  1. Thank you ladies😉 I am definitely going to have her vision properly checked and will also have her use the terms properly orally and get her graph paper. If this doesn't help, of which I am very hopeful, I will also have her evaluated. I should mention that I have odd eye issues, like only one of my eyes focus at a time, they do not work together.
  2. I love that idea of writing the number in expanded form, as it would reinforce the place value and would separate the two numbers so switching should be much less likely. I will try this tomorrow with her and let you know how it goes. Thanks so much ladies for your help.
  3. Thank you for your quick replies, we have been writing at the same time😉 I have wondered if she has a mild disability, but with her hard work and patience I have wondered if it would be worthwhile to have her evaluated as she has grown exponentially in her reading, writing, and spelling. We had her vision checked and she was fine, but it was only a basic exam; so she could switch things visually and I will have that immediately looked into as they may be able to give exercises to try.
  4. We have used both terms carrying and regrouping, and she really does understand the why behind the process, yet will write the answer backwards. What I am wondering is why she switches numbers despite telling me the correct answer. This is irritating her a lot as she doesn't know why she doesn't see herself doing it until later.
  5. I also should note that she does this while tutoring as well. She will even tell me correctly, yet write the numbers backwards. She would have perfect scores in math if she didn't mentally switch numbers.
  6. Thank you ladies for your quick replies. We have used blocks and many other manipulative and she understands concepts well as we have supplemented Rod and Staff with Singapore textbooks and tons of hands on activities. Math is actually my strength and I love teaching it. What is confusing my is why after all of this tutoring she is carrying the wrong number- such as carrying the three when her first partial answer is thirteen not thirty-one. Sorry for not making my question very clear, and thank you for helpful replies.
  7. Hi ladies, Please forgive the writing issues, as I am writing this from a kindle. I think I should give some background as it may give you all some indications of what may be going on. I am trying to decide whether to have her evaluated or if this is normal behavior for her age. My daughter is ten and going to move on to fifth grade this fall. When she was four she was reading Bob books, counted to one hundred, and participated in Bible quizzing successfully. After she had her kindergarten shots she regressed majority in all academic areas; she began having issues with memory and acted as if she couldn't read anymore. I couldn't get her to quote John 3:16 for months of practicing at age five and started to work on letter sounds all over again. It took her another whole year to read Bob books. She mixed up similar letters for another year and had trouble learning new phenomes, so we took it slow. I should state she worked hard and is a very sweet and compliant child. At the end of third grade she could finally read well enough for Dr.Seuss books. She spent the second semester of fourth grade doing CLE reading 4, and she did very well. It seems like she never had issues with reading now; I am so proud of her hard work. She can now memorize verses as a family, so that issue has resolved itself as well😊 The issue we are still having is confusing to me. She completed CLE math 1 perfectly in k so I thought her real issues were reading correlated; but as she has progressed in math she continues to write numbers backward when regrouping in addition or multiplication. She easily learned all of her math facts, has no issues comparing numbers, and as long as there isn't any regrouping gets addition and multiplication correct. She has had issues following how to do long division- she will skip steps and when carrying she will carry the one and write the tens almost every time. I have taught her how at least a hundred times, I even showed her how to write the number above her problem so she can check her work, but it hasn't helped. She used Rod and Staff math 2-4 and once problems are marked wrong she will find her mistake. She says she has checked the problems twice, but never sees her mistakes. What do you ladies think is going on? Thanks for reading this long post😊
  8. My son is also doing Happy Handwriting and loving it as well! My children have also enjoyed the Cheerful Cursive, and get excited with each new 'person' they get introduced to. I have allowed my son two days on occassion, but have also wanted to take our time through the book as each day they review all of the previous letters. I hope he continues to enjoy handwriting. We all need days when we know we picked the right curriculum for our kids, as it is encouraging to know we are getting some things right. :hurray:
  9. I have always enjoyed reading your post Crystal, thank you for taking your time. I am excited!
  10. I think after all of this discussion and looking one more time at MFW High School that I will simply add BJU Cultural Geography to his freshman year as our family will be studying it again then- we will most likely do MFW in entirety with electives. I am excited. We have extra money that we don't get often so I was planning for a large purchase. I will just buy all four years with electives at once just to have it on the shelf. The more children we have the less money- go figure  and we keep adding sweet little ones, so I think purchasing now is best for our family. I have loved every year with MFW. Thanks so much ladies for your help.
  11. Oh, he has also done Beautiful Feets a history of science and read the early american and geography books on his own.
  12. Thank you all for all of your help in making these decisions. I am mainly looking at my oldest for the next few years and hope that my children can each follow similar history/literature paths for high school as I have a very limited income. Here is what he has done so far. MFWK, LHFHG, MFW1, BLHFHG, MFW ECC, PHFHG, MFW CTG, and this year we are doing MFW RTR. He has also read tons of history books for fun across all time periods, his favorite thing to do is to read. I wanted to allow him to do the Notgrass America the Beautiful the next year for his 7th grade year while my next two youngest complete MFW Adventures. My fourth grade girl would also read through the american girl books in addition to Adventures for fun. They would be first and fourth grade, the first grader at that time would definitely be ready for it, as I think he could do it now. I love the history, bible, and state study and am excited that these two will not miss out on those bible lessons! The following year I would have an 8th grader, 5th grader, and 2nd grader- plus a K, Toddler, and maybe another baby  . So we would do Notgrass Uncle Sam and Me for the older two plus geography workbooks for all students. For science for the youngers I would do Considering God's Creation. I would be doing MFW ECC the following year when I would have a 9th grader, 6th grader, 3rd grader, 1st grader, and PreKer who would do MFWK so the 9th grader could participate in doing ECC by doing reports on the countries. I will also have him do Mapping the World by Art/ BJU cultural Geography to complete his high school geography credit. I am going to have to really think about what to do after that for my oldest as the youngers will be doing the cycle after that. Thank you for the links and ideas!
  13. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Our family presently uses My Fathers World and have really enjoyed it, but since I really liked the looks of Notgrass for both world and American we have been considering something different for high school. We also wanted them to be solid on geography and wanted to make a year to focus on physical and cultural geography. I have contemplated on doing MFW high school and adding a geography study to it as an elective. This may be the direction we go. Another option is to do Geography in the kids 8th grade year in addition to MFW, that would solve the issue of desiring Geography one more time. Would BJU cultural geography be too much for an 8th grader, and could I use that for high school credit? MFW uses the BJU text for American studies. Does anyone know how that compares to Notgrass American studies. Thanks again for your replies.
  14. Lori, Thank you so much for your indepth reply. I hadn't even evaluated the strength of the books themselves  , just figured they were strong enough as they list them as high school level, but I should have dug deeper at the titles. Oh, I should have noted that I figure my students would finish the vocabulary before high school, but if not it would be worked on until done. I may or may not continue Rod and Staff grammar, but if not I will add Critical Thinking Companies editor chief books. Here is my new plan. 9th- Geography/ A basic literature comp course- maybe BJU or Heart of Dakota as written for World Geography 10th- Notgrass world history with all of the books as extra reading/ Lightning Literature world history set for lit/comp 11th-Notgrass American history with all of the books as extra reading/ Lightning Literature american set for lit/comp 12th- Notgrass Economics and Government/ Lightning Lit- Speech and Lightning Literature British set for lit/comp Thanks so much. Does this look better?
  15. I really like the looks of Notgrass for our upcoming (three years away- ha ha) high school students, but have heard that the English portion is lacking in vigor in a few areas. Do you believe that adding Rod and Staffs English (7 and 8) would be enough added writing and grammar? Do you think adding four literature guides to go with books referenced in each level would be suffice? My children read by the bucketful so I have no worries about overloading that area at all- I bought a kindle to save my savings- but it has become our families new addiction. I already use Rod and Staffs English levels 2-6 with additional writing which varies up until 8th grade. I plan to use LLATL for their 7th and 8th grade levels for the literature studies and writing focus. Here is my plan, please tell me what you would add or change. I am wanting to have literary analysis and writing as the main focus of my students high school years with a continued review of grammar. I will also add Vocabulary from the Classical Roots until finished. 7th/8th- Notgrass Exploring America and Uncle Sam and You with the booklist/ Learning Language Arts through Literature for literature analysis, writing(to add to Rod and Staff), vocabulary, and anything extra/ Rod and Staff 6 9th- Geography-Not sure what to use yet. May use Heart of Dakotas Geography program in entirety, but still undecided. Uses half of Rod and Staff 7 10th- Notgrass World History with book studies/ Rod and Staff 7(half unused by 9th grade year)/ Progeny Press study guides for a couple books in Notgrass 11th- Notgrass American History with book studies/ Rod and Staff 8 (first 1/2)/ Progeny Press guides for a couple books in Notgrass 12th- Notgrass Economics and Government with LLATL British Literature and Rod and Staff 8 (last 1/2)
