  1. Call HSLDA first...and being from SC originally that is something I have never heard of before.:001_huh:
  2. Thank you so much for asking this question. I am in a similar boat. I have a daughter going into the 8th grade next year. We are drawing up a plan for the next 5 years currently and want to choose wisely! We want to pick something and stick with it... We are leaning towards MFW again, but are also considering Tapestry of Grace and Heart of Dakota followed by either MFW high school courses or Notgrass history. Our end goal is CLEP testing during high school and equipping our children for college as best as we can...
  3. We have used ECC from the 2-8 cycle...we dropped it the next year to use Mystery of History, which I far prefer, but I really missed MFW. This year I used most of the resources, but not the manual...another huge mistake! I am returning to MFW next fall. We will have children ib 8th, 6th, 4th, and 1st. We will be using the Exploration to 1850's study with the younger children's supplement. I like to add to the children's English work, but doing the full schedule, and using the library for the resources listed in the back is a ton of work! We used Sonlight prior to MFW and found MFW to as rigorous or maybe even more so. My friends with HS age child have had great success with those studies. Their children are using them and passing CLEP exams rather easily. One other curriculum you may want to check is Heart of Dakota. My same friends love these materials as well... I haven't used them personally. That said my mother-in-law does use the youngest program three days a week with my toddler and preschoolers. They love it and it is FULL of Bible...
  4. We have used ECC, K, and 1st...We love My Father's World and are planning to go back to it for American History...the older two using the third Unit and the younger two using Adventures...It is going to be FUN!!!
  5. Food for thought on this subject...a friend of mine is using these exclusively with her high schoolers, who are very math inclined. Both boys passed their CLEP exams for algebra last month and scored over an 83...She is very happy with the outcome. The boys background was from Singapore and a short stint with Teaching Textbooks...The oldest is studying for two more CLEP exams including Calculus...he is newly 15.
  6. This is the route I have used with my oldest three...my two boys are great spellers. My oldest, dd, not so much. But, they can all figure out just about any word the come across reading and even when they misspell the words make sense from a phonics stand point. ETC, while 'easy' really does make a difference from what I can see, and it also provides a little extra reading and writing practice.
  7. Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions and advice...I am needing to use textbooks more this year and have been struggling to decide between BJU and ABeka. Honestly I still don't know what we'll use entirely, but fell like I can now see past the gloss! This is such a switch from our current and past way of educating our children, which has been an eclectic mix of CM and Classical...using lots of Sonlight and MFW additions!
  8. I would like to hear from a mother of at least three children involved in CC...we have 5 with number 6 mon the way this fall. I love the idea, but the sticker price has been a shocker for us. I think that $13 a week is pretty cheap, that is until I add up that price by each child...For you mothers of many, did you feel the tutoring was well worth the price and the day away from home? What areas did/do you feel your children benefited from in CC? Thank you so much for your input!
  9. Our children have never had this problem...but go with what works for your child...And I have heard great things about Math Mammoth!
  10. I am so excited about this as it has been a lifesaver having the self-checking the last two years! I wanted to cry when I thought about checking all those Algebra lessons on top of everythig else!
  11. We have both, but only ever use the flashcards...
  12. We are starting our third year of TT in the fall...as a homeschool graduate myself, I wish my mother could have used this with our family! My dd used TT5 and 6, and will move on to Pre-Algebra this fall. And my ds will start his journey with TT5 in the fall. TT is such a lifesaver for us as a larger family with lots of little ones running around! Math is actually getting done! Congratulations on your purchase!
  13. Hi Ladies, I am adding Classical style education into our electic/ Charlotte Mason mix this year. As I am planning my year to be and book lists I thought that perhaps I would ask other moms how much the 'do'in a day, a week, a year...I have 5 little ones~ 9,7,5,2.5, and 3 months...the amount the WTM encourages is too much right now and we plan to use these three approaches to aid not enslave us. Does anyone care to share ideas, schedules, plans, or experience? If there is a thread already, please share! :bigear::party:
  14. We have used SL LArts K, 1, and 2....These were fantastic for my dd who used them first, when the next child, my ds#1 started using them I had to change a lot with the way things were done and improvise...dd was a great writer and started copywork at around 4...ds was around 6. Now with the 3rd child I was planning to use the K with it has been a nightmare! His writing is no where near that level, so we slowed our pace and are using Explode the Code with The Ordinary Parents Guide...we are in love! Next year we will continue with this book, the Explode the Code workbooks, and start First Language Lessons which we are using with the other two this year and love. We are still using the readers on each child's reading level. This has worked great and all the materials we like have been readily available to buy. WP has always appealed to us, but we just have never bought it. We are an eclectic meshing of CM and Classical...so I make the best of all the approaches I like and this combo seems to fit really well together....For writing we are going to add Writing with Ease possibly this coming school year.
