he is just now reading things like Kingdom of Wrenly, some Nate the Great, and Notebook of Doom! So your 8 year old is doing fantastic! Also I think its great that your husband is concerned, but continue with your plan and keep her love of reading alive!
  17. Thank you all so much for your help. I am going to order it for this fall!
  18. Thank you so much for responding! I wanted something different but felt like the whole package was too expensive. I feel better now just getting the enrichment guide. Thank you for your time.
  19. I have a quick question I was wondering can I just get the kindergarten enrichment guide and the craft book or would that not work. I don't think I want the whole program. I have MFW Kindergarten and also 1st from my boys going through it, but I want to change things up a little. I just really want it to be a fun year for my dd. This will probably be the last time I do k. I already have a Sonlight P 4/5 too! Just wondering if I can get the enrichment guide and what else would I need to go with it? Thanks.
  20. I don't want to derail this post but I read that they need to know their math facts. We just finished Singapore 2B, my boy knows the math facts that they want him to know but he is not even close to having them down to 15! Is this something that I missed somewhere? Sorry for my ignorance he is my first born and math is scary to me anyways. I am ashamed to say I don't even have my facts memorized. I plan on my children knowing theirs, hopefully! Thanks in advance.
  21. My ds did Rod and Staff last year and he started to cry every time I pulled out the rod and staff spelling book! I liked it ok but for him it was hard and he is not a natural speller. We are working through AAS 2 right now and will go into 3 soon. He is doing much better, no more crying! I think it really just depends on the child! I don't feel like it is really that time consuming. My son doesn't like the letter tiles he thinks they take too long but I have found it helps him to slow down and segment the words, before he was always leaving out a letter but he is starting to pick up on it a lot better.
  22. Thank you so much! It is exciting to see him doing this I was feeling like we might never make it to this point! it makes me feel better to ask, thanks again.
  23. I have a question about my 8 year olds reading, it might be a silly question but I'm going to ask. He started reading The Notebook of Doom and Dragon Masters books and he loves them. I just let him read them alone, is this ok. He does read to me during school time, but I cant be right with him while he is reading these books I have 2 other kids. He finished the Dragon Master book in a day! He was able to tell me about it and seemed to do a pretty good job explaining it. My problem is what if he is not reading some of the words correctly, is this ok? Again this may be silly but I had to ask! He is my oldest and I am just super excited that he picked a book to read! Maybe I will have a book lover after all! Thanks for your time.
