  1. :grouphug: Best wishes, Terabith. Continuing to send good thoughts your way.
  2. So sorry to hear it, Lisa! No advice, just hugs. I feel so bad for both of you and hope for a very speedy recovery!
  3. Sigh, yes. I have DS doing some PP presentations this year. Personally, I hate PP, but DS did a terrific job with his first one, including avoiding pitfalls of PP presentations (reading the slides to the audience, etc.). I'll admit I was impressed that he included animation! G5052, I'm not familiar with Access. What does that do?
  4. I agree with this for college, for sure. Many high school writers, though, struggle with saying enough - fully developing their topic or argument. So far, DS has not fallen into the habit of "padding" for page count, so I'm not worried about that. Still, I have been giving DS page limits on some things; the U of C application questions, for example, can't be more than 2 pages. That seems to be working well for him. In the next couple of years I might assign, say, a 5-page paper, and after he submits that I'll then have him cut it down to 3. It is indeed a very useful skill to write concisely!
  5. Thanks, all. I am so glad I asked! I was working with what now seems like outdated info - that reader response was still common and frequent - so I (and DS!) will gladly back away from those and change our focus to mostly short argumentative papers and a few longer research papers. We have also been doing timed SAT prompts and untimed U of C application essays, both of which have been fun and productive. We'll continue those.
  6. Are reader responses still in vogue? Literary analysis or other persuasive papers? Is there any writing in science/math courses? And could you estimate a total page count at this point? My son is still in high school, but I want to keep an eye on what's coming and make sure I'm working on the right wavelength. Thanks for any input!
  7. Yes, and he knew about it. At some point he was deleting things, so I kept track of the minutes balance (which wouldn't tell me who he was contacting, but would at least let me know whether he used the phone). Now, we have different phones - technically smart phones, but none of us uses them for anything but calls and the rare text. I still retain the right to check, but rarely do.
  8. I heard today that, depending on the location of the seats, ticket prices are already upwards of $12,000! GO Cubs! :hurray:
  9. So glad to hear the good news!
  10. I am so sorry, purplejackmama, for you and your parents. My parents had to live through that 3 times before they passed on themselves. :( It's so awful. Many hugs to you.
  11. Still thinking of you, Terabith, and wishing you peace and comfort. Also thinking of those caring for you - may they be gentle and wise!
  12. :grouphug: I know you're walking a rough road, Wendy. Are you familiar with Denisemomof4's posts? I think I got the name right. Anyway, you may find help & commiseration there. Like you, she is a very strong parent of a really difficult kid. More hugs for you. I'm sorry it's so hard. :grouphug:
  13. Is there something else that happens away from home that he *does* want to do? Martial arts, maybe? Something that might buy you an hour, even two.... Do you know your husband's reasons for his all-or-nothing view? I'm sorry it's so hard, and so exhausting. :grouphug:
  14. Ugh, hearing hard things from the kids. I dread the day DS speaks up about all my hurtful missteps. Being a parent is hands-down the most difficult "project" I've ever undertaken ... and sometimes I've messed it up badly. Happi duck, I hope you're feeling a little less raw this morning, but either way, here are a few more hugs to get you rolling. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
  15. Terabith, I can't think of a single day of my life when I've lived up to my potential, and I have no known extenuating circumstances holding me back. Big hugs to you, and I hope you're feeling better very soon.
  16. I can't say it any better than this. Many hugs, and many, many good wishes.
  17. Has he read any Jasper Fforde? He might like the Thursday Next series especially, but the Nursery Crimes are fun, too.
  18. Agreeing with window washer (especially considering that in my neck of the woods the buildings are 40-100+ stories) and assorted human/animal waste cleanup. Adding: anything that requires being out in the weather or on the water, anything requiring physical strength/stamina, and police officer. Oh, and POTUS! I'm sure there are lots more, but I don't need to think of those to be immensely grateful for my cushy office job that comes with free heat & AC and a reasonably-comfy chair. ;)
  19. The Big Book of Christian Ethics is my guess.... ;) Heh. Now I'm imagining a surveillance chip tucked behind the DVD sleeve. Collecting data for the second edition, of course. My brain is everywhere but where it should be today.
  20. Interesting question. My first thought was to send it back, of course. But ... it *is* a hassle ... and I *would* suspect evangelizing. But ... as you say, it's a high-priced item. I guess I would still send it back, but maybe I wouldn't be in a rush to do so. And I suppose I'd make sure customer service knew it was the second time and I'm getting a little tired of supervising their warehouse for them! ;)
  21. I'm so sorry that happened! Best wishes to you & your husband, RC. And thank you, Jean, for letting us know.
  22. I don't think the sign has much, if anything, to do with the fact that Hillary is female. I think an "I support Donald" athletic supporter would convey the same pun.
  23. :( I'm sorry. It stinks when people do petty and mean things. :grouphug:
  24. This sums it up for me; I agree completely. Was this shower at the office, during work hours? Did you have food or just the gifts? I don't think there's anything wrong with her wanting to see what other people gave despite not giving anything herself. And if there was no special food that she partook in but everyone but her chipped in for, I really don't see the big deal.
