  1. I'll probably be completely chewed out for saying this but it seems like prosecuting this woman is only going to keep more kids in situations like this. Parents who need help are going to be afraid to ask for it for fear of being prosecuted. Prosecution isn't going to change her mind about anything. She already recognized that her parenting was ineffectual and she needed help. Please note that I would not be saying this if it were a clear case of child abuse. This just seems very borderline to me. It's obviously harsh and crappy parenting but I'm not convinced it's in the same category as hitting, starving, sexual abuse, etc.
  2. I agree with Angela. I have my daughter work through every problem, even if it takes us two days to get through the lesson. Once we started on the second H4 workbook, the lessons were pretty simple and she was able to do 2 lessons a day (her idea, not mine) and has caught up. There are fewer division problems per lesson in the second book. HTH
  3. I don't have my AG with me so I can't check, but I thought they transitioned to writing a narration from the outline. I think they give the student the completed outline to use for writing the first few narrations. If I remember correctly, the instructions are on the student outline. I'm not sure if it is actually mentioned in the AG. HTH Jen
  4. :bigear: I'm planning to do the same thing. I am curious to hear what others have to say.
  5. :iagree: We had the same issues with Junie B. My daughter is going through the Sonlight 2 Readers and enjoying them. A lot of them are leveled readers.
  6. Mine was spaghetti strap, but there weren't many out there at the time. Married in 1996.
  7. Like most of the others, I just say "We homeschool". But when asked about socialization I politely inform them that I have a MA in Sociology and "Yes, it was a huge reason we chose to homeschool". ;) They usually don't have much to say after that.
  8. Me too!!! I am doing SOTW 4 with my 4th grader and would LOVE to see how you did it last year.
  9. :iagree: I love Sonlight's reader selections.
  10. Fantastic! I am adding it to my shopping list. Thank you!
  11. I LOVE the look of this planner, but haven't purchased it. I'm curious about what others think too. :bigear:
  12. Does it really exist? Where can I get some? I have torn so many maps, posters, etc. by using permanent double-sided tape!
  13. I believe the black paper clips are called binder clips. I just picked up a tub of them at Office Depot. They are super colorful and they say "Crap" on them. It's not a word I generally throw around, but it was so appropriate for what I was using them for.
  14. I just put the tiles on our refrigerator. We just pull up a blanket and get to work. (It's good motivation to keep the kitchen floor realtively clean. ;)) I use one set of tiles for two girls. They are currently on different levels so I have never had a problem with using only one set of cards.
  15. We are starting August 23rd. There's just too much fun to be had here in the summer time.
  16. I don't have an answer for you but I was wondering the same thing.
  17. We test every year because I am curious. :tongue_smilie: The test has never shown anything I didn't already know. It tends to confirm the areas that I know to be weak or strong. I also do it so the kiddos can get some exprience with how to take a test. We are blessed to homeschool, but if I ever had to put them into public or private school they would need to be tested. I wouldn't want their scores to be weak simply because they were inexperienced with the test format.
  18. We spend the most on history. This year I had to stop and ask myself, "How much do I really need to spend on one subject?" It was getting a bit out of control. :001_huh:
  19. It's beautiful! Thank you for sharing. I love seeing how others have organized their spaces.
  20. Is this what you are looking for? http://homescool-ed.blogspot.com/2007/04/sonlight-books-arranged-by-well-trained.html
  21. I buy a big roll of tickets at the beginning of the year. They earn tickets for completing their school day with a good attitude, completing certain projects, completing a book, encouraging each other, etc. They can also lose tickets if they are choosing to be snarky or lazy. I have a treasure box full of items that they can purchase with their tickets. I try to keep the items useful and fun (colored pencils, journals, books, stationery, fun toothbrush, colorful hair rubberbands and clips, etc.) I would love for my girls to just do their school work joyfully, with the only reward being thier satisfaction with a job well done. ;) We just aren't there yet. I'm okay with offering rewards in these early years.
  22. Right there with ya! I find a consistent starting time and plenty of protein for breakfast makes our day much smoother. I try to never serve sugar at breakfast (waffles, pancakes, sugary cereal, etc.). The days I have a brain lapse and actually serve pancakes turn into complete chaos. Seriously. It's not pretty.
