  1. Has anyone else used this textbook? I have decided to use it this year because it is written directly to the student (which I love), but am struggling with how to determine reasonable pacing. I definitely have my kiddos move at their own pace, but find giving them something to shoot for works better than not. In your experience, how long is reasonable to cover each concept? Does each "part" equal a lesson? There are 72 parts plus 13 tests plus 6 lessons in Appendix A, which yields approx 90 days. Perhaps each part is supposed to take 2 days? Any help you can give is appreciated!
  2. Thank you for letting me know... I guess we will have to think ahead to what she'll move into next year!
  3. Can anyone familiar with MOH tell me if there is a plan for vol IV? My daughter loves this series and it looks like it ends with vol III (1707?!) Thanks!
  4. Amber, I actually logged on looking for help.. I have the pre math-it book, but at a very early point, it ceases to make sense to me :) I will tell you how it starts. Basically, play dominos - start with a double and then play by normal domino rules. Let them play and build. When your kiddo is familiar with the dominos, basically get the blank on one side out. Let him count the other side and then start showing them to him until he can tell you what the number is with a short look. It's actually pretty amazing how fast they can look and say "7" or whatever. Then go through all the dominos, with your kiddo giving numbers on both sides until he can give both correctly with a short glance. After that, I am lost and looking for some help with the instructions :) Stacy
  5. I know that Hewitt and My Fathers World have lesson plans written for homeschoolers using rosetta stone for high school credit. I am hoping someone who has used these will tell me whether or not it was worth it. I have version 3 Chinese... they have a full year curriculum for scholastic credit, but it's hard to tell from what's written if it's high school level or not. The rainbow resource blurb says completing one level is worth a year of high school... do I need lesson plans, or is the plan given by rs enough? Please ease my confusion! thanks :)
  6. Hi! I am hoping some of you are familiar with the P&R Publishing "guides for students and teachers" for various books like Little Princess, Hans Brinker, etc. I bought them and then realized there are no answers for the comprehension questions, which is fine if I happen to have time to read the book :001_huh: Do any of you know if there are answers available or do I just have to stay up late and find my own?! thanks!
  7. Ravin, thanks for your response. I can tell you know what you're talking about because you have nailed who my kid is! We've had intermittent conversations about how to study, how to pick out the important stuff and write it down so you can learn it later; and yes, ask for help!! A few months ago, I was exasperated when I found out he had spent 2 hours doing math because he couldn't figure something out. And, I think he does not apply himself all the time... time management, totally right there too. Again, not too long ago, he had been in his room all morning doing schoolwork and what was completed? English. He finally admitted he had been birdwatching most of the time. Over the summer, we'll review this stuff.. studying, knowing when you are stuck, no half hearted efforts, planning your day... I kept thinking, is he doing too little, too much, too dull, too overwhelming? thanks for the encouragement; if all he needs is some slight handholding to get his brain on a straighter path, I can handle it. thanks!!
  8. who doesn't always seem so smart? I've got a 7th grader who works independently; standardized test scores off the chart; I know he's bright, but not a lot of common sense or "street smarts." His school work peaks and valleys, some math tests all correct, some D material! Doesn't do great all the time in grammar, but every question on the ITBS was correct in that area. I'm trying to figure out if this is a common pattern, maybe I should take a different approach (now lots of reading, plus texts that he can self study in), I don't know, just wondering if there was something I should be doing differently since it seems like I'm dealing with 2 different kids at times! thanks for any words of wisdom...
  9. Michelle, thanks; it did not appear that either gave writing instruction, but I guess I was hoping I was wrong so that there would be one less thing for me to do! However, I did notice quite a bit of vocabulary and root words as I looked through the units. Do you feel like it covers enough, or do you use separate vocab materials (like vocab from classical roots?) thanks!
  10. I am planning on using CLE 7 and Lightning Lit 7 together next year. My question is this: Will that provide enough writing instruction and vocabulary development? I was thinking of using Writing Strands and Vocabulary from Classical Roots as well, but after looking at the materials from CLE and Hewitt, realized it might be overkill. I want my 7th grader to be well educated, but not burnt out :) Can anyone share their experience with this? thanks so much!
  11. January seems like a good time to make changes... you ladies are awesome! Thanks for willingly sharing your experiences and opinions; I have hope for reading/literature... and a little validated that although R&S writing instruction is solid, it's just not scheduled frequently enough. Heavy sigh of relief over here... thanks so much! OKS
  12. A week ago, I was totally stressed about this... thanks for giving me this info, I feel like I have some direction now. So, can I ask you some details? I have a 2nd grader... I am thinking next year (3rd grade)starting R&S English (like I did my other 2), but keeping reading on whole books, discussing and writing summaries, and then adding CLE Reading in grade 4, with part of the year for whole books - sound ok? or does skipping CLE 3 make it difficult? I have a 5th grader... she is currently finishing the 4th grade R&S readers (I started them halfway through the year last year). I have added some whole books for her to read, but not much - which I don't like. Based on your experience, should I pull R&S, put her in CLE 5th as soon as I can; or wait till next year and put her in CLE 6th with whole book studies filling out the year? Finally, I have a 7th grader.. and I did not do right by this kid! He loves to read, and he has read a lot of books, writtten book reports, etc., till this year. I started him on R&S Reading this year... for some reason I started him on level 5 - I think it seemed where he was at based on the Scope & Sequence. I also planned on using the Covenant Home Curriculum Readers Guide with Robinson Crusoe and Captains Courageous. I knew he needed structure, but I am not happy with where he is at. I love Lightning Lit after looking at the samples. Again, based on your experience, should I immediately go to LL7 and CLE 7 and pull the plug on my "plan"? One other, slightly related, question... I know R&S Grammar is supposed to give them writing instruction, but quite honestly, we are in R&S 7 and I still don't see it. I have been thinking of starting a writing program, something like Writing Strands with all of them, but wonder if maybe I am just jumping the gun and I should wait R&S out. Sorry about dumping every ounce of anxiety about this on you... thanks for the help! OKS
  13. Jennie, thanks also for your help. I use CLE Math with 3 of my kiddos, and R&S English with the older 2. I started using the R&S Reading for the older 2 this year, but I am not sure it is doing more than comprehension. May I ask why you use R&S 4 and then switch to CLE rather than just starting out with CLE Reading and sticking with it? Again, thanks for sharing what you do! Stacy
  14. Julie, thanks so much - I love Hewitt's Lightning Lit! This looks like what I think I was searching for. Can I ask what you do with your kiddos literature wise for the younger kids. It seems like all the literature helps for the younger grades are only comprehension - am I incorrect in thinking they can go beyond that in Upper elementary, and if so, do you have a suggestion? And, is there a way to get a Hewitt catalogue? thanks again... Stacy
  15. I have been using English with my 7th grader since 3rd grade... but lacked the time/ability to do reading on my own, so I started using R&S Reading, in order to catch comprehension and other reading "skills" with it. What I am lacking, though, is some literature study. I don't want to overwhelm my kids with work, but I want them to learn about plots and conflicts, etc, and at this point, they don't seem to be getting that from R&S Reading. Can anyone help? Does this come into play at some point, or do I need to "add" literature study on my own?? thanks!
