  1. FIAR can totally be used for kiddos that age. There is a lot of meat in those manuals and taking rabbit trails is so much fun to do!!
  2. I found it on the IEW site...you just have to log in first. Click on the highlighted level a reinforcement paragraphs. http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/swi-help
  3. I can't seem to find it back again...if you email me I can send it to you.
  4. If you join too the IEW families yahoo group there is a file with directions on how to use SWB B with an A tag along student.
  5. Stephanie, I am not Julie but we did use Adventures a few years ago and are now using Sonlight 3&4. We did Adventures when the boys were 7 and 9 and it was perfect for those ages. A bried overview of US history, not too detailed, cute hands on projects etc... My boys are 10 and 12 now and doing Core 3&4 and some of the read alouds stretch my 10 year old, so 8 might be a little young for Core 3. It is a wonderful Core though and defenitely one to keep in mind later on! HTH!
  6. I had an older 3rd grader when we did Adventures and I did add in extra reading for him. The state sheets do get a little tedious but the kids enjoyed watching their progress. If you are thinking you want to stay with Sonlight then just do as Merry suggested and take 2 years and keep the kiddos together. Add in some history pockets and have fun!! Both are great options!
  7. We used MFW Adventures a few years ago and it was a fantastic year! I also love Sonlight but I think Adventures is a better fit considering your kids' ages. I did have trouble with the book basket idea so I would totally buy the Sonlight reader bundles. That would make it the best of both worlds!
  8. We use this system and love it: http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/memorysys/ And a lot of these verses: http://simplycharlottemason.com/planning/scmguide/scripture/
  9. My 6th grade son loves Jump In! And we have used Igniting Your Writing and enjoyed that also. Christa
  10. Sonlight! Sorry I reread your post and saw you already knew about that one!
  11. My IG has the History/Read aloud/Reader schedule all in one. I chose to buy the IG this year and I am so glad I did! We don't follow the reader schedule as is but I love questions for the read alouds. We are using Core 3&4 and it is wonderful! Some weeks we are ahead and that is ok as you can still use the questions and the flow of history. My boys love the timeline and mapping. I am sure there are mamas out there who can do it on their own but I like a roadmap, even if we choose our own turn here and there... HTH! Christa
  12. Another vote to wait a few years...but another good childrens Bible is Vos's Child's Story Bible.
  13. I don't think you need to beef anything up either...but I agree with the previous poster about gaming time. My boys have 1 day per week for 30-45 minutes. I also found that out the hard way of letting them play everyday. Plus my chiropractor infomed me what video games do to the brain and that helped with the explanation to them. We have much better attitudes about school and they found amazing hobbies and fell in love with the outdoors. Christa
  14. It really depends on how your kiddos learn. I tried Rod and Staff and MUS and my boys hated them and were not retaining much so we switched to Saxon and they love math and have tested very well in math. I came to the realization that different kids learn differently and once you figure out how your kiddos learn it is much easier to figure out what curriculum to use. With that said I do not use Saxon for the younger years, I think it is overkill. Christa
  15. Here are study guides and free unit studies I found: http://litplans.com/authors/Laura_Ingalls_Wilder.html a binch of different links http://www.ltl.appstate.edu/litcircleunits/litcirunits_Avery01/Wilder/LittleHouse/Titlepage.html http://lara5.tripod.com/TrueLightAcademy/LittleHouse.html more of a unit study http://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/schoolroom/littlehouse.php ideas to make your own unit study http://schoolathome.blogspot.com/2005/01/little-house-on-prairie-lesson-plan.html someone's unit study ideas http://gardenofpraise.com/ingallslesson.htm Hopefully something in there helps a little! 16. I had a 5th and 3rd grader last year and my 3rd grader loved it! I have the first edition and if you can snag a deal on a used copy then go for it! There are activities for the younger kiddos and we did some of them but only when I had time or deemed them necessary. I also purchased All Through the Ages to get books for the different ages, but you could probably find a list somewhere online for free. HTH! Christa
  17. I do use it for spelling and my boys really like it but the only vocab I do is when they are in a box, we make a notecard out of them. For the really big lists I will discuss a few that I think they will struggle with or when we come to them in the reading. I have also added R & S english because we have done almost nothing regarding grammar up to this point and my boys really like it. You don't need to though. We are done by 11:30 almost everyday except for Science that we do in the afternoon. HTH! Christa
  18. I agree about Saxon being wonderful from 4th on up! We have wavered with Math curriculums and while I thought MUS was all that, my oldest was getting the right answers and not understanding why...so we went back to the drawing board and I will stick with Saxon all the way from 4th on up. I will probably use Singapore or MM for the earlier grades with my younger one coming up though... Christa
  19. I would say give a unit a try and see. You can always supplement if you think you need to later on. And if you skip a fine arts hymn singing, which we do occasionally, it's ok. The Bible portion changes because when you are studying Joseph that is your literature reading and after that she ties other things into Bible. HTH! Christa
  20. Not at all...it's written for grades 4-8. Christa
  21. I have used ECC almost all the way through and it was a tough year for me...but I know many that use it and love it. We switched to eclectic and than on to AWOA and we love it!! My kids are goegraphy lovers and they memorize maps for fun so I don't worry about an actual course too much...but you could always grab one of those workbooks that cover it or a really good map book with all the information in it. You do study the countries on a map during AWOA and I have my kiddos label them, but it isn't the whole world in one year like ECC. Christa
