I hired a tutor for about 6 months (Spell to Write and Read). She gave extremely specific advice like this, "your loop there goes all the way from the baseline to the top line and should lean a little" or "make sure the loops are all of a similar size, not some big and others small- can you draw three in a row?". She would have the boys trace it with her holding the top of the pencil and driving.
I thought I had hired her because I wasn't sure how to use SWR, but actually I learned a lot about how very specific I needed to be instead. It helps them look carefully at their work, too.
Their writing for school is all in cursive at this point, and I have to say they both write pretty well.
We also spot-check the alphabet every once in a while and sometimes have them re-write a word or letter if it's wonky during their spelling time.
ETA: clarity

Yes, but mine are all under age 10. When they get older I'll let them decide.
We have a no sweatpants outside the house rule, too, unless we're going to swimming. I don't do well in sports clothes/ sweatpants/ pjs day in and out. We also have a two day max wear before washing rule.

First project accomplished! We read the warnings, filled the bobbin, threaded the machine, "drew" some stuff on construction paper and sewed this bad boy out of a shirt I was recycling. Not bad for day 1!

nm- my first sentence was clearly addressed by others and I'd rather not pile on because the OP was feeling attacked.
My boys like it, but we play games with it in the car or waiting for food at restaurants, etc.
They also like it because they're young enough that they can do a lot of the work on their own. We often start with it or do it second because then they can get it done before they're tired while I clean up from breakfast.
-
Sorry about your discomfort, Jean! Hope you got a bath by hook or by crook and it helped.
We went out with that shiny stroller and immediately ran into a lost puppy. So of course that about took up the rest of the night.
Microchipping for the win!

Just thought I would update you guys as I really appreciated your input.
We finally had our appt with the pediatric neurosurgeon and we are scheduled for surgery next month. It seems it's a very miild and easily fixed kind of tether. We'll be one night in the hospital and the doc says the surgery itself will take only 30 minutes.
Loowit, we're with Dr. W and I loved how clear and patient she was with us. I was very impressed with her and her whole office has been very helpful.
We have also found a great pediatrician, recommended by the surgeon's office.
Thanks again for sharing your advice and stories.

Sad that there is a lot to copy and paste for tomorrow... but I got a few extras done as I went:
-Made my nightstand look less like a crazy homeless woman's space
-set up my new jogging stroller... and promptly ran out of daylight to use it
-mixed up new batch of laundry soap from the last of the base (need to cook a new base soon)
-put away everything from Costco right away including the literal mountains of paper goods
-went out to eat at our favorite Chinese place (which is oddly enough really run by a Vietnamese family).

Hope you all had a wonderful day. Except those of you with the flu; I hope you all just survive, have lots of help, and get well quick!
We got a neurosurgery date for our girl and it's only about a month away. Finally, clear direction from a doctor we trust.
We also survived vaccinations and cello group.
Even did reading, math and spelling.
I'm going to bed before 11pm, which is some kind of freakish record that hasn't happened in ages.
Looking forward to tomorrow. Off to find Jean's list and add mine!

Just found out that we will meet the neuro surgeon today for our toddler. Finally!!!!
Also a regular pediatric appt
And cello group
And school

I feel a bit apprehensive, and guilty for feeling so. I should really just be overjoyed and grateful. And I am, but the apprehension is really distracting.
We're in the process of finding out what the extent of our daughter's medical needs might be. The possibilities run such a wide gamut. More than that, the world will not stop so I can focus on these things. I find that exceedingly frustrating and it makes me short tempered and resentful. Thinking of the next 6 months of school, I see my future mess-ups (snappiness, self-centeredness) and don't even want to start school.
Sorry for the intense post, don't worry, we also get to go to Florida for almost a month in just a few weeks and I have a very supportive family.
-
They only get dusted because I have to wash the walls when I deep clean because the grubby little minions are incapable of navigating the house without dragging their hands along the surfaces at all times. We're hoping to move within the next year and are already starting to try to keep the place somewhat respectable-looking...
