To all Massachusetts homeschoolers
mrsdash replied to mrsdash's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I admit I have heard it is not easy to homeschool there and in Nashville, it's a cinch. I will deifinitley join the south shore group and investigate the different districts before we house shop. This whole process (of moving back) is a work in progress but this is the priority for me...being able to keep the kids home for school where they are thriving. I've seen lot's of Mass. people here so I knew I'd get some good help :) -
To all Massachusetts homeschoolers
mrsdash replied to mrsdash's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Oh, how funny! I am a 44 yr. old Red Sox bleeding, proud italian from Quincy, Mass, yes! We just got back on Saturday from a one week visit and I MISS IT SO MUCH! My family is there and I think it's time to be with everyone. The kids have so many cousins their age and had such a blast. I went to Wollaston Beach and wept, hahaha. -
To all Massachusetts homeschoolers
mrsdash replied to mrsdash's topic in General Education Discussion Board
wow, I did NOT know that! We are looking in Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree, Abington, Brockton...all around the south shore. Oh, boy. -
We're thinking about a move back home to Mass. I'm from the south shore (quincy) and have raised our 4 kids in Nashville. The deal breaker for me is the ease of homeschooling there. Can anyone tell me about the process and how homeschool friendly (or not) the area is these days? How hard/easy is it there to get legal and get started? Thanks in advance, Sherry

I wouldn't push it . My dd, at 3, stopped eating meat. She said "it hurts my heart" and that was it, she never ate meat again. She's 14 now and is a great eater. He'll be fine :)

I echo everything Colleen said. Real food and an active lifestyle is the key to being healthy. Stay away from food that comes in a box with ingredients you can't identify as real. Get natural in your thinking toward your body. Feed your body what it needs and deserves...natural, real food that comes from the ground and grows on trees. Change your attitude from "I need to lose weight" to "I will take care of my body so I can feel good and live longer." Go for long walks, hike, stretch. Put yourself in the mindset that says " This is good for me. This is what my body needs." I lost over 40 lbs. when I was 40. I changed my eating to clean eating and I began doing simple pilates and weights. When I got use to that, I ran, I walked and I hiked on the weekends. I did everything with the attitude that "this is good for my body; the only body I have." I treated myself like a child that I loved. So my advice is to not just change your eating and activity level but to change the way you think of yourself as well and make it a life long plan, not a temporary change. Good luck!

All this talk about LOF....Now I have questions
mrsdash replied to paulcindy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Math for readers is the perfect description and I have solid readers who usually don't love math. I bought LoF and they have completely changed their attitude toward math. -
No, not all parents are irresponsible but everything else seems to be based on the lowest denominator in society....excuses up the rear. Badly behaved kids all have some form of ADHD, ABCD or some other group of letters or they have food issues or their sensitive to something somehow. The bad apples have taken over the barrel.

The days of "wait till your father gets home" and "I'm telling your parents" are over. The majority of kids know that means nothing today.

I would be thinking that if I did it for him once, he'd be asking me to do it all the time. lol

Anyone using Life of Fred on it's own for math?
mrsdash replied to mazakaal's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are using LoF for Alg, Alg. 2 and Geometry with companions on the Algebras. My dd's are LOVING it and they are not thrilled with math. They are actually happy to do it now. The books were shipped same day and pkged well and signed. I think there are plenty of problems without using anything else. -
I just wanted to share!
mrsdash replied to Lizzie in Ma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
WOW!!! That is fantastic!! Good for her and I would be very proud as well!!! -
My initial reaction to the article? "good, let's see if he throws his food away again." Did she cross a line? I don't know...maybe a little but I won't say "yes". If that boy was "damaged" in any way from this, he doesn't stand a chance. pqr- you may be my new favorite person.

I've been getting Clean Eating for years. It's related to Oxygen magazine, Robert Kennedy and Tosca Reno. You can get a lot of info/recipes from Toscas website as well. I try to eat as clean as possible and I've enjoyed this magazines articles and recipes.

Friends' significant others
mrsdash replied to Mom-ninja.'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have had friends with spouses/sig. others that I have not liked but I've never given it much thought since I just associate with the friend, not their husband or boyfriend. -
Would you do this to your hair?
mrsdash replied to Alicia64's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I wait as long as I can and then I swallow hard and go to my salon. I find the walk- in places too unpredictable and they seem to be in a hurry so they can get in more customers. When I go to my salon, they have set aside the time for me and I don't feel like they are rushing, therefore, I feel like they are giving all their attention to my cut/color/style. -
My 2 favorites are The Gods of the Copybook Headings by Rudyard Kipling and Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash. The latter is very silly :)

They do every "Your turn to play" and all the "cities" plus the extra work in the companions so I think it's more than plenty. We also have the geometry but that doesnt have a companion. I can't tell you how nice it is to hear them enjoying math :)

Neither of my 2 oldest girls (14 and 16) are math minded. I tried Saxon, Keys to series, Singapore and Teaching Textbooks and although TT was the most successful, it didn't do the trick. SO- I recently bought Life of Fred and it's a huge hit!! Yesterday my dd said "I don't dread math at all now" and the other piped up with "I know, I'm loving this!". So imo, Life of Fred is a great fit for my girls. They are strong readers and this is in a storybook format so they are really enjoying it and feel like the lessons are real life based. It makes sense to them this way.

:grouphug: Been there and I can only tell you it'll pass and life will get better. Don't let anyone get under your skin and stay strong.
