  1. One of my twin daughters is about a half year behind in reading, a year and a half behind in math and 2 years behind in English and spelling. Spelling could be nearly 3 years. You are not alone.
  2. I have one boy, and it is not an issue for him as he has a few pet peeves about his hair touching his ears, etc. My only requirement is that it must be at or above his eye brows. ETA and clean, of course...
  3. We schedule it on Thursday and Friday. I have a schedule that I follow. I think I got it for $5.00 from Rainbow Resource Center. I confess that science with the little ones is something that often gets dropped if we need to do something else. Best wishes,
  4. A spoonful of honey. We use this all the time to soothe coughs. We also use Emergen-C which is a packet that you mix with water. When my kids first show signs of a cold I supersatuate them with it. I has to be spaced out in intervals or else the bosy won't absorb the C. I hope your daughter feels better soon.
  5. Yes, it is perfectionism, and it is a terrible monster to slay. I can spin my wheels doing but never accomplishing anything. I was "working" on lesson planning for about 8 hours yesterday. I understand completely. Best wishes,
  6. We average about $600 a month for a family of 6 including one teenaged boy. This does include non food items. It does not include a lot of meat as we purchase that separately from a local farmer.
  7. Many local places serve Thanksgiving dinner, but our grocery store sells a dinner that serves 8-10 people. The ad says that you do need to heat it at home, but I would think you could use and electric roaster for that. THe cost for this dinner is $95 and it includes: stuffing, green been casserole, whipped potatoes, candied yams, gravy, cranberry orange relish and broccoli and cauliflower with pine nuts. For all I know perhaps the SuperWalMarts do this also. I don't live near enough to one to know. Best wishes,
  8. Oh yes, we ALWAYS skipped problems. In the 4th grade and up books I would have them either do evens or odds. Best wishes,
  9. I can only say this from the research I have done and what my plan was if TRISMS had worked for us. 8th grade-DAW 9th grade-EOC 10th grade- RON 11th grade AOR 1st book 12th grade AOR 2nd book Many had said that AOR deserves two full years. I don't know if that helps or not.
  10. Another thought would be to seriously consider how many toys they actually play with at all. When I really consider this with my children I found that there were only a few basic, classic toys that they played with. I can't help you with how to return the toys to the children, but weeding out toys might be part of your game plan. Best wishes,
  11. I picked other also because we used CW successfully last year with the oldest children when we did Aesop B, but transitioning to Homer has not been so easy. I am also using WWE with my younger two.
  12. I am most familiar with SOTW as we have used all 4 volumes. I have also use HWT for all of my children in all the books from preK through the new 5th grade book. Even though we don't use it anymore, I am have used all levels of R&S math and can speak on it. I have also used almost all of the Elementary Apologia with the exception of the newest book: Zoology 3. Best wishes,
  13. This is a very interesting thread. I am coming in late here since I just joined, but my most expensive error occurred this year with TRISMS. This is just not working for us. Combine that with MOH Volume 1, and I had to completely restart history in October. I tried Writing Strands twice, and had the same results. Tears. I am just going to try to resell the TRISMS as quickly as possible and hopefully recoop some money. That will make me feel better. Best wishes,
  14. We did! We started with SOTW Vol. 1 when ds was in 4th grade. It took us almost 2 years to complete, so yes, he used it as a 5th grader. Actually he continued in SOTW through 8th grade. Best wishes,
  15. He felt that history became too disjointed. Up through last year we did SOTW. He started it in 4th grade and it took us 5 years to finish. Since SOTW has the book as a spine, it is easy to see the flow of history. TRISMS has no such spine, and so for him history became very disconnected. So, we are now using Streams of Civilization along with the maps from SOTW. I sat down and planned out the year based on Ancient Israel and Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. I went back and reread WTM sections on history at all levels and I am incorporating a lot of the outlining. I am also doing what Jessie Wise had her children do. They are going to the library each week and taking out a book in 8 different categories. Last week was our first week. I hope it continues to go well. I made a little form for each of them to fill in as they selected books, and I had to approve them. I have a friend whose son absolutely loves TRISMS. However, for those who have trouble with it the disjointed nature of it seems to be the big complaint. I wish I had know that before we purchased it. Now I am planning to sell my EOC. Best wishes,
  16. If it was from chicken with the bone in, then I would save it. I add back in the picked bones from the meal and cook it for the better part of 24 hours in my crockpot with carrots, onions and celery. Best wishes,
  17. You need a lab science to go with TRISMS. In addition you would need grammar, if you are still doing that. Grammar is not part of TRISMS. TRISMS does fulfill a literature/composition credit, I believe. Honestly, we tried TRISMS this year, but my son started to really dislike history, so we dropped it.
  18. We feed both. She has dry available at all times, and I feed her 1/4 of a 6 oz. can in the AM and then another 1/4 of a 6 oz. can in the PM. She waits for me to get up in the morning and then RUNS down the stairs. I feed her right away as soon as I enter the kitchen. The second feeding is right before I start making dinner. I just was not comfortable taking away her dry completely that is why we do both.
  19. I have used HWT for all 4 of my children. Their cursive is very pleasant. I prefer them to have a readable cursive, so I am not worked up about the fact that it doesn't slant. Also, the lack of a slant is what makes the transition from print to cursive easier.
  20. From my research I would agree that canned it better. I mimicks their natural diet much more than dry kibble. My understanding is that vets typically recommended dry because they though canned food contributed to tartar build up on the teeth. We still feed some dry, but our kitty gets canned twice a day. Right now my girl is dealing with a UTI. I am hoping we don't have a lot of issues with her. She is eating Natural Balance canned cat food. I did a lot of research on line. There is a lot of information out there for you to read and make your way through. Best wishes,
  21. Is this for the lower levels (7th and under)? In the algebra the solutions are a separate CD, and we only use it to check the ones my son got wrong. He does his math within my view, so I can keep tabs on what is going on.
  22. Here is a You Tube video that I found. It is the only thing that helps me. It is a 4 part video. Each part is VERY short.
  23. My olest dd is in 7th grade. We didn't finish our first cycle of SOTW until last year, so this is the first year that I have actually implemented any of the logic stage strategies. I am having her outline the corresponding section in the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. We are working on getting our time line up and running. That is as far as we have gotten this year. We had tried to start the year with Mystery of History, but I just couldn't get into it. So, we changed back to SOTW. We still use the maps and sometimes the coloring pages.
