The Grooms' Cakes I've seen have usually been decorated to reflect the groom's interests.  So usually a University, sports team, or hobby.

I've never seen a groom's cake in real life, so all I can think of is that scene from Steel Magnolias.

I really don't know what I am doing and am starting to think I am talking about something completely different by accident. this is my settings. I cannot work out how to do a screen shot so copied and pasted instead. I get a on-forum notification if someone likes what I write or sends me a pm, but I don't get an email .I have Do not send me a notification chosen.  Is this what you are meaning?

      • Only send one email notification for content I follow until I revisit the community

That is the top section of the notification settings. If you scroll down there are more settings.

I feel like I keep repeating myself, but since you asked, I will explain again. In the top section (which you copied and pasted) you can select "Do not send me notifications". Great, that stops the emails! If you scroll down to the bottom section, you can select from a long menu of items to select either "notification list" (which means on-site notifications in the little bell icon at the top of the page) or "email". Most of the items you can select either one or both or neither. But there are two lines that don't give you a choice: private messages and "someone comments on a thread I have followed". I posted a picture of that earlier but here it is again. Yes, you can get notifications if someone likes your post or quotes you and I am getting those. But you can also "follow" a thread to get updates when the thread gets new posts, even if you haven't posted or been quoted. Right now, with the current settings, following a post means you get emails. There is no way (that I can see) to follow a thread and only get onsite notifications.

So, to recap -- right now I, like you, have it set so that I am not receiving any emails. But I also am not following any threads, because if I did, I would get buckets of emails telling me that so-and-so posted on that thread. I don't want that. I would like to receive on-site notifications telling me that thread A and thread B and thread C have new posts. that is not possible right now without also getting emails.

    Does that help?

I switched off email notifications. it has worked for me

Melissa, here is a screenshot of my notification settings. This is in the lower section that you have to scroll down to get to. The first ("I receive a message") and the fourth ("Someone comments on something I follow") cannot be untoggled. Now, I can in the upper section turn off ALL email notifications, and that did work. However, I would like to be able to follow threads and receive on-site notifications without email notifications. That doesn't seem possible with the current settings.

  4. I don't see why it wouldn't work. When I make gravy, I simply adjust the quantities of everything up or down in equal proportion to match the quantity I desire. Comes out just fine. I don't see why a packet would be different. I think I do decrease the liquid slightly since a smaller percentage is lost to evaporation. So he might start with slightly less liquid and then adjust if necessary at the end.

I think you can have notification in here.  Just scroll further down and you can specify (for the most part, what notifications you are wanting.)  However, there appears to be no way to uncheck the "email" option for content you are following.  So there are threads that I am following, but not actively participating in that generate at least 5 emails a day that I really don't need.

Yes, it says the administrator has disabled the toggle switch for that option. As long as that's the case, I will not be following any threads here. Please consider changing that setting.

And yes once they have an actual license they much have insurance even if they never drive.

This is only if they live as part of a household with a car, right? Someone with no car doesn't need insurance. Or if they are off at college with no car?

I was surprised to find out we didn't need to add ds to the insurance while he's learning to drive . He's doing way more driving now getting the practice driving hours in than I anticipate he will once he has a license. (He walks or buses to almost everywhere he needs to go.) And I would think the learning hours are pretty high risk. But the insurance company said not until he has a license.

My notification settings must be different than yours somehow. Including a screenshot if I can get it to work. I was getting emails this morning until I set it to not send them.

Edited to add - I just now went back there and am just now seeing the bottom section. I swear it wasn't there earlier. Maybe things are going to be changing as they get everything worked out in the next few days.

Yeah, it's in the section below. There are two email notifications that cannot be toggled off.

BUT, your screenshot helped, because I had the "automatically follow content" options selected. I am turning that off for now. I do want to be able to follow threads, but ONLY if I get my notifications here instead of by email. Turning that off should solve my problem for the moment (fingers crossed).

It seems to have reset all notifications to email. I had to go in and turn a bunch off.

As I said in my post, I turned them all off as well, except for the two that it *would not allow* me to turn off. I also clicked "Do not send me notifications" in the top section of the Notification Settings. And yet . . . I have gotten ten emails about this thread in the last twenty minutes.

Is it different for you? PLEASE tell me how to stop the emails.

  9. So I posted once this morning and when I went to check my email just now, I had SIX emails updating me on who had commented/quoted/interacted with that thread. Yikes! I high-tailed it to the settings to turn that setting off. I went to Notification Settings and turned off just about all the email notifications, but to my surprise you CANNOT turn off the email setting for "Someone comments on something I follow".  It says "The administrator has diabled this option from being toggled." It says the same for "I receive a message" but that one doesn't bother me as much. I don't get many messages. But I definitely do NOT want to get an email every time someone comments on a thread. I don't really want emails at all. I want my notifications here at the forum.

I know they ran a blood panel. I don't think they did an xray. The cat can go a few weeks without throwing up and then she'll have a few days of throwing up after each meal. Both dd and her boyfriend work so they feed her around 7:30am and again at 6:30pm. The vet gave my dd a powder to put on the food but I don't know if dd was using it or not. I'll have to ask. She's changed food several times already and the Blue Sensitive Stomach seemed to help the most. I'd rather not do a vet change. We've been with this vet over 15 years and trust them. They've always helped all our pets. It's just this particular cat with her some days of throwing up. We wonder if she's just gobbling too fast. She gets 1/4 cup twice a day.

Do you know what the trigger is? The bolded sounds similar to my cat. In her case, it's when we open a new bag of cat food. She likes it so much she overeats and then throws up. After a few days it's not quite so amazingly fresh and delicious and she goes back to eating normally. Now that we know, we dish out the food very sparingly on the first couple of days of a new bag (4-5 times a day, instead of the usual twice a day).

  11. But if you do this you need to know east and west.  How would you know this?

I know people have already answered this with "the sun", but I agree it's harder than that. I have sometimes gotten quite tangled up in country roads with no idea what direction I was heading.

    But here's the thing--

If someone asked me what side of the road my house is on (or the place where I work), that's easy to answer. I have a very clear picture of my neighborhood and which way is north. I am on the north side of the street. My work place is on the east side of its street.

OTOH, if I asked someone what side of the road they were on, I would only be asking because I had a clear picture already of the road I was heading on, either because it was a spot I knew well or because I had looked at a map ahead of time. I wouldn't even ask unless I knew the road was going east/west.

So, while I don't always know which way is north at any moment, it will only come up in conversations in situations where I do know it.

  12. Ok but how do I tell north or south?  Without using a compass?

I already beyond embarrassed myself so I might as well learn this now.

For example, go look at this map of the National Mall in D.C.

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:National_Mall_map.png

This map is in the normal configuration, i.e. north is up on the map. Do you see where the White House is, at #3? And see how Constitution Avenue is below that? That means that the White House is on the north side of Constitution Avenue. Meanwhile, a little bit to the east (right), you see the Natural History Museum (#24), which is on the south side of Constitution Avenue.

Once you've seen the picture on a map of a place you know well, you might keep carrying that picture in your head. Many people do. It becomes second nature to them that Constitution Avenue runs east/west with the White House to the north and the Mall to the south.

Some people don't carry a birds-eye picture like that in their minds, though. They organize the information differently. Maybe you are that kind of person?

  13. I can't imagine considering this an important privacy concern among users on the same account.

Your library may work differently from mine. At our library, each account is for one user only, though as I said earlier, patrons can choose to give permission to others to use their account. But we definitely believe that each user has a right to privacy, even from others in the same household. (Again, it's a little different for parents with respect to young children.)

The libraries I use have gone to self-checkout machines. So I could use any card I happen to have on me. Of course, now that is only my own...everyone else carries their own card. How would a machine know who is checking things out?

At our library, if you are in possession of someone else's card, then they have implicitly given you permission to use their account (check out items, look up what they have out, pick up holds, etc.).

I'll shut up now about my library's policies. I'm sure nobody else cares.

  14. Yeah our library is SO not uptight about a household using each other's cards. Once I went to borrow (rent) a book and my card had a bunch of fines. I always pay my fines but couldn't on that day, so the librarian just checked my book out on my kid's card even though I didn't have that card on me. :) She could see the cards associated with my account on the computer and just picked a different one.

While it's nice when libraries can be flexible to accommodate patrons, a more foundational principle is that library users have the right to privacy and confidentiality. For example, a husband does NOT have the right to know what books his wife has checked out. At our library, patrons can have a note added to their account saying, for example, "Husband John can pick up holds for Judith" or "Mom Helen is authorized on this account" but the default is no access.

With young children, the situation is a little different. But with adults and teenagers, we do try to be consistent. Even though it annoys patrons, we consider it an important protection of their privacy rights. Once we explain the reasoning, they are usually understanding.

  15. According to Pew Research, as of 2015 --

Amid a changing religious landscape that has seen a declining percentage of Americans who identify as Christian, a majority of U.S. Christians (54%) now say that homosexuality should be accepted, rather than discouraged, by society. While this is still considerably lower than the shares of religiously unaffiliated people (83%) and members of non-Christian faiths (76%) who say the same, the Christian figure has increased by 10 percentage points since we conducted a similar study in 2007. It reflects a growing acceptance of homosexuality among all Americans – from 50% to 62% – during the same period.

  16. Thanks for this.  I am definitely trying this.

My mom makes delicious meat tacos.  With corn in them.  When we were growing up she would make them for company and stand at the stove and keep warming the corn tortillas in oil while everyone else ate.  I prefer to make up a dozen or so ( I have 3 men in my house) and keep them warm in the oven.  I put them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil....this way we can all eat together.  I think my mom is offended that I don't stand and cook while everyone else eats though.  ;)

Yeah, I've tried doing that. But then everyone is trying to make the tacos at the table, and it seems chaotic. How much meat should I put on? Wait, can you pass me the sauce now? For me, it seems easier to just make one taco at a time at the counter, put on the toppings myself, and send it to the table. Possibly I have some control issues.

We go back and forth between dry-toasting the tortillas and frying them in oil. For beef tacos I like frying them in oil. Indulgent but so yummy!

  17. So, what are the options you are considering?

    1. Ds goes with team alone. CONS: he's nervous about it

    2. Ds doesn't go at all. CONS: he misses the opportunity, it's already paid for, bad for the team

    3. Dh and/or whole family goes along and stays at a hotel with ds? Is that an option you are considering? I can't tell from the OP. CONS: extra expense, uses precious vacation time

I'm not sure if I've represented it accurately, but I always like to start by laying out what the actual options are.

  18. Sure if you only have one cat it's pretty easy to find other things. Especially if it's a youngish cat who hasn't yet developed kidney issues (they almost all do as they age). If you have an older cat(s) you might find yourself needing to scoop multiple times a day. Add in a dog or two and . . . the need grows. Maybe we shop in a weird way (and by nature we're minimalists), but other than grocery bags the only plastic I can count on is one bread bag a week. I don't put veggies or fruit in bags unless absolutely necessary and some of the prepackaged stuff comes in perforated bags (for air circulation) which eliminates their use as poop or litter bags.

I wouldn't say it's weird if you're shopping in a way that minimizes plastic. That's great!

I have gotten pretty good at eliminating the grocery bags and I'm working on eliminating produce bags, but I still seem to accumulate a bunch of plastic from other sources. Just in the last 24 hours, I have gotten plastic bags from:

    a package of corn tortillas

a package of coffee filters (usually I get a brand that comes in a cardboard box, but I was at a different store)

    a package of rubber bands

something in an Amazon box, can't recall exactly what

    a bag of coffee beans

I don't think we would normally have so many in one day, but gosh, they just keep coming. Of course, I will recycle all of them. Except the coffee bag -- I don't think those are recyclable because they aren't thin-film.

  19. Re the Fish Stick Tacos:

It cracked me up that they got comments!

One of my favorite foods are tacos. The key, for me, is to get the big bags of small white or yellow corn tacos, and then briefly heat them up on the stove until they start to get brown dots. It brings out the flavor of the tortilla and adds immensely to the overall taco taste.

My other favorite tacos are any kind of meat, well browned--chorizo, cubes of beef or chicken; I've even taken leftover bbq pork and cooked it in a pan to dry it out and make it a little brown/crispy. Place on on the browned tortillas, top with finely chopped raw onion, cilantro, salsa, and a few slices of avocado. I just copied the style from my favorite Mexican restaurant. They are amazing.

    More comments for you! :)

Would you believe I was inspired by your post for our dinner last night? I stopped at the store to pick something up quick for dinner, and all I could think of was fish tacos. IT WAS SO GOOD! And the best part it, from the moment I walked into the house to the first tacos on the table was 15 minutes. You can't beat that! I do the same thing you do with the tortillas. For the cabbage, I bought a bag of premade coleslaw (I was going for fast and I was walking home, so I didn't want to carry a heavy cabbage). For the sauce, I mixed some mayo with the juice of half a lime and some sriracha. I popped the fish sticks in the oven as soon as I got home and started toasting tortillas on the stove. Dumped the cabbage in a bowl and mixed up the sauce while that was going.

ETA: We also put some feta on top, which I had on hand. It made a nice complement to the cabbage and fish.

I don't know if I was super hungry or what, but it tasted so amazingly good. I am definitely going to remember that for the future.

The only thing I don't like about tacos is that it does take awhile to toast the tortillas. I usually keep toasting them at the stove until everyone else is done eating, then make a couple for myself and sit down to eat. But even doing that, it's still a very fast meal.

    Thanks again for mentioning it.

  20. If I save them, I do fold them into the little triangles. I try not to get them at all, but we do keep a few on hand in the same drawer as plastic wrap, etc. The triangles fit nicely in the corner. Ones that we're recycling just get stuffed in a larger bag until we have enough to take to the recycle drop-off.
