Any homeschoolers here at Twitchcon in San Francisco?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to kroe1's topic in The Chat Board
We are not there but we watch a lot of Twitch in this house. I'm looking forward to seeing what kinds of things Twitch may announce and how their first con turns out. It's been strange to load up the site and see all the people I follow be offline. I hope you and your daughter enjoy your time there :001_smile: -
My husband and I like to play The Duke and What's My Word?
-
My husband is an RPG veteran and he's tried to get me to play many different systems over the years. I could never see myself playing any of them. I watched this playthrough of Dungeon World and it all made sense to me. I let that be known and now we're playing through our own Dungeon World campaign as a family. :001_smile:

If you crochet (or knit) I have a question
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to Lady Florida.'s topic in The Chat Board
I make these potholders/hotpads. Some are given away and some are sold depending on the circumstances. -
We take most card games out of their boxes and put them in this box: http://www.spacesavers.com/Storage/Divided-Storage-Boxes/Trading-Card-Case There's probably at least 6 different games in ours right now. If we want them in a more sturdy box (or to keep cards in board game boxes corralled), we use these: http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/145726 or http://www.coolstuffinc.com/p/145731 If we want to keep them in their original boxes, they either go on a shelf or in a shoe pouch that hangs on our game closet door.

The site I always go to in order to research or look up a game is BoardGameGeek. There you can get information about a game, sometimes see the rules for it, see videos people may have made for reviews or playthroughs, and a lot of other things. The games my dh and I play together are: DC Comics Deck-building Game Dominion (but only with the base set + Prosperity. We don't have all of the expansions.) Eminent Domain Alien Frontiers Race for the Galaxy What's My Word? Lords of Waterdeep Summoner Wars Roll Through the Ages

Better question than "where do you work?" to get to know people
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to Ottakee's topic in The Chat Board
I usually end up saying, "Do you have anything exciting going on in your life?" Even if they don't really have anything "exciting" going on, they at least take the time to think of an answer and then we have a starting point to work from. -
Need board/card game ideas for teen group
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to bobbeym's topic in The Chat Board
Tsuro is a fun game that up to eight people can play. -
Thank you for all your tips and especially for pointing this out to me. It didn't occur to me to search for a fish store and after doing so, I've found several in my town.
-
I was thinking freshwater aquarium. We do have limited space so I've got figure out the biggest size tank that will fit and then plan the fish accordingly. Whatever size tank we get now will have to be it. There's no way we could ever upgrade to a huge size. I've already warned the kiddos that we may accidentally kill some at the beginning of our fish adventure.

We're thinking about getting fish. I've done some research and realize it's not "just buy a fish and stick it in a bowl." What are some of your tips on how to get started? Anything you wish you'd known? Any particular website you refer to? There are so many opinions for first timers, I'd rather have one or two places to refer to instead of the myriad I've found.

NYC Mayor's Interpreter - Just a vent!

I thought I'd pass along this article about the interpreter. -
Crochet questions - potholders?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to aggieamy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
This is my go-to potholder. I don't worry about joining or counting rounds. I just go until it can be folded into a square easily. Oh, and I prefer using 100% cotton. I buy the cones from Walmart or Bernat Handicrafter Cotton from Joann. -
For fun: What is your ringtone?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to Oak Knoll Mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have different ones for different people: theme from Firefly, theme from Superman, Phantom of the Opera, the Imperial March (from Star Wars), Hard Days Night by the Beatles, Fireflies by Owl City and a regular old ringing phone for everyone else. -
Experienced crocheters, please help!
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to Mommy22alyns's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I think you'd just do 14 of the foundation chain. It sounds like that 15th stitch is needed for the "turning" chain, which you don't need. -
I need a gentle way to say no...
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to 4ofus's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've told people that this is the time that Granny doesn't have to share the child and the child doesn't have to share Granny. Anyone else who is interested can try setting up their own time. Hopefully you'll be able to find a way to say "No" and then just repeat it and not let anyone else try to make you feel bad or guilt you into anything. -
Favorite (non-electronic) games?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to tntgoodwin's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I saw Wil Wheaton play this on his web series TableTop and shocked my husband when I said "We need to get this game." (It's usually him saying we need to buy a game.) I really like that it's easy to learn and doesn't take forever to set up and play like some of the other games in our collection. My in-laws enjoyed it and it was a nice change for all 7 of us to be able to play a "board" game together since you can have up to 8 players. As an added bonus, we like how the pieces feel. I hope you enjoy it and the other games you picked. :001_smile: -
Favorite (non-electronic) games?

Some of our favorites: Tsuro Dominion Small World Carcassonne Telestrations Wits and Wagers Family "What's My Word?" is a nice two person word game. You could also go to Board Game Geek and see all different kinds of games and suggestions. -
Frustrated, DD won't play
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to Dealea86's topic in General Education Discussion Board
What I ended up doing with my oldest is putting the baby gate up and start playing with her in her room. I'd get something going and then I'd say "Okay, you keep playing and I'll be right back" and then I'd leave for a little bit and come back. I kept making the "be right back" longer and longer and she eventually found something to do or play with and didn't realize that I hadn't even come back. :001_smile: Then she felt comfortable playing by herself in her room because she knew once I was done with whatever it was I was doing I'd come back for her. This didn't happen in one day, just a little bit every day. -
Can crochet afghans be soft and cozy?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to joannqn's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I almost always use this yarn. It's machine washable and very soft. I find it at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michael's and Joann's. I don't know of any particular squishy or soft stitch/pattern. I just pick ones that I enjoy doing and the blankets still come out snuggle worthy. :001_smile: -
It sounds like you're putting the actual physical piece on a tile. Is that right? That's not necessary since there are two tiles that have the picture of the treasure on it. The pieces themselves can go to the person who rescues it to show that that part of the adventure is done. Because there is a lot of flipping of tiles, it would seem tedious to me to have a piece sitting on top of a tile. :001_smile: If you keep the piece off the tile itself, then it doesn't matter. What matters is that you have to have at least one treasure tile not sunk in order to rescue that treasure. I hope that makes sense.

You can load movies onto the iPod Touch. I have the 32 gb one and am able to keep what I want on there. I don't have to pick and choose which music/videos/apps stay on my device. I would not enjoy juggling all of that on the 8 gb. Videos take up more room than anything else so I do change those out. I would recommend buying the biggest size you can afford. I know not enough space is more annoying than too much (if there is such a thing). :001_smile: The program I use to get movies off our DVDs is this. It did take me a little bit to learn how to use it but it's worth it since I don't have to buy digital versions of things I already own.

Download movies to iPad?
LucyMcGillicuddy replied to bnrmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I use this to get things off the DVDs we own and put them on my ipod touch. I like having my favorite shows and movies on my device without having to re-buy it in a digital version.
