  1. Sleeplessnights: How do you assign grades? Based on age or? What happens if a kid is ahead in certain areas? What grade to use then? I like the way you have spread it all out. Koerarmoca: Math, reading, and bible are the only curriculum we follow. We borrow a lot of books from the library focusing on one theme per visit. Plus whatever my daughter picks or is interested in.
  2. Thanks for all the responds! Given that she is 5 I'm trying not to overwhelm her with too much. We are taking our time working through math making sure she understands. Reading is where she is so ahead I don't know what's next. Technically we aren't done with OPGTR but she knows the words at the end of the book. She's just an over achiever and loves to learn . We are in Chicago so we are stuck inside during our bad weather.
  3. It makes sense to stagger new material/ curriculum but proceed with next level currently using. It's my first time homeschooling full time and also committed to forgoing school kindergarten. I'm trying to think ahead. Thanks for the answers.
  4. I have a 5 yr old and so far we only do OPGTR, rightstart math B, some copy work, and extracurricular activities. I want to start adding other subject but am wondering if I should wait until fall. I plan on schooling year round and wonder if I should start now. Would that mess up a schedule down the road?
  5. Here's a link to find your officials. https://www.votervoice.net/mobile/ILFI/Address
  6. Sorry forgot to mention on my iPhone the same thing happens on reading eggs.
  7. I believe that reading eggs runs on flash player. iPads don't support flash unless you buy an app that will help.
  8. Thanks for the response ladies!! That's great about telling her the rules when she makes a mistake. Lately if she makes a mistake we review that lesson again to refresh our memory. I just found out about McGuffy's readers and found them free online. Shannon I'm from Chicago too.
  9. Thanks for helping me out with this. I'm not impatient to finish the book. I am just wondering if I should have her memorize every "rule" or sound combination. In order that when she comes upon a word she doesn't know she will remember all the combinations from the book. We do go through a lot of lessons per day and I'm afraid of not cementing all the sounds to memory.
  10. We are on section 16 of the book and it seems my daughter knows a lot if not most of the words. She even knows some of the words at the end of the book. Is the point to have them reading or to learn every possible sounds combination and memorize it? I'm struggling with which direction to go. Thanks in advance.
  11. Thank you all for the suggestions. Ill will just keep working at her level and taking our time. She's my oldest child so the accelerated learning is a real surprise. That bible suggestion is great thanks.
  12. She knows how to form her letter and can copy 3-4 sentences do you think a handwriting program would still be good for her? She doesn't love writing but she gets it done. We read a lot of library books and we could incorporate more science books. SOTW sound good and brief and could always add more library books. Is the activity worth it for 1st graders or just come up with my own? I looked into FLL and WWE but honestly everything just started sounding the same. Would both be needed for 1st? The thing I liked about MFW was that it integrates bible stories. I have looked but haven't found a separate bible curriculum. It's not the deciding factor in selecting a curriculum but its one less thing. Looks like ill be researching different curriculums at different levels. I want to walk the line between challenging her and overwhelming her. Thanks for your input its greatly appreciated. I never heard of homeschooling until recently and have no one to ask these things.
  13. I plan to work at a faster pace through MFW since she's already reading and math. Do you piece together material from different sources? Thanks
  14. I finally took the plunge and decided to homeschool my daughter for kindergarten. I've been part time homeschooling her on days off from her pre school (no longer attends). I'm struggling on deciding whether to buy curriculum based on age or where she is academically. I worry about content in material as she is only 5yrs old but reads at a higher level. I've gone ahead and ordered MFW K to finish off this year but need ideas for next year. Currently we are doing RS B (lesson 33), OPGTR (lesson 136), AAS (step 18), and some copy work from what we read. What is everyone's experience with this? Thanks
  15. Hello everyone, I'm a new member here so forgive me if this was posted already. I've been lurking here for the last year and have really learned a lot. Just want to pass on a great resource I came across through my local library. It's a website called tumblebooks. It says its for iPad but I've used it on my iPhone but may just work through regular Internet. It has a huge list of ebooks, read-alongs, games, language learning among other things. Hope someone can use it. http://www.tumblebooks.com/library/iPad/home_tumblebooks.asp
