  1. Don't know if it would help or not, but it may be worth watching. Schoolhouse Rocks - Adjectives http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYzGLzFuwxI
  2. When doing narrations, is a child supposed to give a statement that is a summary, or can it just be whatever they can remember? My dd is 6 (almost 7) and her narrations are never about the main point/plot/theme of a story. For example, if I read her a passage about the adventures of a brown dog named Bob, her narration would be something like "The brown dog's name was Bob." Nothing at all to do with what he did or what the story was otherwise about. On occasion I use SOTW for her to do a narration and hers are never anything like the suggested narrations in the AG. Should I be worried, or is this normal for a 1st grader? Also, how can I help her to come up with more of a summary statement? (should I even do that?) Thanks a bunch!
  3. Either dh or myself read all of dd's e-mail b/c she's only 6 and doesn't even know how to access it herself. Of course the only people she gets/sends email with is her grandparents. :D
  4. A while back dh and I looked at some old pics of dd. There were many, many pics where her bangs were way too short. Yes, I had cut them. More than once. I don't think I realized at the time just how bad it looked. Thankfully a while back we decided to grow her bangs out, so we don't have that problem anymore. :D
  5. Dd and I are currently reading The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor. No actual pirates (yet), but lots of sailing adventures. We are really enjoying it.
  6. I have felt this way from time to time. To try to make up for it, I try to schedule in some one-on-one time with ds. What I like to do is spend 30 minutes with him during dd's quiet reading time. I take that time to do puzzles, read books or other things ds wants to do. I also let him help me with some of the household chores while dd does her independent work in the mornings. He loves to fill the washing machine or put away the silverware. It may not be the park or the zoo, but it is still good bonding time.
  7. :iagree: It's worth the little extra to save me the time of baking.
  8. I don't do all the writing in FLL. I do it occasionally, though. I also do not do narrations for SOTW. I only do the questions after I read to dd. If I did it all, it would quickly become tedious and dd would hate it.
  9. I don't know of a specific brand, but I'll share one thing I learned when potty training my dd. The training pants with the built in plastic cover absorbed nearly as well as a diaper. It totally did not bother dd to wear them when wet. When I switched to the training pants with a separate plastic cover, suddenly it wasn't so great to be wet and training improved a lot.
  10. My dd is nearly 7yo. She still writes with huge letters. On a recent thread a lot of people complained of the too-wide lines in the WWE student book. Those are actually perfect for her large letters. Every once in a while, she will have a worksheet that doesn't give as much space for answers and I end up writing in the answers as she tells me. I probably shouldn't do that, but when the space is tiny, what else am I to do? Is it normal for her to continue to write so big? When does this change? Should I be doing something to help her transition?
  11. My 2yo ds is having troubles with his speech development. He just can't seem to learn more than 5-6 consonant sounds. My BIL has told me about a free program through the county PS system. BIL said a friend of his used it with his (friend's) son with great results. He said it's free and they even come to your house for therapy sessions. I would call today for an evaluation, but I hesitate to have any dealings with the ps system. Dd will obviously be there when he has evaluations/therapy, so they will know we hs (dd is way too tall to pass for a preschooler). So, do I or don't I? Can I get an evaluation anywhere else for free? Anyone BTDT with a similar circumstance? Thanks!
  12. I don't know anything about the places you mentioned, but here's a place just outside DC that we went to just today. It's a colonial farm (year 1771) and if you want to you can join them in helping work the farm the "old fashioned" way. http://1771.org/index.htm
  13. I give weekly memory work. On Monday dd gets a set of index cards. She practices them for 5 minutes each day and recites them to me or dh on Friday. At this point I am mainly trying to help her better retain the info we have been studying. This is what they include: memory verse 2 sentences from history (1 card) 2 sentences from science (1 card) 5-6 Spanish words (made like flashcards) I hope to eventually have her memorize passages from speeches, poems, etc. as she gets older.
  14. I know we shouldn't lie, but could you just say you won't be home? :D
  15. My dh started me on the Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik. I've enjoyed reading them and actually want to study about Napoleon now - and I've never been a big fan of history. http://www.amazon.com/His-Majestys-Dragon-Temeraire-Book/dp/0345481283/ref=pd_sim_b_2
  16. I have some friends who are have been living in a "5th wheel" for about 2 years, because the training the husband was doing with the mlitary meant they would be moving a lot during that time. One thing that they looked for when they bought theirs was "at least one real interior bedroom door". This would be especially important with littles who need to nap. They also got rid of lots of stuff, getting it down to just the essentials. I thought for sure that they would make each other crazy after a few weeks of living in such tight quarters, but they have done very well and made lots of friends at the different campgrounds they have stayed at. Good luck on your new adventure!
  17. Another web site to check out is Apologetics Press http://www.apologeticspress.org They are very similar to AIG and have some good kids resources. Digger Doug is awesome! They teach kids the truth about evolution (that it is not true) on a level they can understand.
  18. Is there a big difference between the 1994 and 2005 editions? If so, what is different?
  19. That is a really good idea. I may have to start that next year.
  20. Dh and the kids are hoping to make a jack-o-lantern tomorrow and we want to cook the pumpkin seeds to eat. What is the best way to do it? Last year they didn't come out so well. Thank you!
  21. Most of my friends use pics of their kids as their profile pic. Oh, wait, I do that too. :D
  22. I was taught to put titles of things like books and movies in quotation marks. Of course, "they" could have changed the rules.....
