  1. My 13-yo sons and I watched this recently, and it was wonderful. We even watched the extras which included footage of the "real" people. It was very inspiring and had a great message about the value of education. We are a conservative family, so I watched the movie first. There were only two scenes I fast-forwarded for my boys, but they really weren't too bad. There is some language, too, FYI. Jacklyn
  2. in about the same time frame as you. I checked out two of the umbrella schools in our area (Auburn), and they were quite intensive. I'd like to find something exactly like what you are looking for. What area will you be living? Jacklyn
  3. my twin boys. I am adding in Spelling Power, especially for one who is weak in spelling. And we will continue with IEW for writing. Jacklyn
  4. my son has been playing LL for six years (in fact, he just found out tonight that he finally made the All Stars team!). He has had a variety of coaches--most all of them good. They take a lot of flack from parents, but I have always worked hard to keep my mouth shut because I know they are *volunteers* trying to do their best to help the kids. This past season has been the toughest we have seen--coaches being threatened by parents, players/coaches/parents exhibiting poor sportsmanship, etc. I wish all LL's had a coach like your husband. Our son would have been honored to play under him. Thanks for sharing your great story. And a Happy Father's Day to your dh! Jacklyn
  5. but he had no problems. He does tend to have sensitive skin, and he doesn't like creams or ointments when he has irritations. He often has reactions to the band-aids that doctors use. For treating the irritation, he does best with the greasy A&D Ointment (not the white kind). If you think your son is having a reaction, you could try Benadryl (with the dr's approval, of course). Sorry I'm not much help. Your little one has my sympathy, and I hope you find a solution so he can finish the testing. Jacklyn
  6. how you are liking Lial's for Pre-Algebra and Algebra? Was the Pre-Algebra necessary. We have also used MUS all along, but will probably make the change at that level. What made you decide on Lial's and then Jacob's with all the programs that are out there to choose from? How was the transition? Thanks for your help! Jacklyn (AKA Jackie, too!)
  7. I appreciate your review of the two programs. My boys aren't crazy about grammar/lit/etc. so perhaps LLATL will be better for them. Regardless, I already plan to continue with our grammar program and spelling program. I have one boy who is a great reader and the other is a good reader. So I think the Green Book would work for them both (easier for me that way). I will consider LL8 next year, though, as I do want them to have exposure to a bit more "meat" when it comes to literature and literary terms/analysis. Jacklyn
  8. I'm amazed at the fact that you are using LL7 and LLATL at the same time. Do you alternate between the two? Or does your dd do both of them every day? If you *had* to choose, which one would you go with? I'm glad to hear the grammar is beefed up some in the Green Book. How do you like the books used? Thanks again, Jacklyn
  9. I looked it over very thoroughly and can't wait to get started! What I noticed is that the directions tell you what kind of paper to print the projects on. Of course, you could always use plain white. But for some of the projects, they would recommend cream color (looks more aged!), or sometimes colored paper, but again it would be optional. I think if you get the program in advance, you could decide on anything that might need to be printed out before your trip. You could keep it in a file folder or such and have it ready to go when you are. In my opinion, the price for the Time Traveler CD's is very reasonable. Have a nice trip! Jacklyn
  10. I am thinking of using LLATL for my 3rd grader (yellow book) and my 7th graders (green book) next year. Do you have experience with either one of these? I am most concerned for my 7th graders (twin boys, age 12). I've been able to look at the yellow book, but not the green--except for the samples on-line. I noticed you had a 14 yo using Lightning Lit 8. How are you liking it? I was considering LL7 for my boys, instead of LLATL. Will you be using LLATL for your 14 yo next year? Thanks for your help! Jacklyn
  11. for posting. I printed out quite a few to use with my youngest learners. Do you know if they have anything on animal habitats? Jacklyn
  12. Fraternal twin boys, age 12. I also have dd-age 7 and ds-age 5. Best wishes! Jacklyn
  13. for the younger grades, I think it is not necessary. However, I have found it helpful for the older grades. It makes checking the work easier, and sometimes I've needed to know the answer! HTH, Jacklyn
  14. There won't be the HUGE crowds like for the actual race, though. I do all my shopping in Daytona, right on Int'l Speedway, and I never avoid it except for the BIG race. Then again, I don't travel there on the interstate. But I think it will be OK for meeting your friends. The next race is on Thursday. Jacklyn
  15. It looks like you should be free and clear. There may be a few lingering fans and some of the crews leaving. But as far as I can tell, after tonight's race the next big thing is the 500 on the 17th. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't pay much attention to these things, but I should! Jacklyn
  16. We've been to all the "special" nights at Disney (since we live close by), and I think the Pirates and Princesses Party is the best! DO get there early. You can get in at 4:00, you just have to go to an entrance over on the far right-hand side. It is important to do this, as the hours go by SO quickly. We went this summer, and they had the stations with candy. We don't waste much time on that--I mean, you can get candy anywhere! But do get in a good spot for the fireworks. They are the best! Try to be in front of the castle or nearby (we found this was a good time to get a bite to eat and find our "spot"). The weather right now is tricky. It could be rather warm at 4:00, but it cools off quickly when the sun goes down. So bring jackets, and maybe even a change of clothes for the kids. Oh, and the strollers were free! So get one (or even two). I've never had anything stolen from a stroller at Disney, and we've gone several times. The music near some of the treasure spots can be really loud. Most rides you can walk right on, and go over and over again. Be sure to check out "Laugh Floor" if you haven't done it. My kids loved it. We like to ride the monorail over because it's faster, but then take the ferry back to the parking lot to just relax and rest our feet before driving home. If you are a little patient, you can go to the front of the line for the monorail and sit in the cool "pointy" part with a great view. I guess that's about all I can think of. Have a wonderful time and say "Hello" to Mickey! Jacklyn
  17. that's the main thing I don't like about the new format. It also makes it hard to find old posts because they aren't where I expect them to be. Jacklyn
  18. Sometimes little children visiting are afraid of her because she bounces like a spring. She will jump right up in their faces, and even though she isn't big she has some claws. She could scratch you up pretty good, but not intentionally. Generally we try to tell children to ignore her and she'll ignore you. But if you run from her she'll think you're playing and want to run after you. Otherwise, she is a real sweetheart. She has never hurt anyone--and she's around all kinds of people, big and small. She is not the Alpha dog, as they say. She certainly knows who is boss (me!). It would be nice if we could get another dog for her to have a companion and play-mate. As it is, the only other dog she has here is our 16-yr-old 8 lb mutt Trixie. Needless to say, SHE is the other boss around here (and doesn't take kindly to our JR's attempts at play). I guess all breeds have their "menaces", but I think it is pretty safe to say that most JR's are of a sweet, albeit lively, temperament. Jacklyn
  19. I was very concerned as we just did the same thing--landscaped our entire backyard. The dog was going to GO if she tore it up! Amazingly, she hasn't been digging (and we've had it for over 6 months). She did dig a couple times in the areas that are mulched, but she never hurt the plants or the sod. Since we have this wall, I'm guessing she has effectively eliminated our mole population and maybe that's why she doesn't dig anymore. Right now we are out of town, and she is staying with friends. They took her to the dog park, and they sent us a picture of her: head buried in a hole she dug looking for moles! I guess that's a good way for her to get it out of her system. Jacklyn ;)
  20. We have had our Jack Russell for about two years. She belonged to an older lady who just couldn't keep up with her. She is a real sweet-heart, but her energy and her barking drive me crazy. The first night she was at our home, my dh said he didn't think she slept at all! Now she is pooped out at night, and that is when I love her best. We have had to learn to keep the doors closed because she will take off (and she's SO fast!). She gives no heed to the road, just nose to the ground and off she goes. Fortunately, we have a stone wall around our back yard, so she has a safe place to play. When we first got her, she dug holes all over our yard and would bring us moles for presents. I'm guessing she would easily have been able to dig under a regular wooden fence. If I could change only one thing about her it would be the barking. And, from talking to other JR owners, they don't all bark. Maybe you will be lucky and get a non-barker? Also, we've never taken her to obedience lessons, but we should have. I would highly recommend it, especially if you are getting a puppy. Most of all, make sure he/she has space to run and burn that energy. We just got ours a new harness called "Gentle Leader" which helps keep her from tugging and pulling on walks. The jury is still out, but I think it will make walking her much more pleasant. Enjoy your little Energy Bundle. They are fun! Jacklyn
