  1. Absolutely not a weird reaction. It is illegal in my state - even for a *licensed* teen driver - to have non-relative passengers (for the first year, I think). I definitely would have freaked out! I probably wouldn't say anything to the mom, but I'd tell son never to do that, and I'd never ask that mom for transport again!
  2. Just about every single day, often multiple times a day, some memory of me embarrassing/humiliating myself or doing something utterly stupid or mean or ignorant will pop into my head. And of course there are many of them (so, at least I get a little variety! ;) ). Also, a common refrain in my head is "I've lived my life all wrong." It stinks, and it's irritating and somewhat demoralizing, but I know well enough that the refrain isn't true and that everybody does stupid stuff, etc., so I'm not speeding off to therapy for it. I do know it has nothing to do with my parents or anything like that. It's just one of the many ways my brain entertains itself. It is *always* churning something - but not always something negative. ETA: I'm pretty sure I've never mentioned it to anyone IRL. Certainly not to the kid!
  3. Have you tried deleting cookies?
  4. I found this over the summer: https://gamedesignconcepts.wordpress.com/ I pasted the whole thing into a Word document and edited it down a bit. I bought all three books and printed all of the linked articles (some I couldn't find, some were not articles but game demos or whatever). We are 4 levels in, and my son is enjoying it (although he is reluctant to do ALL of the reading ... sigh). If you like, I'd be happy to send you both the master Word doc and my edited version. Just PM me your email address. Hope this helps! ETA: Ian Schreiber (the author of the blog) appears to be a Pretty Big Deal in the game design world. I believe he is currently teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology. He also has a ton of appearances on YouTube (a few of which I will assign in lieu of a midterm and final).
  5. I have adopted this method for one class this year. I am hoping it gets the point across and spreads to other note-worthy (ha) classes!
  6. Haven't read the thread yet - just wanted to mention Talk Space for a possible therapy option. I have not tried it, nor do I know anyone who has - I have only heard it exists. https://www.talkspace.com/ And here's a hug. A big one. :grouphug:
  7. What a blow. I'm so sorry, jrn.
  8. I'm so sorry, G. :grouphug: Wishing you strength and peace through the transition.
  9. I have been looking at Ursinus lately, too. I like that it's only a half-hour from Philadelphia, and it's one of the Colleges that Change Lives (although I can't recall anything specific from the book about it). When I searched this board, I found one Ursinus thread and a few other scattered posts (mostly by dotwithaperiod, IIRC), but little else. I like to check youtube for schools of interest, both "official" school videos and ones posted by others. Ursinus surprised me with the super high volume of sports and Greek videos [ETA: neither of which interest my son]. Very little about the arts or academics, from what I've seen so far. Given that it is the furthest of the schools currently on my radar, I'm thinking of letting it go, unless it somehow attracts my son's attention.
  10. That would be SO cool! Doubly cool with her name. Come on, you can hold onto her until the 21st, can't you? ;)
  11. I hadn't heard of snagajob. Thank you, we'll look into it.
  12. Thanks for the suggestion. And congrats to your son, too! A "dream" job as a first job is rare, indeed! There are stores that would fit that bill but they aren't hiring. At this point any McJob would do. There are SO few places that hire at 16 around here. :(
  13. Seconding Patty Joanna's suggestions. Honestly, after a first greeting I'd let him take the lead. And I'd focus on helping my parents. :grouphug: I love your plans for the book. That's so thoughtful and such a special gift.
  14. Congratulations to your son! Such a great milestone. May I ask what sort of job it is? Did he have to apply online? My son has also been job-hunting, but only one place out of about 20 had a paper application. Everyone else said apply online, and when he tried to do that, he couldn't get anywhere unless he agreed to accept unsolicited emails from about a dozen irrelevant organizations AND agreed to accept automated phone calls - but there was no info regarding the content or purpose of those calls. So the job hunt here is currently stalled out. :( I'm planning to send him to some independent businesses instead of chains, but there aren't many of those around anymore....
  15. Hoping today brings good news. Hugs to you & your family, RC.
  16. That's great news! I'm so happy they called and happier that he's doing well. :)
  17. I think you are wise to be concerned that he might think *you* were the ones who disappeared. Forgive my ignorance; I know nothing about foster care. But are you "allowed" to contact the bio family? Can you ask how he's doing, can you maybe request that now *you* get the two-hour weekly visit, at least as a transition period?
  18. I have only used supporthosestore.com and have only bought the stockings, so I can't help with the adhesive. Good luck!
  19. You said a long weekend, right? So 3-4 days? I'd go with bolt's list below, plus some chips and a couple cans of stuff like Hormel chili or Chef Boyardee ravioli (those can be the one-pot meal, or they can be on offer for anyone who wants them in addition or instead of whatever else). No need to make fruit salad or taco meat or your own soup or chili, unless there are dietary considerations that require scratch meals. Go for as easy-on-you as humanly possible. Kids don't want to wash dishes, let them eat the chili cold with a plastic spoon straight out of the can. Or they can survive on granola bars and apples if they want. Or even just cookies. Whatever, not your problem. I'd also aim for as few items needing refrigeration as possible. Freezing water bottles before you go lets them do double duty - they'll keep your coldcuts cold and you'll still have cool water bottles two days later without needing ice (or at least not as much). Plan to eat the cold stuff (meat & cheese, etc.) first, saving PB sandwiches and the like for the later days.
  20. Some candidates: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/255841-crosspost-why-you-should-work-on-twtm-skills-narration-dictation-outlining-etc/?hl=twtm and its companion: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/255843-crosspost-why-you-should-work-on-twtm-skills-narration-dictation-outlining-etc/?hl=%2Btwtm Edited to add title: Crosspost - Why you should work on TWTM skills - narration, dictation, outlining, etc
  21. Just saw the new update. Ray of light? I'll take it! May you soon be flooded with sunshine! :grouphug: for all of you.
  22. Three cheers! :hurray: :hurray: :hurray: Hearty congratulations to both of you! I especially love that he is already working. That's worth at least a phew or two of its own!
  23. I agree with both of you. That's what I meant by not allowing him to "keep" that notion, but I didn't make that clear. I didn't mean to suggest that he has to say right now that he wants to, just that the issue shouldn't pass under the bridge altogether without being explicitly addressed when he's in a better place.
