Can anyone recommend a film version of Treasure Island? This is for a older teen so I'm wanting to avoid kids movies. It also doesn't have to faithful to the book as comparing the film and book is part of the assignment. Just looking for an exciting and well made adaptation ... thanks!

Yes, all the way from alpha to zeta, a detour to Rod and Staff grade 7 (about halfway through?) which was good for review and exposure to more word problems and then almost two months going though zeta again as a preparation for starting MUS pre algebra. It has taken us a while to get through some lessons (eg. negative numbers, particularly lesson 7) but she is still making progress. If you don't mind me asking, why did you leave MUS for Jacobs'?

Hmmm ...maybe I don't really understand how MUS compares to other curriculum. She's not finding MUS pre algebra all that easy so I don't think she is ready to move onto MUS algebra. But hearing you say that some people use MUS algebra as a pre algebra year might mean I need to backtrack even more if I switch to another publisher.

Dd13 is about half way through MUS pre algebra. It just occurred to me that maybe it might be a good idea to do another year of pre algebra with another publisher before moving onto algebra. Has anyone done this? What did you use? Are you glad you delayed algebra? Just looking for stories from other homeschool parents at this stage. The plan is to probably go back to MUS for algebra but that may not work out.

My oldest has completed a few BJU literature and history courses at the high school level and I found the Teacher's Manuals were enough for me to teach those subjects. Now my youngest is approaching high school and I would like to use more BJU but not sure if I can teach the other subjects like math, science and english/grammar (no dvd/dlo). What do you think? Any there subjects I really should avoid? I wasn't good at math/science at school and I've only learnt about grammar through homeschooling my own kids

Anyone used these? What are they like? We have done BJU literature before but not their math.

Is it just me or do other people have trouble searching for subject/grades on Currclick? Every time I go there I end up getting very frustrated :cursing: I want to browse through literature studies for middle school and I want to buy them as a pdfs. When I select literature studies and 11 - 13 yr age from the side bar I get a ridiculous number of results which don't seem to be relevant. Any hints on how to perform a better search? Are there any other websites where I can buy curriculum in pdf format? At the moment I am looking for literature studies for middle school but I would also be interested in somewhere I could browse through all subjects in pdf format, middle and high school.

Does anyone advise or teach your children on warning signs of being in an abusive relationship or ways to safely get out of the relationship etc? I haven't but I wonder if I should. Are there resources on how to approach this subject with your children? I have preteens and teens.

We love Rod and Staff math. I'm sad it finishes at the end of grade 8. I'm not sure whether we will do the grade 8 math next year or whether I should be planning on making the switch at the end of grade 7. What's the grade 8 math like? Does it still have the clear instructions in the TM and the same type and number or word problems?

Did you get the BJU student text or the Teacher's Manual? I have only used BJU Lit at highschool level and all the instruction is in the TM. I agree with the pp who said teaching BJU is time consuming.

DD12 has done Math U See since Alpha and is currently on lesson 12 of Zeta. The curriculum hasn't been working for her since early/mid Epsilon in the way it explains new concepts and the amount of review it provides. I feel that I should at least consider moving on to something else but I feel conflicted about leaving because it's so hard to leave MUS with its particular scope and sequence! I haven't decided yet. Just need to hear some success stories. Why did you leave? How did you leave? And what did you go to?

I really like the look of the scripted lessons from BJU grade 6 math where they tell you exactly what to say to present new concepts and conduct review. However the BJU teacher's manuals look different for grade 7 and up and I can't see the same scripted lessons as in the elementary grades. I don't want to switch to BJU for one year and then have to switch again to something else so I'm really looking for a curriculum we can stick with until the end of middle school. I may consider dvd teaching options in the future but at this stage I want to teach the math and I would benefit from having the lessons scripted for me.

I know CBD has a sale at the moment on select Abeka elementary subjects but I'm looking for grade seven and higher. Also, not interested in DLO or DVDs ... just the textbooks. Is a sale cycle for Abeka and BJU textbooks?

I haven't done any BJU science beyond 6th grade so I don't know the answer to your question but I was wondering what math skills are required to complete BJU's 8th grade science? I have done Apologia's physical science and I think it was recommended that my dd complete pre algebra either beforehand or concurrently. BJU is a more rigorous course from what I can tell. Anyway, that might be a factor in your decision making.

I live overseas and often get family to bring curriculum here, sometimes it works out to be a year or more before we need it. But if I knew there was to be a new edition coming out I would wait and get it shipped here instead. We don't use the dvds etc so I'm just talking about the textbooks. I'm on the BJU email list and belong to a BJU users facebook group. I also use CLE and it seems to be pretty common knowledge in the user groups when subjects are being rewritten and field tested. Just wondering if there is any way of keeping up to date with BJU......

from the 6th grade heritage studies (2nd edition) which we have been using. Is it because I have been using an old edition? Or is there normally a big jump up from 6th to 7th grade anyway? Has anyone been looking at the samples online of the 7th grade BJU hertiage studies (World Studies)? What do you think?

I'm interested for grade 7 and higher grades. I'm not wanting dvds (etc) .... just something that dd12 can listen to while she follows along in the textbook.

Someone mentioned on the "Mama June" thread that gastric bypass surgery isn't successful in the long term. Is that true for all weight loss surgery? I had the impression that people who had previously struggled to lose and/or maintain a weight loss did really well after having surgery. Maybe there's different success rates for different types of weight loss surgery? :confused1:
