  1. Wow!! It is so helpful to draw this out and see that cost units can be equal while fractions of pounds of fish and veg are not. My brain needs to see it just like singapore draws it. The whole thinking key of singapore is teaching yourself to find the unit that is staying constant and keep it equal as you manipulate it to the size you need in order to compare it. Never learned this in school only now getting glimmers. Thanks for the input; it's keeping us going. Thanks to singapore my non mathy brain and kid's brains are dabbling in AOPS and I'm not afraid to send my kids farther than I went. They truly have a desire to think math.
  2. Just keep asking for help. My kids have a great algebraic understanding I never had. I've asked for help here. On the 1800 Singapore forum, and on the Singapore math forum. Sometimes it takes me a week or two.
  3. Yes 200 postcards. 4. I have the answers. I'm looking for drawn bardiagrams Singapore style as these are from Challenging Word Problems bk 6, the older edition. p. 50 #20 1/2 lb. of fish costs twice as much as 4/5 lb of vegetables. If 7/10 lb. of fish and 1/2 lb. of vegetables cost $13.70 altogether, how much more does each lb. of fish cost than each lb of vegetables? p. 50 #21 Roland had five times as many postcards as Patrick. After Roland gave 1/4 of his postcards to Patrick, Patrick gave 1/6 of his postcards to Roland. If Roland had 90 more postcards than Patrick in the end, how many postcards did Roalnd have at first?

  7. This video is on the website about planning a week. http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/plan/ You're questions are exactly how I remember starting out too. Where do I start? How do I get the most out of my limited preparation time? And, what part of the notes do you tend to use the most? Do you read all the notes extensively or do you just focus on certain sections. Choose a top priority first. A mind anchor. I go straight to the purple "Threads" pages and choose one or two top priorities for the week. I'm looking at week 23 in year 3 right now. The LG history thread says, "Learn about the Gettysburg Address and why Lincoln gave this famous speech." This is the one I would have as top priority for my first or second grader. If had a younger one who was just being introduced to The Civil War, I might choose the geography thread about what conditions soldiers fought under and a hands on activity like hard tack. There are also choices for literature and church history. When do I read more in the notes? Hmm? Ok I've chosen Why Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address? I want to be able to talk about this one point with my second grader. I only remember the speech has something to do with a cemetery. I go first to the yellow teacher notes that are World Book encyclopedia entries and refresh. If I still want more, I go to the teacher notes for the D and R level scanning just for the Gettysburg Address. With my top priority, I choose books based on my child's needs, likes, and my family's schedule for the week ( sick, car travel, making Easter Cards is already scheduled , etc) Tapestry is so flexible in the choosing of books. Remember the top priorities, and you're not going to go wrong. ( Other than your child may need you to read something aloud, or horrors!!! wants to know more!) I roughly use this line of questioning in choosing books for my LG. Which resource will cover my priority? Anything in the house already? Anything at the library? Any assigned book that happens to be used many weeks? Also if your LG is a strong reader or close to UG reading you might choose from a UG resource. What does your LG week look like? M- Read aloud after breakfast 30 min. then 3'R's, 1 hour before lunch more tapestry, salt dough map, read aloud after lunch, LG reading independently a related book from the time period fiction or non-fiction T-Read aloud after breakfast 30 min. then 3'R's, 1 hour before lunch more tapestry, timeline or vocabulary words, read aloud after lunch, LG reading independently a related book from the time period fiction or non-fiction W-Read aloud after breakfast 30 min. then 3'R's, 1 hour before lunch more tapestry, craft or finish salt dough from last week paint it?, read aloud after lunch, LG reading independently a related book from the time period fiction or non-fiction R-Read aloud after breakfast 30 min. then 3'R's, 1 hour before lunch more tapestry, discuss top priority finish any craft or map work, read aloud after lunch, LG reading independently a related book from the time period fiction or non-fiction F- maybe 3R's and grocery/ errands I hear you about picking books. I stressed way too much about it. I wanted the perfect book every time. I'm learning that books are treasures but relating with my children is priceless. Feel free to PM me, Melody
  8. The first few chapters in Genesis to me are not only God's character in video format but the substance of my faith in God's ability to save me from the punishment of sin I deserve and the future hope of a new perfect world with all evil utterly vanquished. Now, how does this play out in applying scientific discoveries. I'm researching now those 9,500 year old trees and ice layers in the glaciers Bill Nye mentioned, as well as the genetic research pointing to only one human ancestor Ken Ham mentioned. In teaching the kids, I tell them they are going to see evidence for both models of earth's history. Many other areas of science will have evidence pointing different directions especially over time. I think a good example would be the theory of what is under the Earth's crust, the core, or how Newtonian physics applies or doesn't apply in outer space. Bottom line for me personally, without a literal interpretation of Genesis, I would be left with an impotent god who didn't know his own mind.
  9. Depending on kids ages. GPB physics DVD's and lesson plans we've used with snap circuits on the side for a middle school physics
  10. http://www.hometrainingtools.com/snap-circuits-complete-student-guide/p/BK-SCGUIDE/ We made good use of these lessons. There's a teacher's answer book too.
  11. I agree counting on would be prereq also skip counting by 2, 3,4,5 can make subtraction and addition easier. Another prereq would be solving add and subtract on a number line. It's a lot of fun to practice math drills on a hopscotch shower curtain or outside. The main thing I watched was frustration level and time. Sometimes I think mine are ready for a page of 30 long division with remainders only to realize they need 10.
  12. I'm looking for a gift for 2nd grader similar to Critical Thinking Company's Spider Island Riddles 1. I'd like something that runs on a kindle. Any ideas.
  13. Rules for kids online. What blocking software do you use? OK kids line up. Where's the line? I gotta potty! Is it time to go? I could make a fortune on software that blocked every word and action that didn't involve getting homeschoolers to get in a straight line.

  15. Do you think it is worth it? TOG has been worth every penny for us. I wanted all of us to be on one main history topic. I wanted to be the teacher and lead the discussions in junior high and highschool. And Oh, My, the discussions. This week my 14 dd and I discussed if the Mexican American War was a just war based on Thomas Aquinus's definitions. I guess I'm not sure if I'd use enough of TOG to make it worth it. Using LIt, History, SOTW, and Geography would be most of TOG. The real meat of TOG is when using it at the Dialectic level and Rhetoric level. I have one 14dd using history, geography, philosophy, government, and church history, a 12ds using history, church history, geography, and literature, and a 10ds using history and geography. I use other curriculum for writing and literature varies based on the child. I often supplement with Progeny Press study guides in upper grammar and when my dialectic level student is youngish and not ready for the mature themes. There are also fine arts, hands- on projects, philosophy, Bible, church history, government, and supplements like plays and board games. Honestly TOG is not worth the cost to use K-5th, if it is not used on into high school. It is worth the cost at the ages your kids are if you like what you see in the upper levels of the sample and plan to continue through junior high and/or high school. Tapestry was designed with high school running the show, and everyone else tagging along. Another option, if you are still not sure after the sample, is to buy the print version which is resalable with some of the spine books new. These resell well as upper grammar or dialectic packages. I think the best question to ask in evaluating the worth of TOG: Would TOG be a likely fit in junior high and high school? I tried posting a file of the hours involved for my kids and I. I'd be happy to email or answer other questions. You can PM me
  16. screen retriever looks about right. a recording of everything my kids see and everything they send and type. I'll check webwatcher too. thanks, everyone
  17. I'm looking for a different internet monitoring for my kids. I'm looking for something that would record not filter or block. My goal is not to protect them from all the trash, but to teach them how to navigate through and set up healthy habits. A specific problem: One child is using ROBLOX and running into some conversations: "Kiss me!" "Wanna have ####?" I'm not wanting to block the site or the conversations. This is just the real life training I want my child to have. My child handled the situation fine. I do want a record of the conversations. I want to be in the loop so to speak. Another child wants to use HOWRSE. Again I want to monitor the conversations. I also want to monitor any email identities my children create. I already use Norton child safety. It just records websites. As well as the typical blocking and filtering. Any ideas.
  18. We've used LFC A-C and are only on Ch 2 of Latin Alive. The DVD's are different. My son misses the children chanting and interacting with teacher. He especially thrived on the movie shorts, outtakes, and interviews that made LFC more personal and a bit of fun with the work. He's very disappointed that Latin Alive was not a continuation of LFC in the areas that mattered to him. Latin Alive is much more impersonal and more serious. The teacher style is very different and rightly so. Latin Alive's purpose is to ramp up to AP Latin. We'll see how far we go. Right now son and I work side by side. My advice is to find out what appeals to your son in the Latin for Children video.
  19. Thanks ladies. I just didn't understand loss.
  20. I need to see a bar diagram for this singapore 6CWP problem. p. 27 11. The usual selling price of a car was $104,000. It was later sold at a 10% discount and a 17% profit was made. Find the loss that would have been made if it had been old at a 30% discount. The answer is $7200 according to the book. Any one for bar diagrams?
  21. http://www.basic-mathematics.com/divisibility-rules-game.html http://edweb.sdsu.edu/courses/edtec670/cardboard/Card/D/Divisibility.html http://www.uen.org/Lessonplan/preview?LPid=18907 We did learn these. I haven't tried the above. We used 1/4 mile online for divisibility rules. Now with one in Algebra, I see they still use divisibility rules especially 9 in solving quadratics and in math challenge problems like What number am I if the following are true? I would definitely tailor learning to learner type. I have one coming up that I can't use 1/4 mile for. I'll have to use something like math challenge problems or they won't see the why? KWIM
  22. I thought that ID proponents did not support speciation. Am I wrong? OK you got me hungry to go read. I just read 3 chapters on this in Shepherd Biology. ID from that source includes examples of one dog ancestor forming many dogs through natural selection and mutations, especially considering hotspot mutation areas in Drosophila melanogaster and Darwin's variety of finches. Nice visual comparison of ID "orchard" and evolution "tree" to show different theories to species. Other topics covered: One interesting area was the hierarchy of information and how to define information. Specified complexity was another topic; an example was the enzyme ATP synthase. Discussion of types of mutations and the frequency of new trait giving information compared with beneficial mutations, exchanges (bacteria resistance to antibiotics), deletions, and duplications. Comparative embryology and comparative genetics were also discussed. Overall I've gleaned a much more clearly defined idea of what at least one ID author sees natural selection as capable of and incapable of.
  23. Just brainstorming here: I think the concepts of evolution and the concepts of design run through every level of biology from the subatomic to the extra terrestrial. I would be looking to address these all along the way. As a highschool biology teacher, I might have students assigned a topic to present as a dialogue/ skit 5minutes max scheduled throughout the year. I like the way Tapestry of Grace uses Pageant of Philosophy and Simplicio dialoguing with the different philosophers. Grading rubric would be based on using high value resources, defining terms with logic skills, and speaking skills. I know you're probably looking for a more specific list of topics. I like the math concepts about randomness and order and sequences. Another area I'd like to know more about is the delicate balance between so many elements ( living and non living) in each tiny ecosystem and how they all must function together or crash the whole. I'm also fascinated by the carefully sequenced intracellular activities that are also interdependent on each other. I can't see the "equal time concept" working. Instead, I would be wanting students to ask thoughtful questions and not be perplexed if they run into questions that still aren't answered.
